.c. D. BoNsALL LOAD LIFTING ARRANGEMENT Filed Ncv. l2, 1926 l l l//l/l/ CHARLES DAID BNSALL, 0F
v1,6sw.,197A
LOAD-LIFTIHG ARRANGEIJIENT.
Application filed November 12, 1326. Serial No. 147,989.
Ihe device relates to railway reight cars and comprises means which reinforce the root structure and provides places tor attaching load li'iting devices, such load lifting devices being used to move heavy articles into and out ot the car or to move such articles within the car or to place one part of the load over another part7 such as double decking automobiles.
in object ot the invention is to provide a longitudinally extending load lifting beam vhich cooperates with the usual ridge pole ot a car so that each reinforces the other, i. e., the load lifting beam strengthens the ridge pole to resist the weaving stresses o the car and supports the rooting and also the ridge pole assists the load lifting beam in sustaining the weight ot the load being litted. Another object oithe invention is to attach the beam to the ridge pole between the carlines, as well as at the carlines, so as to slierten the span of the load lifting beam between its supports.
ly arranging these elements to coact with each other their size and strength may each be reduced, thereby reducing their weightand cost.
In the drawings'.
Fig. l shows a lateral cross section ot part ot a railway car with my device applied hereon.
2 shows a longitudinal cross section Fig. ot part ot a railway L ca with my device applied thereon on lf-2 oi Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3*-3 oi' Fig. 2.
Figs. 4 and 5 show the relation of the beam and ridgepole atthe carline oi a modified form.
Figs. 6 and 7 show a modified form of attachment ot' the beam to the ridge pole between the carlines.
The usual parts ot the car are shown wherein 1 is side plate; 2 the end plate; 3 the carline; 4 the ridge pole; 5 the roof sheet; 6 the transverse cap; the running boards and 10 the purlins. rlhe carlines 3 span distance between the opposite side plates 1 and are attached thereto in any convenient manner., and the ridge pole 4 extends longitudinally ot the car and is attached to the carlines 3 and end plate 2 so as to brace the rootl structure and also support the rooting extends the the 5. In ordinary construction the roof sheets or other rooting rests upon the side plates, purlins and ridge pole.
My device comprises a longitudinally eX- tending load lifting beam 8 which preferably full length yot the car and has its opposite ends secured to the end plates 2, thus increasing its range oi' operation. rhis beam is positioned below the ridge pole 4 (or purlin 10) and spaced apart trom it so as to provide a space 9 tor the insertion ot the rope or chain ot a load httmg device or a hool or ice tong.
T he load lifting beam may be attached directly to the carline, as shown in Fig. 4, or may be attached to the carline and ridge pole, as shown in Fig. 2. Filler blocks 114-11 may be used between the ridge pole and the beam which may be tapped into these members if desired. The load lifting beam is attached to the ridge pole between the carlines but the means o attachment only partially closes the space 9 between the beam and ridge pole. The means of attachment, such as bolt (or bolts) 12 causes the beam and pole to act in unison to resist the weaving ot the car, and, furthermore, any load sustained by the load lifting beam is partially transmitted to the ridge pole and also the beam helps the ridge pole sustain the roof or any load therein.
Figs. 4 to 7 inclusive show modied iforms wherein the load lifting beam 8 is attached directly to the carline 3 and the attachment 13 o't the beam to the pole, between the carlines, is such that the beam and attachment may be removed or replaced without disturbing the rooting by simply removing the bolt 14.
My construction may be used in combination with Yeither a purlin, ridge pole or other longitudinally extending :trame member.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred form oi' the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that va-` rious modifications thereof within the scope o'l the claims will occur to persons skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. In a railway car, the combination of a plurality of carlines. a longitudinally extendbeam, and other fillers beb plurality of carlines, a longitudinally extend ing frame member, a load lifting beam po- 1( sitioned below said member and spaced apart therefrom, and means for .attaching said curing Said bracket to said member.
