Description

J. E. FROST & J. MERRILL.
- SASH-HOLDER.
Patent-ed Nov. 2, 1875.
INVENTOI:
WITNESSES y mnum UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIGE.
JOHN E. FROST AND JOSIAH MERRILL, OF BERWIGK, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,431, dated November 2, 1875; application filed August 14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that We, JOHN E. FROST and JOSIAH MERRILL, of Berwick, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Sash-Fastener, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view. partly in section, of our sash-fastener; and Fig. 2, a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
Our invention relates to a simple and effective sash-fastener, that binds rigidly on the sash, and holds it securely at any height without injuring it in the least; and it consists in a novel combination and arrangement of two rubber-lined heads or rollers at the ends of fulcrumed levers, which are actuated by an intermediate rubber block in therear, and broadened rear ends, serving as handles.
In the drawing, A represents the sash, and B the wooden frame, to which the fulcruined angular levers U are firmly secured, being inclosed by a casing, D. The two fasteningscrews a serve for the purpose of attaching the fastener and to form the fulcruins of the adjustable levers O. The ends of the levers toward the sash are made in roller shape, with rubber lining to bear on the sash and bind thereon, for retaining it by the friction ex erted thereon. The other rear ends of the levers are broadened to form handle parts for the thumb and fingers, for pressing the rear ends together, and, consequently, spread and release the rubber-lined heads. A rubber block, E, of triangular shape, is interposed be tween the rear ends of the levers in the casing, so as to give by its pressure the necessary friction and resistance to the head-pieces for retarding the sash. The casing defines the extent of swinging motion of the levers, and holds the cushioning rubber block in the required position. The fastener is easily operated, and supports the sash in any position when the handles are released, without injur ing the face of the same, as the rubber lining of the heads forms a'protection to the sash. The fastener acts also as an anti-rubber, by its pressure in the sash in every position of the same.
M Having thus described our invention, We
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The angular levers O (J, having rubberlin'ed roller-shaped front ends and broadened rear ends, serving as handles, said levers being fulcrumed in a case, D, and provided at the rear with an intermediate elastic wedge, E, as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN EDWARD FROST. JOSIAH MERRILL.
