This invention relatesto casings for typewriting machines, with reference to that class in which a casing is provided with ak cover, and pertains more particularly to a latch for normally retaining the casing-cover in closed position. n
. It is desirable to adapt'the casing touse with the machine on the usual folding or collapsible desk-board. Heretofore, the casings have been provided with covers, hinged theretol at the rear, and have been provided withk springs for assisting in the opening of the cover; the cover being held down against ,thev action of suchsprings byy gravity. As the casing is tilted with thevmachine, inthe operation of folding the same into the desk, on arriving ata certain position, gravity may cease to be effective to hold the cover. in place, andthe latter, urgedA by its springs, ory by gravity, may swing open. ,'An object of theA present inventionisthe provision of means for lockingthe cover to thevcasing-body, which means may be rendered ineffective or Vidle duringthe operation ofthe machine, so that the cover maybe opened at will, and which may bereadily, and

In'the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view, in side elevation, ofthe assembled machine and casing, the latch being disclosed in two positions.
lFigure 2 is a cross-sectional view, in side elevation, through the top of the casing, to illustrate the manner of latching the cover.
The casing is shown as consisting mainly of two castings, one of which10 constitutes the body of the easing, and the other of which 11 constitutes a cover hinged at 12 to the bodyportion. As indicated at 13, the body-portion is lined with a sound-deadening material, such, for instance, as felt; and, as indicated at 14:, the cover is similarly lined. The bodyportion of the casing is shown as having a floor or bottom15,secured to the casting of the casing-body in any suitable manner; and the casing, as a whole, rests upon a platform Serial Nov 49,973.

The main frame 17 of the typewriting machine, indicated in dotted lines in Figure'l, is supported by front and rear feet 18 and l19; The keyboard-extension 2() of the typewriting machine proj ects through a suitable opening rin the front wall ofthe casing, and suitable sound-deadening-'linings (not shown) are provided atthe front of thecasing.' The typewriting machine is shown as anchored `by boltsv 21 in much the usual way to the Iplatform 16. `rlhe platform 16 and felt bottom ofthe casings areperforated for loose passage y therethrough ofthe bolts 21; and, to prevent emission of sound through the bolt-openings, washers 22, offelt-or vother sound-proof material, are inserted under the heads 23-ofthev bolts. The 'bolts 21 threadv into the usual lugs 241011 the frame 17 of the typewriter. lIn-the present instance, thevv casing, not being liftable independently of the typewriting machine, is therefore indirectly held to the platform 16 by the bolts 21.- n i For assisting in the opening of the casingvcover, there is provided, at each side -of'the casing, a spring (not'shown) concealed within a. lcylinder 25, which spring bears atone end againstone end'of its cylinder, and'at its other end against a piston on a rod 26. The rod 26 is secured at 27 to the casing-cover; and the cylinder, in which it slides, is secured at 28 to the casing-body- Brackets `29 and 30 attached, respectively, to the cover and the casing-body, serve as anchors for the rods 26 and cylinders 25, respectively. Metal strips 31, 32, laid against the inside of the edges of the linings 13 and .14, respectively, and running longitudinally of such liningedges, arev secured tothe body and coverl castings by screws 33, and thus serve to hold the linings at their edges.
Normally, gravity suffices to hold the cover closed; in which position (see Figure 2) the lining-strips 111 at the sides of the cover rest upon the casting 10 of the body-part. Ribs 35, formed in the side or end walls of the covercasting, serve as reinforcements therefor, and
lllf) the cover to the casing-body, a. lock or detent is provided. lThis lock or detent consists of a spring-arm 37, pivoted at 38 to the casingcover, vto have movement thereon to the t'ull and dotted line positions of Figure l. The distal end ot the spring-arm 3 7 carries a bolt or lock-pin 39. Normally, that is to say, when the machine is in position tor operation, and when it may be desired to open the cover, for any purpose, the arm 8'? is in the full line or Figure l position. In this position, it is sprung or lbent out, Withthe pin or bolt E39 centered and resting in idle position in a retO, located inthe cover end Wall. Before the machine and casing are folded back into the desk, however, the arm 37 is swung to the dotted line, Figure l, position, at which time, the bolt 39 is brought into registration with a hole Lll, which passes entirely'through the end Wall ot the cover, and which hole del is in registration with a hole Ll2 in the end Wall oi' the casing-body. Y At this time, the spring-action of the arm 37 causes the bolt 39 to enter the holes 4:1 and 4t2, thereby lockingthe cover against movement on its hinge l2.
Variations may be resorted to Within the scope ol the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used Without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l'. The combination with a casing having a cover hinged thereto, of a flexible and shittable arm pivoted to one side of said cover and provided With a projection thereon generally parallel to said pivot, there being corresponding apertures in the side ot' said cover and said casing registering with each other in closed position of the cover and normally retained in registration by said arm-projection passing therethrough, said arm being conditioned to be `first Withdrawn by tlexure thereof to Withdraw said projection trom said apertures, and thereafter shittable about said pivot to shift and thereby displace said projection from said apertures to an idle position.
2. The combination with a casing having a cover hinged thereto, ot a iiexible and shittable arm piv Kted to one side of said cover and provided with a projection thereon generally parallel to said pivot, there being corresponding apertures in the side of said cover fand said casing registering with each other in closed position oft' the cover and normally retained in registration by said arm-projection passing therethrough, said arm being conditioned to be lirst withdrawn by lexure thereoit' to Withdraw said projection from said apertures, and thereafter shiftable about `said pivot to rest said projection against the side o said cover in. idle position.
3. r`iihe combination with a casing having a cover hinged thereto, ot a flexible and shittable arm pivoted to one side of'said cover and provided With a projection thereon generally parallel to said pivot, there bei-ng corresponding apertures in the side of said cover and said casing registering With each other in closed position ot the cover, andalso a recess in the side or" said cover equidistafnt with said coveraperture from said pivot, said cover-aperture and the aperture in said casing being normally retained in registration by said armproj'ection passing therethrouglnisaid arm being conditioned to be first Withdrawn by flexure thereof to Withdraw said projection lfrom said apertures, and thereafter shiftable about said pivot to displace said projection from said apertures to rest in said recess onl said cover in idle position.
