Description

Nov. 20, 1928. 1,692,062
E. J. TOBIN DRINKING WATER SERVING OLLA Filed April 5. 1928 INVENTOR.
1 1 TTORNELIS.
Patented Nov. 20, 1928.
UNITED STATES I EDMUND J. TOBIN, OF ALT ADENA, CALIFORNIA.
DRINKING-WATER-SERVING OLLA.
Application filed April 3,
My invention relates to ollas for drinking water and it has for its principal object to provide means whereby the olla is kept full of water at all times so that the evaporation takes place over the entire surface of sa d olla instead of only a portion thereof, as is the case when the arrangement is such that the contents do not completely fill said olla.
It is known that as the water percolates through the porous body of an olla and evaporation takes place on the surface thereof, that said body is kept clean, but the upper part of the olla is not filled with water owing to the fact that the upper bottle, or other receptacle for the original supply of water extends down into the olla some little distance, and water does not rise in the olla above this point, leaving the upper part of the olla empty. As a result, this part of the body of said olla has no evaporation action and becomes clogged and discolored and unsightly and unsanitary. Then it is also 1mpossible to tell how low the water is 111 the olla without removing the upper reservo1r and inspecting the inside of the olla.
I have conceived an improvement which makes possible and practical two advantages and eliminates the objections above men tioned. I have conceived the idea of interposing an intermediate member, preferably of heavy glass, between the top of the olla and the upper reservoir, or bottle of water,
which holds said reservoir or bottle above the top of the olla, thus filling it with water to the very top and even up into the intermediate member, and at the same time makes it possible to see clearly how high the water is, should the bottle be empty, without removing any of the upper containers.
In order to fully explain my invention, I have shown one practical embodiment thereof on the accompanying sheet of drawings, which I will now explain.
The figure is a side elevation of a complete outfit, partly in section, embodying my invention.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, 2 designates an olla, which is understood to be a porous earthen ar for drinking water which is kept cool by evaporation from the outer surface, and it is provided with a faucet 3, and is set into a dish 4, with an offset flange 5, whereby the evaporation drippings run ning down the outside of said olla are caught in said dish 4.
1928. Serial No. 266 913 The top of said olla 2 is formed to receive the lower edge 6, of an intermediate member 7. This is cemented into place, as at 8, whereby to make a water tight joint.
In the present showing, I have indicated the usual water bottle 9, inverted and set into the open upper end of said intermediate member 7 with any suitable cushion or gasket, as 10, around the upper edge of said inter mediate member 7. Said intermediate member 7 is shown of heavy glass, sufliciently strong to carry the bottle of water 9, and to hold it so that the neck and mouth of said bottle is held above the top of said olla, as at 11, the Water filling the olla and rising into the intermediate member, substantially as indicated in the drawings.
It will thus be seen that the olla is completely filled with water and that the water can be seen in the intermediate member 7,
without removing any of the parts of the apparatus. This makes it certain that the action of evaporationwill take place over the entire surface of the olla and that there will be no portion thereof to become. discolored or clogged with deposit or foreign matter, and at the same time giving an attractive appearance to the apparatus because ofthe clear glass intermediate member into which the water rises.
It will be understood, of course, that other reservoir for the original supply of water can be used instead of the bottle, and I do not limit my invention to the particular showing here made for descriptive. purposes, except as I maybe limited by the hereto appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination, an olla for drinking water, an intermediate member secured into the upper end thereof with a water tight joint, and adapted to support a reservoir of water therein and above the top of said olla, and a reservoir of water set into said intermediate member with its lowermost part above the top of said olla, whereby water completely fills said olla and rises into said member and is visible through the side thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. An 011a for drinking Water having 5 means for holding a reservoir of Water above the top of said 011a, said meansbeing adapted to permit Water to rise above the topmost part of the 011a proper, whereby to make possible evaporation over the entire outer sur- 10 face of said 011a, for the purpose described.
4. In combination, an 011a for drinking water, a glass member secured in its top and adapted to support a Water bottle inverted therein and holding the mouth of said bottle a CountyfCaiifornia, this 29th day of March,
EDMUND J. ToB IN.
