UNITED STATES 1,693,096 PATE-NT OFFICE.
MAURICE V. SAMUELS, OF SAN FRAN CISCO, CAIIFORNIA.
MECHANICAL RECEIPTACLE.
Application led February 16, 1927. Serial No. 168,655.
My invent-ion` relates to a mechanical re ceptacle adapted to contain cigarettes or other smokers materials suitable for pock'et use and an extinguisher of fire for cigar or cigarette ashes, matches or the like and a compartment to retain such refuse. .y
Other objects will appear from the drawing and specifications which follow:
These objects I attain by employing a casing member and a container member which when telescoped together provide between them a compartment for receiving ashes and the like anda box or case for' carrying cigarettes, cigars, matches, tobacco or the like.
The volume of the said compartment is 1ncreascd by the extended telescopic movement of the members and decreased as they are collapsed and a sideppeninggives access to the said compartment through which the ashes 2o are introduced.
Elastic means normally draw the two members together into lcollapsed position closing the said opening and thereby holding the contained refuse entrapped and excluding air and preventing combustion in the said compartment thus elI'ectua-lly extinguishing any remaining burning material.
In a preferable form of my invention a slide or other suitable form of closure means is employed to discharge the refuse contents from the said container and finger means are provided for manually overcoming the elastic means and extending the telescopic engagement of the members to expose the open- 4 35 ing to the said container sol that/ashes may be An external casing member is shown, by
5o the numeral 1, and an internal case. or container member is shown at 2 adapted to tele'- sco within the casing 1.
u i it? 3 is a slide being one form of a removablebottom adaptedvto normally close the `casing opening" 11 and giving access tothe space betweenthe members to be opened to member l as by t discharge thel contents .as ashes, cigarette butts and the like that have been collected therein. v
At 4 is an opening in the side ofthe casing 60 member 1, through which ashes may be introduced into the compartment between the telescoping members when the member 2 is ext-ended by overcomingthe tension of the spring 13.
At, 5 is a' cover hinged at .14 adapted to normally close the member 2 and forming lerewith a case or box vfor cigarettes or the The spring 13 is fixed to the upper por- 70 tion of the member 2` at 7 and to the lower portion of the member 1 at 15, and provides elastic means tending to draw the members-1 and 2 together and thereby forcev the bot- 'tom 12 towards the slide 3'to. maintain a 75 vminimum volume at all times in the compartment 16, thus securing a minimum amount of air tosuppress combustion therein and eilectually extinguishing and holding re- A tained in the said compartment 16, ashes, cigarette butts or other refuse.
In the side .of the casing 1, I provide a slot 9, 9 through which extends the finger member 8 fixed with the member 2 and enabling the members 1 and 2 to be separated 85 by overcoming the elastic means 13 when the finger forces the member' 8 upwards.
When 1released thespring tension returns the members into collapsed engagement closing the opening 4 andv quenching any refuse 90 contained in the compartment 16.
In the embodiment of my invention here disclosed the spring 13 is completely enclosed in the tube 18 formed with the mem'ber 2 V and a cooperatin he partition 19.
It will now be understood that other forms of my device than that here illustrated and described may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention and I I106) wish to be understood as claiming all such.
- The operation is as follows:
The device is clasped in one hand and with the thumb, the member 8 isf forced upward overcoming .the tension of thev spring 13 un tilthe bottom 12 ofthe member 2 uncoversthe opening 4 in the member 1 when ashesmay be introduced through the opening 4 andr fall into the container 16. The fin er member is now released when the mein rs telei passageway formed in the the said chamber 16 by the members being drawn together bythe spring 13.
Further cigarettes'are available from the box 17 by opening the top 5.
Vhen the chamber 16 is to be emptied the slide 3 is Withdrawn freely discharging the contents from 16.
Reference is herein made to my copending application Ser. No. 139,950 filed October- 6, 1926 wherein is disclosed another species of my invention.
Reference is herein made to my co-pending application Ser. No. 294,646,1i1ed July 28, 1928, wherein is claimed another form of my mechanical receptaclel not claimed herein.
I claim:
1. A case for cigarettes and the like in combination With a casing external tothe case and telescopically engaged therewith, a bottom for said casing, an opening in the' side ot' the casing spaced from said bottom through Which smokers refuse may be introduced and trapped in the space between the case and the easing when the case and the casing are telescopically collapsed, a fin ger member fixed With the case and project-- ing through the casing adapted to displace the case clear o said opening.
2; A mechanical receptacle comprising a A casingand a case forming external and intei-nal members respectively adapted to engage telescopically, elastic means adapted to collapse said members in said telescopic engagement, a`late1'al opening in the side ot the external member adapted to be closed by the said telescopic movement of the other member, one end of said external member provided with movable closure means, a. closed end on the internal member adjacent said means providing a refuse chamber of variable volume during telescopic movement of said members, a movable top for the in ternal member, linger means constructed and adapted to telescopically extend the members by overcomingv said elastic means.
