The princi al objects of the invention are to simplify t e construction, and reduce the cost of disk sandin mechanisms.

Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of a broken away central portion of the supporting meta-l disk and hub forming part of the rotatory support for the abrasive disk showing the sink or well toreceive the clamping plate.
Fig. 4 is a face view of a pa-rtly broken away abrasive disk adapted for use in the construction shown in F ig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a central cross section of the head taken on the broken line 5-5 in Fig. 1.
Referring to Fgs'. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5,*the disk sanding head includes a supporting disk, 1, mounted upon a hub, 2; and an abrasive disk, 3, mounted 'upon the supporting disk.
The supporting disk, 1, is preferably made of flexible resilient metal, as sheet steel, and i is referably faced with a flexible sheet or bo y, 4, of yielding material such as soft vulcanized rubber, or preferably rubberized fabric similar to that of which rubber belting .is made.
This facing or covering, 4, is preferably secured upon the face of the disk, 1, 'by means of rivets, 5; and if desired it may be of greater or smaller diameter than vthe disk, 1,'as shown.
o he hub, 2, is secured upon the back of the supporting disk, 1, bymeans of rivets, 6, and is'formed with a central sink 'or well, 8, opposite a similarly4 shatlaed opening, 9, formed in the disk, 1, whic sink or well is adapted to receive a clamping plate, 10, .'-n whereby the abrasive disk, 3, is secured to the su porting body formed by the sheet metal isk, 1, and the facing, 4. w
The hub,`2, is also rovided with a central aperture, 11, adapte to receive the end of 5 a shaft, 12; and the clamping plate, 10, is
provided with a central aperture, 13, adapted to receive a screw, 14, whereby the clamping plate is secured to said shaft, 12, causin the disk sanding head to rotate with said s aft.
The abrasive disk, 3, may be made of sand paper, emerymger, emery cloth orthe like of a grade an c aracter adapted for the intended work.
The abrasive disk is preferably cut in the p form shownv in F ig. 4, with a central a ertura, 14, to receive the screw, 4 with our radlal shts, 18, extending outwardly from the central aperture, 14, and with a plurality of apertures, 15, on o posite sides of said central aperture, 14, a apted to receive pins, 16, projecting from the inner side of the clamp plate, 10, which pins are ada ted to enter similarly located openings, 17, in the bottom of the sink or well, 8.
The disk, 3, is thus provided with four floating tongues which converge towa-rd the center of the disk and which are adapted to yleld to the pressure of the clamp late, 10, and be forced into and tightly t within the well, 8, in the hub as the clamp late, 10, is drawn tightly within said we l by means of the screw, 4, with the abrasive disk mounted on the face of the supporting disk, 1, with said floatingtongues inter osed between the clamp plate, 10, and the ttom of the well, 8.
The facing sheet or covering, 4, is formed with a central opening, 7, corresponding in form and size with the well, 8.
In Fig. 3, I have shown the well, 8, rectangular in form with outwardly flaring side walls and the clamp plate, 10, of similar form with its sides, 20, similarly flared outwardly and adapted to fit within the well with the 'the pms, 16, on the clam plate are inserted therethrough and into t e openings, 17, in i the well the slits will extend approximately to the apices of the respective corners or angles of the well,
The tongues formed by the` slits, 18, will thus be bent by the clamp plate, 10, into the well along approximately straight lines extending along the bases of the respective tongues, as shown in Fig. 1.
By constructing and clamping the disk in the manner descnbed, the disks can be supplied to the trade in flat form, and without other pre' aration of the central portion of the disk t an the cutting of the slits, 18, and the apertures, 14, and15.-
The shaft, 12, is rotatively mounted in a housing, 21, and has on its inner end a bev- 'eled gear, 22, in engagement with a beveled gear, 23, on the innei` end of a flexible shaft, 24, which is also rotatively mounted in said housing. v
The housing, 21, has a handle, 25, whereby the operation of the abrasive disk upon' the work can be Controlled.
The operation of the device is as follows: The abrasive disk, 3, having been mounted upon the supporting Sheet metal disk, 1, in the manner abovev described is rapidly rotated by means of the flexible shaft, 25, bev- 'eled gears, 23, and 24, and shaft, 12, while the head is held by the operator with more or less of the abrasive'disk, 3, in engagement.
With the work to be abraded or polished.
By reason of the flexible resilient character of the supporting disk, 1, and flexible, character of the facing,4, the operator can by inclining or tipping the disk and by varying the pressure upon the work cause a zone of What I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is--l 1. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a support including ahub provided in an end face with a depression or well of polygonal form'in a plane transverse to the hub axis, an .initially flat i abrasive disk provided with a central aperture and a serles of slits extending radially from said aperture, one for each angle of the polygon, a clamping plate conforming in Shape to the cross-sectional formof the well in the' hub of the support, and means for connecting said plate and hub, including a member extending through the central aperture in the disk and adapted to draw the plate into said well, the ortions of'the disk separated by said slits b the hub well and clamped between the side walls of the latter and the plate, relative rotation'between the disk and support being positively prevented by the shape of the clamping plate and well.
In an apparatus of the Character described, the combination of a support includz ing a hub provided in an end face with a depression or' well' of rectangular form in a plane transverse to the hub axis, an initially flat flexible disk provided with a central aperture andj four slits extending radial y therefrom, a rectangular clamping plate of an area to extend into the Well in the hub of the support, and means for connecting said plate and hub including a member extending through the central aperture in the disk and adapted to draw the plate into the wall, the slits in the disk corresponding to the diagonals of the well and the portions of the disk separated by said slits being clamped between the side walls of'the well and the plate.
