My invention relates to the art'of cutterheads. More particularly my invention re lates to a cutterhead having an improved means for holding the knives on the faces thereof.
A primary object of my invention is to pro- .vide acutter head which will be characterized by the following features: closeness of clamping of the knife to its cutting edge; wide range of adjustability of the knife both in magnitude and direction, i. e., crosswise and lengthwise of the face of the cutter head the non-spreading of the cutterhead under the severe strains to which it is subjected; noninterference of the clamping means with the material being opeifatedupon; adaptation of the cutterhead to the use of thin and thick knives; by the elimination of vibration of the cutting edge continuously thrcughoutits use,
that is, initially as well as after being worn away by long use and grinding; by having the clamping means depressible at right angles to the cutter head face; and byhaving the knife functionas a binder between the parts of the head on each side of the holding aperture in theface which prevents. .diSl ortion of a cutterhead. v
The above general objects of my invention, together withothers inherent in the same, are obtained by the device illustrated in the following drawings, the same being preferred exemplary forms of embodiment of my invention throughout which drawings like reference numerals indicate like parts Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a cuta ter head embodying my invention.

In the longitudinally disposed slot a clamping means 21 is provided under the flanges 22 of which the lateral flanges 23 of each knife 16 may pass. In the periphery of the cutter head a clamping screw hole 2i is provided. 111 this hole a threaded set screw 25 may be inserted having a reduced hearing 26 which may be brought to bear upon the bevelled seat 27 of the clamping means 21.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 6 a T slot 28 may beprovided in the knife 29 and the clam-ping member 30 may be provided with a corresponding T head 31 to fit in said.

In themodified form shown in Fig. 8 a groove 33may be provided in the side of the knife 34 which may be engaged by the flanges 35 of the clamp means 36, the clamping means having a bevelled seat 37. In short, this form represents the opposite of the form'shown in Fig. 6,
- In modified form shown in Fig. 10 the knife 38 may be provided with a base having bevelled side walls 39, engageable by correspending bevelled walls 40 of the clamping means 41, which means has the bevelled seat 42.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 12 a knife 43 may have the dovetailing walls 44 to engage corresponding bevelled walls 45 of the clamping means 46, which means has the bevelled seat 47.
In the modified form shown. in Fig. 14 the knife bearing face 48 is provided with an aperture 49 in the form of a round hole into which the n'iodified form of clamping means 50 in the form of a pin may be inserted. This clamping means may have the T form of head 51 to engage a corresponding T slot opening 52 of knife 53, the clamping means in the form of the pin having the bevelled seat 54 against which may be brought to bear the set screw The face 48 may or may not be provided with a milled surface.
he mode of operation of a device embodying my invention is follows The knife 16 is placed with its milled base upon the milled face 15 slipping the lateral flanges 23 of the knife under the flanges 22 of the clamping means 21. Thereupon, the set screw 25 is inserted in the clamping screw hole 24 and is screwed down hard against the bevelled seat 2"? which causes the knife 16 to be held firmly against the face 15. It will be noted that the longitudinally disposed 'aperture in the form of a slot is located in close proximity to the cutting edge 17 of the knife so that vibration in said, cutting end portion of the knife 16 is eliminated. In thus disposing the aperture longitudinally of the cutter head, it is manifest that the cutter head under each face is divided into two parts, namely, 56 and 57. The part 56 would be distorted by the severe strains to which it is subjected if special provision was not made therefor. Accordingly the knife 16 is caused to function as a binder between parts 56 and 57, i. e. the parts on each side of the slot 20 are firmly held together in an obvious manner by the clamping of the knife member down upon the face, since the milling 18 of the face registers with the milling 19 of the knife.
