LOCOMOTIVE-CAB SEAT.
This invention relates to a seat designed primarily for use in connection with locomotive cabs, but itis to be understood that a seat in accordance with this invention may be employed in any connection for which it is found applicable, and the invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an adjustable cushioned seat primarily for use by engineers or motormen.
A further object of the invention is to pro! vide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a seat including a. seat member and a cushioned supporting structure therefor and means whereby the seat member can be adjusted to various angular positions with respect to the supporting structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cab seatfor locomotives, in a manner as hereinafter setforth and including means whereby the seat may be raised or lowered to suit theA convenience of the user, thereby reducing fatigue.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a seat which can be moved downwardly, thus providing space for the user to stand should he so desire.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth. a cab seat of substantial construction which may be easily and conveniently adjusted for height.
Fnrther objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an adjustable cushioned seat, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efficient in its use, conveniently adjusted, readily installed and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is 'to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can beresorted to which will fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the vdrawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation of an adjustable, cushioned seat in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary view, in section, of cushioned supporting element.
Referring to the drawings the seat includes a supporting standard consisting of a head portion and a shank portion referred to generally at 1, 2 respectively and with the standard substantially of T-shape contour. The head comprises a hollow rectangular apertured body portion 3 having its rear wall, at its top, extended to provide a vertically disposed flange 4 provided with openings '5 for the passage of holdfast devices to secure the top of the body portion stationary. The flange 4 extends from one end to the other end of the body port-ion 3. The body portion 3 at each end thereof is formed with an outwardly directed flange 6. The flanges 6 extend lengthwise and the fla-nge 4 horizontally or transversely of t-he body portion rThe flanges 6 extend from the top to the bot-tom of t-he body port-ion 3 and each of which is of greater width than the ange 4. Each flange Y the same contour as said body portion 8 and the seid flanges 10 merge into the rear of the bottom of the body portion 3 of the head 1.
Each flange .l0 is formed with an opening 11 for 'the passage of a holdfast device to ixedly secure the stem or shank and the lower art of the head 1 stationary.
rlhe front of the body portion 8 of the stem or shank .2 has formed integral therewith a series of upwardly inclined, superposed, outwardly extending lugs 12 which overhang each other and each of which is provided with an upwardly extending inclined socket 13 for a purpose to be presently referred to.
A seat member is indicated at 14 and which is adjustably and pivotally connected to the flanges 6 and supported in adjusted position from the stem or shank 2 by a cushioned supporting means therefor. Secured to the lower face of the seat member 14 is a pair of spaced straps 15 which project from the inner or rear end of the seat member 14, The projecting parts of the straps are bent to provide loops 1G for the passage of a combined supporting and pivot bar 17.
Secured to the lower tace ot the seat member 111, between the straps 15, is an eye 13 and which is provided for coupling a cushioned supporting means to the seat member 11i and said means will be presently referred to.
The bar 17 comprises a cylindrical inter mediate part 19, a curved and shouldered part 20, and a pointed end part 21. The i mediate part- 19 in proximity to the end part 21 is 'formed' with a peripheral groove 22 which provides a pair oi"4 shoul ers. rl'ho bar 17 is ot cylindrical cross secti.,n and is ot a` diameter son'iewhat less than the diameter off either oit the openings 7. The bar 17 is i tended through one ot the openings 7 o'1 row, and also through the loops 1-(3, une when in position overlaps both of the flanges 6, see Figure 2. The bar 17 not only provides a pivotal connection between the seat member 14 and the head 1, but further acts as a support for the inner end oit the seat member 1i.
