Description

Nov. 20, 1928.
H. H. JONES PACKAGE FOR CIGARS, CANDY, AND THE LIKE Filed March 192" [NIYLVTOR fiaro/o i7. ones .4 TIP/HEM Patented Nov. 2o, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. v
I HAROLD H. JONES, 0F KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TOKALAMAZOO VEGETABLE PARCHMENT COMPANY, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
PACKAGE FOR CIGAR S, CANDY, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed March 7, 1927.:'Se r1a1 No. 173,564.
The main objects of thisinvention are:
First, to provide an improved package for cigars, candy and the like which effectively protects the article enclosed, perm ts the 1nspection thereof and afiords ready accessn bility.
Second, to provide an improved packa e for cigars and the like which permits t e wrapping and sealing of the package with the cigars enclosed therein in a wrapping machine without likelihood of injuring the contents.
Third, to provide an improved package of the class described b means of which the contents are preserve with the moisture therein as for cigars, or with the moisture excluded as is desirable in certain confections.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embod ing the leatures of my invention is clearly i lustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which;
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a cigar packageembodying the features of my invention. 1
Fig. 2 is a cross section, a cigar being shown conventionally.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the open sided box-like frame.
Fig. 4. is a perspective view with the package open for removal of its contents.
My improved package comprises a box-like frame consisting of opposed side walls 1 and 2 and opposed end walls 3 and 4. These are formed of a strip of paper of suitable width scored to facilitate folding, the. wall 4 havinga flap 5 which is disposed within and glued to the wall 2. The wall 2 has an opening 6 extending from the end wall 3, this 0 ening 6 weakening the wall sufliciently at t e corner 7 as to insure breaking or fracturing at that point when the opening 6 is engaged as by the thumb nail. Slits 8 are preferably provided to facilitate breaking at this point. However, sufficient stock is left to prevent breaking of the frame in handling.
The wrapper 9 is wrapped around the frame after the contents, such as a cigar indicated at 10, are inserted, the ends of the wrapper being folded at 11 and sealed. The wrapper is preferably formed of waxed with paper, that is, paper that has been treated paraffin wax, which renders it transparent and also moisture resisting.
Theoverlapping flaps of the package are heated which causes the paraflin to melt sufficiently to seal the flaps. The contents are thus completely enclosed but may be inspected through the open panels of the frame, the a wrapper constituting side panels for the frame. 3
When it is desired to open the package the wrapper may be readily fractured over the opening 6, the opening engaged with the thumb-nail, the frame fractured and the wrapper torn open as indicated in Fig. 4. The pull on the frame fractures it at its weakcncd point and the paper is torn alon the slde of the frame as it is lifted up as s own in Fig. 4.
My improved package is especially well adapted for cigars as they are kept fresh and moist for a considerable period of time or protected from dust either in the pocket or ontlie counter. Further, the wrappers may be applied by wrapping and sealing machines which is of verygreat advantage, and this is effected without injury to the contents.
- I have illustrated and described my package as I have embodied it for cigars although it is well adapted for confectionery and other articles where it is desired to protect the same and at the same time provide apackage which mag be readily opened.
avingthus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A package comprising an open sided frame member having an opening in one of its side walls extending from the adjacent end wall, and an enclosing wrapper of transparent material having sealed closing fla s disposed at the ends of the frame whereby t e contents of the receptacle are completely closed in a sealed package and are visible through the open sides of the frame, said wrapper overlying said opening in said frame, said opening facilitating the fracturing of the wrapper over said opening and permltting engagement of the end of the frame through said opening and the fracturing of the frame at the corner adjacent said opening and the tearing of the wrapper'along the edges of the frame as it is pulled apart exposing the contents of the package.
2. A package comprising an open sided ing and a fracturing point, and an enolosin wrapper com letely enclosin said frame an overlying sai nail opening t erein,- said nail opemng facilitating the fracturing of the wrapper over the opening and the engagement of the frame through the fractured wrapper, and the fracturing thereof at a pre-- determined point and the tearing of the wrapger along the edges of the frameas it is pulle apart exposing the contents of the package.
