My present invention relates to head sets for telephone receivers.
Intheniost usualformof suclrdevic es each receiver is supported by a two pronged fork, the stem of which passes through a slider bracket. The twolslideu brackets are connected to the ends ofone or more spring bands or leather covered wires adapted to rest on the top of the head. In the manufacture of such slider brackets two grooved annular washers are pressed over the two ends of the head wires and a cylindrical sleeve with a central bore is secured internally of the washers. In some cases the cylindrical sleeve of the slider so formed is split longitudinally and has a screw for tightening the portions onto the stem of the two pronged fork. The manufacture and assembly of these parts involves a number of separate manual operations and is relatively expensive.
According to my invention the main body or the whole of the slider is formed in one piece from a length of rod or tubing, preferably by an automatic machine. As thus formed the slider consists of a cylindrical sleeve having a broad flange, preferably at one end, in the periphery of which a deep groove is milled to take the end of the supporting band or bands. The two sides of the groove are then pressed over the wire so as to secure it firmly. o
If desired the sleeve may be split longitudinally and screw threaded at the end away from that occupied by the flange by the automatic machine to take the tapered tightening nut in the usual way. In many cases, however, screw tightening means are not necessary, the bias or resiliency of the head band serving to twist the slider bracket slightly so that it is not quite coaxial with the stem of the fork, whereby the ends of the bore of the slider grip or bind on the said stem. A slider of this latter type is shown in the ac companying drawings to illustrate the invention, the slider being adapted for use with a two pronged fork having a stem of elongated cross section.
The novel features which I believe to be characteristic of my invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. My invention itself, however, both as to its organization and methodof operation will best be understood by reference to the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in whichv Fig. 1 represents a top-plan view of the bracket; Fig. 2, a vertical sectionof the bracket; If" 3'21 bottom plan view of'the same and Fig.4 a perspective. view of' the bracket, mounted on a receiver supporting member and'connected to the endofahead hand..
With reference to the drawings, the slider bracket consists of a hollow cylindrical portion 11, preferably of aluminum, having a bore which is of restricted elongated form at one end, 12, circular over the remainder of its length, as at 13 and 14, and of greater diameter at the other end, 14. A flange 15 formed on the cylindrical portion is provided with a deep annular groove 16, wherein will be accommodated the end or ends of the head band, the sides of the groove 17 being pressed towards each other onto the head band when the slider is being secured thereto. An aluminum closure disc 18 having an elongated hole 19 of similar cross section to that of the bore 12 is placed in the widest portion 14 of the bore and the end of the cylindrical portion is then pressed over, as at 20.
WVhatever be the shape of the cross section of the stem of the receiver supporting memher, the openings 12 and 19 which provide bearings for the stem, should be similar thereto, and just slightly larger, in order that the slider may be moved up or down the stem for y the purpose of adjusting the receivers to the users ears.
' In Fig. 4 the head band wires 21, which are shown partly leather covered at 22, are clamped in the groove 16 of the slider bracket, the peripheries of the sides 17 thereof being pressed together around the head band and meeting at the line 23. The end of the stem of the fork is shown turned off at 24 to prevent the slider from coming off.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a telephone head set, a receiver support including a stem, a slider bracket mounted on said stem, said bracket having a longitudinally extending bore provided with a plurality of restricted portions which conform substantially in shape to the cross section of said stem, an external grooved flange integral with said bracket and substantially at right anglesto saidbore, said flange being adapted to receive a head band Wire.-
2. In a telephone head set, a receiver support including a stem, a slider bracket mounted thereon, said bracket having a central bore provided with a restricted portion which conforms substantially in shape to the cross section of said stem, and an integral grooved flange on said bracket concentric With said bore and adapted to accommodate a head band wire.
3. In a telephone heat set, a receiver support including a stem, a slider bracket mount- *ed thereon, said bracket havlng a pair of longitudinally spaced bearing portions for said stem'and an external integral flange concentrio with one of said bearings and adapted to receive a head band Wire.
41. A device of the class described including a slider bracket provided with a longitudinally extending bore and integral with means arranged to form an external groove concentrio with sald bore, and closure means ranged to form a restricted opening for said arranged to form an external groove concentrio with said bore, and closure means ar ranged to form a restricted opening achacent one end'of said bore.
