rIhis invention relates to locking bolts for box-car doors and has for an object to provide a bolt arranged to be slidably carried on a door and adapted to secure the same in locked position and providing a handle pivotally mounted 'for engagement with the bolt whereby to move the same into an open or closed position. One of the principal difficulties in connection with the construction of railway boX car doors, is that the doors are not suit ably braced, and due to the exposure to weather conditions, the same invariably be come warped making it dithcult to close the door to form a tight fit in the door frame. Also, due to the warping action of the door, the same binds in the fra-me and it is necessary in such vcases to employ the use of a large pinchbar in order to force the door open, which results in serious damage to the door and in time, necessitatesa replacement of the the same.
It is accordingly an object of my invention to provide a locking bar for the door which will serve to secure the door in a locked position as well as to operate as a brace for the door so as to strengthen the same and prevent the warping thereof. A, further object is to providea device of this character embodying a car seal for use therewith and adapted to be attached to the operating handle and arranged to prevent the movement of the handle without breaking the seal, which is simple and practical in construction, strong and dui able, efficient and reliable in performance, adapted to be easily and quickly installed in operative position upon the door, and other wise adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction and combination of the various elements forming the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in locked position upon a box car door.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken along a line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a similar view taken along a line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the same comprises a locking bolt for railway box car doors of a type indicated at 5 arranged to slide horizontally with respect to the fram-e 6,

the door locking mechanism comprising a horizontally disposed channel iron 7 slidably supported in a series of brackets 8 secured to the door, one end of the channel iron being adapted to extend in overlapping position with respect to the door jamb 9y and having notches formed in such end for receiving a spring steel rod 10 linedly secured tothe j amb whereby to secure the channel iron against horizontal movement. The spring steel rod l0 is secured at one end with its other end freely disposed so as to permit the rod to be released from the channel iron when desired, and normally retained against horizontal movement with the channel iron by a pair of stop pins 11.
The flanges 12 of the channel iron extend outwardly from the door, the lower flange thereof having regularly spaced notches 13 formed therein whereby to constitute, in effect, a rack bar thereof.

The rack bar formed on the channel iron is adapted to be engaged for the sliding operation thereof by one end of a handle 15, said handle being pivotally mounted intermediate its ends upon a pin 16 carried on a plate 17 secured to the side of the door immediately beneath the channel iron. As more clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing, the opening 18 in the handle for receiving the pin 16 is of an enlarged diameter, the opposite ends of the handle 15 extending outwardly from said openings being angularly disposed, thereby permitting the ends of the handle to be moved toward or away from the door as desired into the opposite positions as shown by the full and dotted lines of Fig. 2, in order to disengage the end of the handle from the rack bar.
A hook 19 is secured to the door j amb 9 and adapted to be engaged by a slotted opening formed in a link 2O pivotally carried by the handle.
The end of the handle l5 opposite from the rack bar engaging end is forked-shaped constituting a handle grip 21 and a latch member 22, the latter having a notched end for engaging a slotted opening formed in a pivotally mounted bar 23 secured to the door. An open ended bracket 241 is also secured to the door adjacent the bar 23 and within which the latch member 22 is adapted to seat, said bracket and said bar being disposed sufficiently near each other to permit the car seal 25 of the usual type to be secured therebetween, and arranged in such a manner as to prevent the movement of the handle in a direction to release the link 2O in order to permit the ldoor to be opened without breaking of such seal.
A pawl 26 is secured to the door immediately above the upper flange 12 of the channel iron and arranged `to engage a notch 27 formed in the said flange and adapted to prevent the sli-ding movement of the channel iron when the door is arranged in. open position.
In the operation of the device, when the door 5 has been closed and the parts arranged in a position as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing, the seal 25 may be attached to the bracket 24 and bar 23 which will prevent the movement of the handle 15 in order to open the door without breaking of said seal. Whenever the door is desired to be opened by an authorized person, the handle 15 is raised slightly upwardly sufficiently to release the bar 23 from the notched end thereof, thereby permitting the release of the handle from the bracket 24 and enabling the link 20 to be disengaged from the hook 19 carried on the door j amb. The spring steel bar 10 is then moved outwardly so as to disengage the notches formed in the channel iron and the upper end of the handle may then be moved into engagement with the notches formed in the rack bar so as to slide the same horizontally, thereby moving the channel iron out of engaged position with the door janib.
It is obvious that the invention is susceptible of various changes in the shape, size and combination of the various parts, without departing from the spirit or scope of the appended claims, and I accordingly claim all such forms of the device to which I am entitled.
I claim v:-
1.v In combination, a slidably mounted door, a ldoor jamb, a channel iron constituting a locking bolt slidably carried by the door and having a rack bar formed along one edge thereof, said jamb having means arranged thereon releasably engaging the bolt, a handle pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on the door and adapted to have one end moved into engagement with the rack bar for slidably operating the same, means carried by the handle releasably engaging the handle with the thereof, a spring actuated rod carried by the c jamb adapted to releasably engage the locking bolt, a handle pivotally mounted on the door having one end engageable with the rack bar for the sliding movement thereof, a hook secured to the jamb, a link carried by the handle releasably engageable with the hook, said handle having its opposite end formed into a latch, a bar pivotally carried on the door releasably engageable with the latch end of the handle, a handle supporting bracket secured to the door, and a car seal adapted to be secured between the bracket and the bar whereby to prevent the movement of the handle without breaking said seal.
