y CHARLES e. NELSON, or oHrcAeo HEiGHTs, ILLrnos, Assrsnoa 'ro Zonal nnnwrzf METALs COMPANY, or CHICAGO antenas, ILLrnois, n. conrortn'rioiv or .ILLiivos DEVICE FOR SECURTNG PLATE GLASS.
Application filed May 31,
This invention relates to a device for securing plate glass7 with special reference to its use in store front construction.
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for connecting and securing the edges of two adjacent sheets between inner and outer bars which are held in clamping relation to the glass. This means includes draw plates adjustable lengthwise of the bars and secured in the desired position by screws. Each draw plate is formed with a countersunk non-circular seat adapted to receive the correspondingly shouldered head of a screw. After the loose screw is insertedl through the draw plate, the latter is inserted endwise in the front bar into position for the screw to be inserted in a hole in the rear bar. Thus the front bar positively holds the head of the screw against its seat, so that it can neither drop out nor turn when the nut is tightened.
The specific construction of the invention will be more particularly explained with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a rear view of the invention with parts broken away and shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. i
Fig. 3 is a section similar to Fig. 2, showing another adaptation of the invention.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing still another adaptation of the invention.
As .illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the invention comprises a front bar 5 formed of sheet metal and having reversely turned edge portions 6 which are adapted to rest llat against the marginal portions of the glass sheets 7 which are to be secured. A rear bar 8 also formed from sheet metal has inturned marginal portions 9 adapted to rest flat against the rear surface of the glass.
For connecting the two bars7 a number of draw plates 10 are provided which are adapted to fit within the front bar 5 and which are reinforced by corrugations 11 ex tending transversely to the direction of the bar. The reversely turned flanges 6 are substantially parallel to the respective faces of the bar 5 and cooperate therewith to form channels 12 for receiving edges of the draw plates 10.
Each draw plate 10 is formed centrally with a countersunlr non-circular seat 13 adapted to receive the correspondingly 1927. Serial No. 195,212.
shouldered head 11i of a screw 15. After these screws have been inserted in the draw plates the latter are inserted endwise between the flanges 6 and the main portion of the front bar 5 and when they have been moved to the proper position the rear bar 8 is placed in position with the screws 15 eX- tending therethrough and the nuts 16 are then applied to the screws and tightened to draw the two bars into clamping relation to the glass 7. i
It is to be noted that the screws 15 are loose in the draw plat-es 10 but are positively held against falling out as soon as the draw plates are inserted within the ybars 5. The shouldered heads of the screws are thus held in their seats and are prevented from turning when the nuts 16 are tightened to draw the bars 5 and -8 against the glass.
Tn the form shown in Figs. 1 and 27 the invention is used in a. 900 corner bar while in Fig. 3 the invention is .shown as embodied in a division bar for clamping the edges of two sheets which are in the sam-e plane. The various parts shown in Fig. 3 are designated by the same reference numerals which indicate corresponding arts in Fig. 2 but with the exponent a ad ed thereto.
Fig. 4 shows the invention as embodied in a reverse corner bar and the parts shown therein are designated by the same reference numerals which indicate corresponding parts in Fig. 2, but with the addition of the eXponent b.
It will be understood that the various embodiments of the invention herein shown and described are shown merely as examples. The invention may be embodied in other vforms which will readily occur to those skilled in the art. It is my purpose therefore to include all such variations and modications within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In a device of the character described, the combination of a front bar and a rear bar, one of said bars having reversely turned side flanges forming channels with parallel sides, said flanges being adapted to rest flat against one face of the glass while the other bar rests against the opposite face, a draw plate insertible endwise beneath one bar with its marginal portions engageable in said channels, a screw having a shank extending through the draw plate and through the other bar, said draw plate being formed with a countersunk noncircular seat, said screw having a shouldered long as the draw plate remains in the bai', and heat fitting .said seat and normally concealed a nut cooperatingvvith the end of the Shank by the adjacent bar, said adj aoent bar being so to draw the bars into Clamping relation to the 10 formed that normally its inner face is apglass.
5 proximately in Contact with the head of the In testimony whereof I have hereunto screw, locking the same positively against signed my naine to this specification. both rotation and removal from its seat as, CHARLES G. NELSON.
