'This inventionrelates to improvements in indicating attachments for speedometers, and consistsin the novel construction hereinafter disclosed. l
An object of the invention isto provide a device that may be associated with tliefusual speedometer of anv automobile, whereby indication is given to the operator, of predetermined distances travelled by the motor vehicle in order to enable the operator to make the necessary adjustments and supplyof oil, etc., required for the operation of the vehicle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device that is 'connected with the usual speedometer yof a motor vehicle, said device being adapted to display progressively a plurality of panels upon which may be displayed legends of selected character. f
Additional advantages of the invention will be readily apparent from the following detailed description taken in connection with f the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view of anl instrument board of a motor vehicle showing the relationship of the device with the speedometer.
Fig@ is a view partially'in section further l illustrating the manner in which the device is connected with thespeedometer. y
Fig. 3 vis a detail view in vertical section through the speedometer showing the connection between the speedometer mechanism and the shaft of the indicatingr device.
Fig. 4 is a view of the strip upon which y the several legends are displayed.
Fig. 5 is a cross section substantially on the line 5:-5 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing .the speedometer l is shown as mounted in an instrument board 2 of a motor vehicle in the usual manner. Cutting through the instrument board is a window opening in whichis set a rframe 3 provid,- ing an elongated display opening through which the several panelsof the legend strip ofthe device are displayed. The legend strip shown in Fig.4 is divided into a plurality of lpanels 4, the .dimensions of each separate panel corresponding substantially to the area of the opening within the p frame 3. The legend strip may be made of paper, cellu loid, or any suitable material, upon which the legends may be imprinted. The legend strip is carried on the periphery ofa drum 5, the drum, inturn, being carried on a shaft 6 which isj'ournaled in a frame 7 of the speedometer. The inner end of said shaft extends within the frame and the shaft lies adjacent to the numeral wheels. of the speedometer. The shaft 6 is coupled with a selected one of the numeral wheels of the speedometer and, in theembodiment shown, is connected with the one hundred-mile gear 8 by a pinion 9 which meshes with said gear. The drum 5 is attached to the outer end of the shaft 6 in any suitable manner and preferably in releasable association therewith sothat it may be set and coordinated with the speedometer. The legend strip may be secured to the periphery of the drum in any suitable manner, preferably by adhesive material, so that it will have a permanent set relationship with the drum. The entire drum is encased in a cylindrical housing 10 having lan integral inner end wall and a removable cap 11 at its opposite end. The removable cap makes it possible to gainaccess to the end of the shaft 6 and to the drum so that the drum may be adjusted upon the shaft.
Obviously, from the disclosure of the con struction, it will be understood that, when the one hundred-mile. speedometer wheel is actuated through the usual mechanism of the speedometer, the shaft 6 is rotated a single toot-h distance of the pinion 9. The adjustment is suc-h that this rotation of the shaft 6 brings into View in the sight opening the next adjacent panel of the legend sheet.
Itis contemplated that in use the legend sheet shall include certain panels having utility data thereon, such as the distance at which the oil is to be changed, and the intermediate panels shall include advertising data. Thus, for instance, if the device is set to indicate that, at the end of a five hundred-mile run, oil is to be changed, the fifth panel would include the utility data and the intermediate panels would include certain advertisingl data.
At the end of each one hundred-mile run a new display would come into viewin the sight opening, acting as a constant reminder to the loperator of the motor vehicle and, as the Therefore, I do not restrict myself to unessential details of construction, but what .I
claim and desire to secure by Letters VPatent is:-
A device of the character deseribed comprising a iframe, a gear Wheel supported in said frame for intermittent rotation, a shaft extending into Said frame, means for imparting intermittent rotary vmovements to said shaft by said gear Wheel, a drum mounted on the outer end of said shaft for rotation there- 10 by and beingr removable therefrom and replaceable thereon in selected adjustments about the axis of said shaft, a housing enclosing said drum and havingr an integral inner end Wall adjacent to said frame and an open outer end permittingA removal and replacement of said drum upon said shaft, and a removable cap enclosingr the outer end of said housing.
