Description
UNITED STATES PATEN T OFFICE;
A. C. MOORE, OF WILMINGTON, VERMONT.
MODE OF SECURING BITS IN THEIR STOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 16,931, dated March 31, 1857; Reissued December 13, 1870, No. 4,199.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, A. O. MOORE, of Wilmington, in the county of Vindham and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Mode .of Fastening Bits to Bit- Stocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nat-ure of my invention consists in applying a plain socket to any of the known forms of the stock into which the square head of the bit is inserted requiring no fitting except to center the bit. The bit is held in place by a cap which screws firmly upon the shoulders of the head as is shown in the accompanying drawings and model.
A represents the socket end of the stock cut off just back of the first turn; B, the socket; C, segment of a screw; D, head and part of the shank of a bit; E, a slidingscrew-cap; F, an aperture through which the shank of bit D and through which the segment C passes in adjusting the cap to the stock; G segment of a screw out on inside of cap to match segment C on the stock.
The bit and cap being adjusted, a rotary motion is given to the cap, which carries the segment C into the segment G, thereby holding the bit in the socket with a power that defies practical resistance.
I/Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The application to bit-stocks of a plain socket with a screw cap to hold the bit in place by a pressure upon the shoulder of the bit head, thereby doing away with the necessity of fitting a bit before use and gaining the advantage of a sure and rm fastening.
. A. C. MOORE. Witnesses:
S. I). KLUGG,
ASHER HAYNES.
