SHAVING BRUSH Dec. 11, 1928. 1 ,694,364

UNITED STATES ANDREW ALBRIGHT, 3B, OF MAPLEWOOD, NEW JERSEY.
SHAVHVG BRUSH.
Application filed May 2 3,
This invention relates to shaving brushes. An object of the invention is to provide a cup-like depression in the endsof the bristles constituting the brush, for the purposeof retaining the cream or powder in the center of the brush and to prevent it from falling from the brush, when in use. 1
A further and quite important character istic of the invention resides in the'sectional formation of the brush, the innermost sec tion or core being constructed of relatively stiff bristles, such'as pig bristles, while the outermost surrounding section or'enveloping portion is composed of relatively soft bristles such as soft badger hair, the stifi' bristles constituting the core being adapted to Work in the lather to soften the beard while preventing the latter from being misplaced, while the encircling section made of soft hair, allows for the spreading and smoothing off of the lather.
Numerous other objects of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a reading of the following specification, in conjunction with the drawing attached hereto and forming apart hereof, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the brush.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line- 33 of Fig. 2. r
Referring now specifically to the drawings, 1 designates the handle preferably provided with a cap 2, and a screw-threaded portion 3 having a shoulder 4. 5 is a celluloid ferrule screW-threadedly engaging the handle, and provided with an inturned upper portion 6.
. 7 is a metal band fitting within the confines I concavity at its upper portion 'as shown by reference numeral 9. This construction preof the ferrule. The bristles constituting the brush are preferably embedded in hard rubber as shown at 8. 1
The brush is constructed with a cup-like vents the cream and powder from falling off the brush when first applied, and retains the lather or cream in the central portion of the brush. a
- The brush has a circular horizontal cross section commonly called the knotv and is composed of two sections. One section 1927. Sefia1No.i 93,696. J
known as the core, is located at the middle, as shown b 10. This section is composed of stiff pig ristles-or other stifi' bristles and has formed therein at its upper portion the concavity illustrated by reference numeral 9. The second section of the knot is composed of soft. bristles such as soft badger hair. This section is designated at 11. The core of the knot composed of relatively short and stiff bristles as aforesaid, functions to work the lather in the heard to soften the same while preventing the lather from falling ofi. The stiff character of the central core furthermore prevents the latheror cream from working itself down into the brush where it is inaccessible for contacting with thebeard during the operation of lathering. The soft grade of hair in the casing constituting the encircling section of bristles spreads and smooths off the lather simultaneously with the action of the short stiif bristles oft-he core,
working the lather into the beard. It has been found that the brush constructed as V aforesaid allows the working up of the lather and rubbing into the beard at a minimum time and labor, while at the same time retaining the lather in the center of the cup-like depression formed in the core.
I preferably construct the completed knot I in sucha way that it will measure approximately 2 inches on the extreme outer edge and approximately 2 inches at the exact cen-' ter. The diameter of the core where it meets the handle is approximately 25% inches and at the brushing surface approximately 1% inches.
It will be obvious however, that the rela tive size of the brush and the lengths of the bristles may be varied according to the, type of brush desired to be manufactured, the above dimensions being merely illustrative.
I claim as my invention: I
1. A shaving brush having two sections'of bristles, the middle section constituting the core having a cup-like depression therein to receive and retain lather or other shaving material, and the other section constituting a casing surrounding said core being constructed of bristles of relatively soft charac ter, said brush being characterized by the capability of the stiff bristles constituting into the beard smoothing off of the lather by the relatively soft bristles constituting the casing.
2. A shaving brush comprising a, core composed of stiff pig bristles, lengths and having a concavi of relatively short ty formed in the upper end thereof for receiving and retaining the shaving cream or the like, and an encircling casing composed of soft badger 1Q hair surrounding the pig bristles and the con cavity formed therein.
