JULES J'. BRELL, OF NEW YORK, N.
scoUnINe DEVICE.
Application led January 15, 1927. Serial No. 161,277..v
This invention relates to a device used for scouring pots, pans, dishes, bottles or other household utensils and has for its object to providean abrasive material and improved holder for the same,'permitting such abrasive inaterial to be both economically held and used.
A further object of this invention is to provide an -improved holder for an abrasive polishing material, whereby such materia-l can be maintained in' a convenient and uniform shape despite hard use and will be so held that it cannot cut or mairthe fingers while being used for polishing or other purposes.`
With these objects and such' other objects as may hereinafter appearin view, I have .devised the particular arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part h'ereof in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of m 1mproved scouring or polish-ing device, wit parts being broken away -to disclose construction;
Figure 2 .is a vertical sectional vlew of a part of the same;
' Figure 3 is a side elevation, partly in sec-l tion of a modified form of device y Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-#4 of Figure 3, looking in the directlon of the arrows;
Figure 5 isa side elevation partly 1n sectlon of a further modification; and
Figure 6 is a side elevation of a still further modification. Throughout the various views of the draw- 4 ings, similar reierencecharacters designate similar parts. t
In 4the embodimentof my invention disclosed in Figure 1, 1 indicates the outer covering 'or casing of the device. This casing'or .covering-1s made of any suitable resillent material andv 1s preferably waterproof or water-repellent, so that it will maintain lits shape while being used in water. The covering'l may thus be made of rubber, wateryproof fabric, very thin metal or the like.
It is, as was heretofore stated, preferably made resilient, althoughitshould possess sufficient rigidityror stitnessto maintain Aits shape during use and prevent its contents, consisting of an 'abrasive' 2 from becoming mlsshapenl or distorted. The abrasive substance 2`may be of any suitable material and vpreferably consists'of steel wool which is tightly compactedinto the casing or cover lso that the inherent resiliency of this wool 2 combined with the resiliency of the covering 1 causes the material 2 to be maintained in position within the covering. It is also desirable to secure such material further in place by the use of a lwater-proofadhesive indicated at 3,`with which the inner face of the covering 1 may be coated.
At 4 is shown a stiiening member or block which is insertedfinto one of the ends of the casing or cover 1, this block tending to maintain the casing in a substantially cylindrical form and also to add a desirable stiness to the construction.l The casing or cover 1 is provided with a plurality of circumferential grooves 5, which are spaced apart at desired distances and which naturally provide weakened parts on the casing or lines .upon which es ,l
parts of the casing may be torn away to expose partsof the abrasive material 2.
Located between the grooves 5 are thickened areas 6 and these areas 6 are provided with cut away' portions 7 at which are located triangular shaped apertures 8.
It will be seen from Figures 1 and 2 that on one side of the covering, th/ese apertures 8 are located in alternating ribs Gand on the opposite side such apertures are located in those ribs which are skipped on the first mentioned side. This construction tends to avoid'the provision of a single continuous longitudinal weakened line.
From the foregoing, the manner in which the device is used will be readily understood. When the device is sold, it may bein the form disclosed in Figure 1, whereby a small amount of the abrasive or steel vwool 2 projects below the end 4of the covering 1. The device may be then held in the hand and used for scouring or polishing purposes until yther exposed part of the abrasive 2qis used o r be- -come worn down iiush with the end of the covering. Thereupon, the end of a fork or other pointed household implement may be inserted in thev lowermost opening 8 and a part of the covering torn off on the lowest weakened line or groove 5, so that part ofthe abrasive will beexposed This may be continued as long as there is any abrasivev material in the holder, it being merely necessary lto tear ofi o r remove successive rings on the covering` to expose portions of the abrasive material..
It will also be noted that the construction of the cover or casing 1 just mentioned is such that, it provides a roughened exterior surface so that it does not become slippery or ioo Ilos
dicult to hold in soapy Water. is this cas-v ing or cover 1 securely grips the abrasive, it does not permit the abrasive to become solidie'd or compacted and rendered unt for use nor does it expose to the hands a greater part of the Wool than is necessary for actual use. ln the construction disclosed in Figures 3 and the covering disclosed at 9 may be of any suitable materiai, such as a Waterproof fabric, rubber or'the like and inthis modiication of my invention, said covering is et tubular torni and consists or a section ot materai tightly Wrapped around the abrasive material 2 and a. longitudinally extending edge 10 of the covering is provided with a plurality ot spaced inwardly extending slits 11, providing tabs 12 Which may be successively grasped to tear ottl a part of the covering and expose portions of the abrasive 2 as may be required. ln the modiiication of my inventiondisclosed in` Figure 5, the covering 13 there shown preferably of rubber is provided With a plurality of diagonally extending serrations or threads 1li and this threaded part is provided with punched-out tabs 15 which can be successively grasped so that parts ot the covering may be torn or threaded olf to expose. successive parts of the contained abrasive or Wool 2. lt will be noted that the threads are left hand threads, so that portions ot this covering ltearo When sucfatt cessive tabs 15 are pulled. llt will be seen that the tabs 15 are spaced apart so that there is located intermediate of each pair of tabs, an interveningrib. The casing is thus arranged in order that when each section is torn away, the then remaining lower end of the casing Will be in the nature of a continuous rib, preventing inadvertent tearing of the casing -While the device is being. used for scouring.'
In the modication of my invention disclosed in Figure 6, the covering' is'fornied from a single,` continuous, spirally Wound strip 17vvhich is provided with transverselyextending weakened lines 18, so that to expose parts ot the Wool or abrasive, part 'of the covering 17 is univound and severed or torn oit at any of the weakened lines 18. '1n this con-l struction, the overlapping parts ot the strip 17 may be adhesively joined to maintain the spirally Wound covering in (position, yet the adhesive is such that it does not possess too great a tenacity to prevent the strip trom being manually unvvound and torn away when,v desired.
From-the foregoing, it Will be obvious that my device may be embodied in many forms, without departing from the Spirit oit this invention. Any orm oit covering used for holding the abrasive should be or" sufficient rigidityV to hold the abrasive in proper shape and to permit its being in the form ot astick, it Will be seen that the unused part ot theabrasive is always covered and kept clean and ready for" use and that the hands of the user are constantly protected by the coveringvvhile the article is being used.
Having described my invention, what l claim is.:
1. Anarticle ot the class described comprising a holder for a metallic wool abrasive, said holder being composed ot a tubular casing provided With -spiral exterior ribs, sai-d casing being provided With a plurality of struck out tabs produced by the severance of some of said ribs.
Y 2. An article of the class described com- Jprising aholder for a metallic Wool abrasive consisting of a tubular section of exterior-ly ribbed rubber, the ribs being severed at spaced points providing pulling tabs for successively tearing awa sections of said casing.
8. An article ott e class described coniprising a substantially cylindrical body ot metallic Wool abrasive, a container therefor consisting of a ribbed tubular section of resilient impervious material, said container surrounding the body of Wool and`maintaining it in its substantially cylindrical shape, an-d weakened at spaced points on the ribs ot said container whereby parts of the container may be successively torn away.
4. An article of the class described comprising a holder containing metallic wool abrasive, said holder being composed of a rubber tubular casing adapted to be removed in sections to expose successive portions of its contents.
5. An article of the class described, comprising -a tubular casing of flexible Waterrepellent' materialy containing metallic Wool, saidcasing having a plurality of external ribs, ,punched-out. tearing tabs provided at spaced intervals in said casing, with one coniplete rib locatedbetween each pair of tabs.
' Signed at thecity, county and State of New York, this 14th`day vof January, 1927.
