course become wedged in the opening and in order to facilitate the removal thereof I have provided my improved means. In my present invention I use the usual clamping aws of a drill steel forging machine in combination with a pivotal member adapted to .grip the pin to move thesame outwardly from the hollow portion of the steel when the collar or lug on the steel engages a fixed abutment.
In the accompanying drawings have shown for purposes of illustration one form which my inventionmay assume in practice. In the illustrative form of my invention as disclosed in this application, which is a division of my copending application, SerialNo. 400,121, filed July 30, 1920, I have shown the same as incorporated in a well known type of forging machine comprising a base I having an anvil2 and a pneumatic swaging m0- tor 3 adapted to cooperatetherewith. Disposed to the rear of said swaging motor are therelatively movable vise jaw-s herein shown as comprising a stationary jaw 4 and a ver-- tically movable jaw 5 actuatedthrough rods 6 by any suitable power means. Usual attachments are mounted upon the vise jaws such as the gaging dies 7, clamping dies 8 adapted to cooperate With a suitable upsetting motor, and a pneumatically operated hole forming mechanism 9. 7
The attachment to the vise jaw to which this invention particularly has reference is for the removal of a hole forming tool after said tool is driven into the steel by the mechanism 9. This improved pin or tool remover is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 as comprising an opening- 10 formed in the movable jaw while disposed therein is a suitable pin engaging device 11. This device is pivoted, as at 12, to the :movable jaw and has a stop shoulder 13 adaptedtoengage the transverse surface of the opening 10 against which it is held by a suitable spring pressed pin 14 projecting downwardly from an opening 15 formed in said aw. It is tobe noted that the -p1n seats within a recess 16 formed in the upper surface of the member 11. A downwardly projecting portion 17 has a bifurcated portion 18 forming a sharp pin engaghole of the steel which will have either lugs 22 ora suitable collar thereon adapted to abut the front edge of the stationary jaw 41. The
pin will be inserted by suitable manipulation of the steel within the bifurcation18. The upper jaw will then be moved downwardly, whereupon the claw 19 will engage the pin and upon continuous downward movement of said jaw will tend either to bite into'the pin or tightly gripthe same, whereupon the pin will be forced outwardly by means of a toggle action due to pivotal movement of the member 11 about its axis 12. Obviously the rounded surface 20 will prevent the claw 19 from biting into the pin too far and will also assist in causing the member 11 to swing about its pivot. I
WVhile I have in this application specific ally described one form which iiiyinvention may assume in practice, it is to be understood that this form of the sameis shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Mechanism for removing a pin from a hollow drill steel comprising a movable mem her, a gripping means pivotally supported and actuated thereby for engaging one of the elements to be separated, and means for guiding thesaid movable member to move in a direction transversely of the longitudinal axis of the member being gripped.
2, Mechanismi'or removing a pin from a hollow drill steel comprising relatively movable members,'m'eans for engaging a pin to cause removal thereof comprising a member pivoted to one of said relatively movable members and having a pin gripping arm, the pivotal point of said member being offset from the point at which said pin is engaged.
3, A mechanism for removing apin from a hollow drill steel coriiprisingmeans forengaging one of said elements, and a member presenting a surface opposed to said engaging means, the latter being movable in one direction until said engagement, and'then upon engagement automatically having different movement to cause removal of said pin.
4. In a forging machine, a pin'extractbr comprising a member reciprocable at an an gle to the pin, a claw pivotedito said recipro cable member, the free end of said claw being adapted to engage a pin, said claw being adapted to change its angle with respect to the pin which it engages upon reciprocation of said reciprocable member.
5. In a forging machine, a pin extractor comprising a. reciprocable member, a member pivoted adjacentone end to saidfirst mentioned member and adapted to engagea pin with its free end, movement of said reciprocableumember being adapted to decrease the angle between said pivoted member and the pin. I
6; In a forging machine, a reciprocable member, a member pivoted thereon between its extremities upon a pivot transverse to the direction of movement of said reciprocable member, means, for holding said pivoted member in a predetermined normal position relative to said reciprocable memb'erconr prising a spring exerting pressure on said pivoted member to one sidevof its pivot to cause engagement between said pivoted memher and said reciprocablepn'iember on the opposite side of said pivot, said pivoted member having a pin gripping m'eans arranged at its forward end and being adapted to grip a pin andcause longitudinal movement thereof bymeans of a toggleaction about its pivot.