In eliminating the vibration in the cutting edge, it is manifest that chattering is eliminated and a very smooth surface is provided in the material. being operated upon, also holding the knife edge free of vibration re sults in maintaining the tool in a sharp condition much longer than ordinarily obtains and thus eliminates expense incident to frequent grinding of the knives. that the knife 1'? may be ground away in sharpening and ready adjustment made. by moving'the knife forward on the face, and at all times the distance from the clamping means to the cutting edge is constant. This is in direct contrast with many knives of the prior art, which do not have this constant Also, it is manifest distance between the clamping means and the knife edge, i. e., as the knife edge is ground away the distance ordinarily between the clamping means and the knife edge is reduced and a much restricted life of the knife obtains in the prior art device. It is manifest that the knife 16 embodied in my invention will be characterized by a long period of use fulness as it may be ground practically for a distance of two-thirds or more of its length.
A wide range of adjustability is likewise manifestly present in my invention. The knife may be disposed near the front end of the cutterhead by pushing the same forward or back as desired and the knife may be disposed in a plane transversely of the cutterhead the desired extent by merely sliding the clamping means 21 longitudinally of the cutterhead. Also, it is manifest that the top of the knife is entirely free of any clamping means which will interfere with the work or material being operated upon.
These advantages are obviously inherent in my invention as a result of providing a clamping means which is depressible at right angles to the face in contrast to bolting the knife to the cutterhead, which does notprovide for actuating the clamping means at right angles to the face and in a direction to wards the axis of the cutterhead. It will be noted that the slot 24 has the empty space 58 underneath the clamping means which may be of any desired depth to permit the approaching of the clamping means 21 to the bottom of said slot.
Moreover, it is noted that the cutterhead is adapted to the use of thin or thick knives as the particular requirement may dictate.
In the modified form of clamping means shown in Figs. 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16 it is manifest that the clamping means may be disposed entirely within the knife itself, and thus in no wise interfere with the work.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 16, the form of the aperture 49is round and thereby avoidsweakening the cutter head and maybe preferred for some classes of work to the slot arrangement.
Obviously changes may be made in the forms, dimensions and arrangement of the parts of my invention, without departing from the principle thereof, the above setting forth only a preferred form of embodiment.
I claim- 1. A cutter head embodying a face; an aperture in said face located in close proximity to the forward edge ofsaid face; a clamping means operatively disposed in said aperture having a bevelled seat; a knife; a clamping screw hole in said clamping head beneath the cutting edge of said knife; and a clamping screw operatively disposed in said screw hole to bear against said bevelled seat, whereby said knife may be held securely against said face and operate to hold the parts of said out ter'head on each side of said aperture together.
2. A cutter head embodying a fa ce having interlocking means disposed therein; an aperture in saidface located in close proximity to the forward edge of said face; a clamping means operatively disposed in said aperture having a bevelled seat; a knife having a mounting base provided with means which interlock with the interlocking means on said cutter head; a clamping screw hole in said clamping head beneath the cutting edge of said knife; and a clamping screw operatively disposed in said screw 1016 to bear against said bevelled seat, whereby said knife may be held securely against said face and operate to hold the parts of said cutter head on each side of said aperture together.
3. A cutter head embodying a milled face; a slot disposed longitudinally of thecutter head, said slot being; in close proximity to the forward edge of said face; a clamping means operatively disposed in said slot having a bevelled seat; a knife having a milled mounting base; a clamping screw hole in said clamping head beneath the cutting edge of said knife; and a clamping screw operatively disposed in said screw hole to bear against said bevelled seat whereby said knife may be held securely against said face.
4:. A cutter head embodying a milled face; a slot disposed longitudinally of the cutter head, said slot being in close proximity to the forward edge of said face; a clamping means operatively disposed in said slot having a bevelled seat disposed as respects said face; a knife having a milled mounting base; a clamping screw hole in said clamping head beneath the cutting edge of said knife, said hole being disposed at an angle to the radius of said cutter head; and a clamping screw operatively disposed in said screw hole to bear against said bevelled seat whereby said knife may be held securely against said face.