The cushioned supporting` means i'or the seat member 1st comprises a tubular section 23, a cylindrical section 24 telescoping within the section 23, an apertured head piece 25 which is connected to the eye 18 and carried on the upp'erend of the tubular section 23, a tootpiece 26 connected to the lower end et the cylindrical section 24, ci greater diameter than the 'diameter ot the latter to term a shoulder 27 and with the i'oot piece formed with an extension 28 ot less diameter Jr'or engaging in a socket 13, a stop 29 secured and extendii'ig transversely of the tubular section 23, a collar 30 slidably mounted on the tubular section 23 andadapted to abut the stop meinber 29, a collar 31 positioned against the shoulder 27 and a coiled spring- 32 surrounding the tubular section 23 and interposed between the collars 30, 31. The stop member projects from the tubular section 23 and its projecting ends are in the path oi the collar 30. The stop member' 29 further extends through a longitudinally extending slot :toi-med in the cylindrical section 24.
The rows oit openings 7 permit ot positioning the seat member 1-1 at 'different heights with respect to the supporting standard. vThe sockets 13, in connection with the cushioned supporting means permit ol' positioning the seat-member 1li at different angles with respect Vto the supporting standard. The cushioned supporting means detachably engages in the sockets 13 so that it can be removed there'lrom and the seat member dropped if 'desired As the supportin means is oi the telescopic type and includes a controllingspring for the sections 23, 211 it provides io'r vthe cushioning of the seat member 14 when the latter is supported in adjusted v position by said nieans,in connection `with Vthe stem o'i' shank 2 and bar 17,. The shouldered parts ot bar 17 will provide for the re-` taining oit' the latter in selected position with respect to the flanges 6.
It is thought thc many advantages ot an adjustable, cushioned scat in accordance with this invention, can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details ci construction can be had which will lall within the scope of the invention as claimed:

A seat for t-he purpose set forth comprising a stationary standard including a head portion and a shank portion and with the latter of less width than the former, said head portion formed with a pair of spaced anges at the sides thereof, each of said flanges provided with a series of spaced openings, a seat member, a combined seat member supporting and pivot bar selectively extending` through the openings of said flanges for adj ustably, detachably and pivotally connecting said member to said head portion, said bar having inherent means coacting with the flanges for detachably securing the bar in set position, and a cushioned supporting means for the seat member, said stem portion and means having coacting elements for selectively positioning said means at varying inclinations with respect to the standard, said coacting elements detachably securing said means in position to support the seat member.

A seat for the purpose set forth comprising a stationary standard provided at its top with opposed apertured flanges, a seat member, a combined seat member supporting and pivot bar selectively extending through the apertures'of said flanges for adjustably, detachably and pivotally connecting said member to the standard, and a telescopic cushioned supporting means for said seat member including a spring controlled shiftable section, said means connected to said seat member, said shiftable section having its lower end provided with means to selectively engage in the lower portion of the standard at different points to support said means at varying inclinations with respect to the standard.
7 A seat for the purpose set forth comprising a stationary standard having an enlarged upper portion and a reduced lower portion disposed centrally with respect to the upper portion, vertically extending, opposed, spaced flanges projecting from the sides of said upper portion and each having a row of superposed spaced openings, the openings of one row aligning with the openings of the other row, means extended from said lower portion to provide a vertical row of spaced upwardly inclined sockets, a pivot bar for selective extension through opposed openings, a seat member pivotally attached to the bar, and a cushioned supporting means pivoted to said member and selectively engaging in said sockets for supporting said member with rcspect to the standard.
8. A seat for the purpose set forth comprising astationary standard having` an enlarged upper portion and a reduced lower portion disposed centrally with respect to the upper portion, vertically extending, opposed, spaced flanges projecting rearwardly from the sides of said upper portion and each having a row of superposed spaced openings, the openings of one row aligning with the openings of the other row, means extended rearwardly from said lower portion to provide a vertical row of spaced, upwardly inclined sockets, a pivot bar for selective extension through opposed openings, a seat member having projecting from its forward end means for pivotally connecting it to said bar, and a telescopic cushioned supporting element pivotally attached at its upper end to said member and having a reduced lower end selectively engaging with one of said sockets for support-ing the seat member relative to said standard.
