Application filed November The present invention relates to loose leaf binders and more particularly vto the type designed for holding` the leaves in overlapping relation so that an edge of one sheet projects beyond an edge of the other in order that the projecting ,ecges may be used as an index. An object of this invention is to provide a novel arrangement of posts or impaling projections upon one of the binding lo members and a transfer member lwhich is incorporated in the binder so that exceptionally short sheets may be employed in the binder while, at the same time, making provision for shifting, through the transfer member, of sheets on the binding member relatively to othersheets. Y i In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 tov 4, 1 and 2 indicate the binding members. Covers 3 are hinged to these binding members at 4 and aback piece 5 hingedly connects the binding members. Projecting from the binding member 1 are a number of posts or impaling projections 6. These posts are arranged in groups of two each except for the end posts, the groups being spaced .apart a greater distance than the distance between the members ofthe groups. fer member may be provided with a number y j of groups of openings 15, the number of such groups corresponding with the number of posts provided with shoulders 7 so that the long posts or impaling projections may pass through said openings in order to pass into theopenings 8 of the binding member 2 for engagement by theloclring member. This transfer member may also be provided with shouldered projections 16 which are adapted to pass into openings 17 of the binding memberQin order to be engaged by the locking member 9.
The leaves 18' of this embodiment are each considerably shorter than the length of the binding members so that they may lie in overlapping relation with the edge of one projection over the edge of the other so that the projecting portions may be utilized as an index for the matter contained on the leaves. Each leaf has a plurality of openings 19 in one margin thereof, these openings being equidistantly spaced. In this embodiment the distance between these spaces is equal to the distance between Athe members of the groups so that when a leaf fits upon a group Vthe members of each group pass through a number of openings without any openings between them. The distance, however, is such that the posts orprojections 14 on the transfer memberI-il may occupy a plurality of positions in openings between .each group on the binding member 1, thus permitting the posts or projections on the transfer member to be'iitted in anyof the openings in the leaf betweenwthe groups on the binding member 1 "for the purpose ofpermitting anyfnumber of leaves tobe shifted to the transfer member and off the posts or projections on the binding member 1, and, thereafter,the transfer member, with such leaves, to be shifted to another position between the groups or posts on the binding member 1 in order that the position of the leaves carried `by the transfer member lUU may be shifted relatively to the leaves carried by the binding member l. The openings l5 in the tran ermember also permit this action. In this en'ibodiment three openings are provided in the transfer memberI and between each group of posts three openings are unoccupied by the posts of the binding member l in the leaves, so that in the norn'ial position of the posts Ywith the shoulders 7 in the central opening of each group l15, the transfer mem-I ber may be shifted between the groups or posts on the binding membei1 l either toward the top or bottom of the binder.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and one of the covers 3a is hinged to the binding member' l?, while the other cover 3" is hinged to the transiter member 13". The binding member 2 connects with the binding' member la by a bach piece 5a hinged to both binding members. In this embodiment, the impaling posts or projections G are also arranged in groupsbutthe number of groups is fewer than that of the embodiment shown in Fig. l, while the distance between the members of the group* is greater. In this instance, five leaf openings are placed between each group of posts on the binding member l and, as only two posts are provided in each grouji) on the transfer member 13, it is possible to shift the transfer member to ay plurality of positions between the posts of the binding member la in order to shift the leaves toward the top or the bottoni of the binding member l@ through the means of the transfer member 13 as before pointed out. At least some of the posts 6a are longer than the others and are provided. with shoulders 7 adapted to pass through openings l5 in the transfer member 4in order to engage in the locking device 9 on the binding member 2a. The transfer member 13gl also has shouldered projections 16 for engagement with the locking device 9 as in the other embodiment. y
In both embodiments of the invention, by arranging the postsor impaling projections in groups which are separated only a short 'll he leaves 18 areylilre the emdi`l 'ance it is possible to hold in the binder leaves which are short in length each leaf will then be engaged by more. than one post. The embodiment hewn in Fig. 5 permits the lmlding of a leaf of much smaller length than the embodiment shown in Fig. l, as the number of posts of this embodiment is nr ch great-er than the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 the distance between the posts is less, and the distance between the group ofposts is less.
