An additional important advantage of the described appliance is that it operates efliciently to absorb any 'violent lateral stresses which may be encountered in service.
The invention claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is z 1. In a locomotive of the outside bearing type, the combination of a plurality of pairs of driving wheels; an axle for each pair of wheels, having journals disposed outside of the Wheels; a frame, comprising two side frame members supported by the journals; pedestals in said side frame members; driving boxes mounted on the journals and iitted in the pedestals, with the capacity of a limited lateral movement; a lever, fulcrumed at the outerside of each side frame member, and having a lower leg disposed below the fulcrum, adapted to bear on an adjacent driving box, and an upper leg disposed above the fulcrum; and means, associated with the upper legs of a pair of levers, disposed on opposite sides of the frame,lsaid means being adapted to store sulicient power when one of the levers is tilted b an outward lateral movement of a driving ox, to cause the tilted lever to restore the outwardly moved driving box to normal position, when the force causing such voutward lateral movement is removed.
2. In a locomotive of the outside bearing type, the combinationl of a plurality of pairs of driving wheels; an axle for each pair of wheels, having journals disposed outside of the wheels; a frame comprising two side frame members supported by the journals; pedestals, in said side frame members driving boxes, mountedon the journals, and fitted in the pedestals, with the capability of a limited lateral movement; a lever,- fulcrumed at the outerside of each side frame member, and having a lower leg, disposed below the fulcrum, adapted to bear on the adjacent side frame and the adjacent driving box, and an upper leg, disposed above the fulcrum; and means, associated with the upper legs of a pair of levers` disposed on opposite sides of the frame, said means embodying a helical spring, and being adapted to store suficient power in said spring, when one of the levers is tilted by an outward lateral movement of a driving box, to cause the tilted lever to restore the outwardly moved driving box to normal position, when the force causing such outward lateral movement is removed.
In a locomotive of the out-side bearing type, the combination of a plurality of pairs of driving wheels; an axle for each pair of wheels, having journals disposed outside of the wheels; a frame comprising two side frame members, supported by the'journals; pedestals, in said side frame members; driving boxes mounted on the journals, and fitted in the pedestals, with the capability of a limited lateral movement; and means, exerting a yielding resistance, adapted to hold the driving boxes in normal central position,r relatively to the side frame members, when the locomotive is traversing tangent track and to permit a limited lateral movement of the driving boxes, when the locomotive is traversing curved track, said means comprising a pair of levers, one fulcrumed at the outer side of each of the side frame members, each lever having a lower leg, disposed belowthe fulcrum, adapted to bear on the adjacent side frame member, and on an adjacent driving box, and an upper leg, disposed above the fulcrum; a rod, disposed transversely of the frame; a pair of spring seats at one end of the rod, one of the spring seats being normally held in lixed position on the rod, andthe other spring seat being freely slidable therealong, one of the spring seats being adapted to bear on the upper leg of one of the levers; means for adjusting the position of at least one of the spring seatswith relation to the other; and a helical spring interposed between the seats and normally held under compression thereby.

In a locomotivey ofthe outside bearing type, the combination of a plurality of pairs of driving wheels; an axle for each pair of wheels, having journals disposed outside of the wheels; a. frame, comprising two side frame members supported by the journals; pedestals in said side frame members; driving boxes, mounted on the journals, and fitted in the pedestals, with the capability of a limited lateral movement; and means, exerting a yielding resistance, adapted to hold the driving boxes -in normal central position, relatively to the side frame members, when the locomotive is traversing tangent track, and to permit a limited lateral movement of the driving boxes, when the locomotive is traversing curved track, said means comprising a pair of levers, one fulcrumed at the outer side of each ofthe side frame members,
