The present invention is directed to improvements in rocker arms for internal combustion engine valves.
The primary object of the invention 1s to provide a device of this character so constructed that noise and vibration incident to the operation thereof will be elimlnated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind wherein the clearance between the arms is reduced to a minimum in order that the objectionable tapping occasioned by contact of the arms will. be eliminated, thereby providing a rocker arm which is practically noiseless in operation.
With these and other objects in View, th1s invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated 1n the accompanying drawings, in which,-

Referring to the drawings, 1 designatesa pin upon which is pivotally supported the rocker arm designated as a whole by the numeral 2, said arm consisting of upper and lower arms 3 and 4, the outer ends of which are pivotally connected to the pin 1. The arm 3 is formed with a web 5 havinga beveled lower face 6 which is adapted to contact with the beveled face 7 formed on the arm 4 when the engine is in motion. The arm 4 is further provided with side flanges 8 and between which is rotatably mounted a roller 9.'for coaction with the cam 10 of the cam shaft 11. The arm 3 is provided with a shoe 12 adapted to engage the valve stem tappet 13 of conventional type. The arms 3 and 4 are provided with recesses 14 and 15 for engagement with the opposite terminals of the coilspring 16, said spring servingto move the arms apart as 1927. Serial No. 189,360.

It will be obvious that as the cam 10 engages the roller 9 the spring 16 will be slight- 1y compressed before the beveled face 6 and face 7 contact, thus preventing noise as the arm 12 exerts a thrust upon the arm 3 to cause the shoe 12 to actuate the stem 13.
In Figure 4, the rocker arm 17 comprises a pair of upper and lower arms 18 and 19, but in lieu of a coil spring a leaf spring 20 is employed and has one end fixed, as at 21, to the outer end of the arm 19, the other end thereof being slidable upon said arm. The arm 19 is further provided with a beveled face 22 which coacts with the beveled face 23 of the web 24 of the arm 18. The arm 19 is provided with a. lug 24' which coacts with the cam 25 of the cam shaft 26. 1
In Figures 5 .and 6, another modified form of the invention, the rocker arm 27 consists of upper and lower arms 28 and 29, the respective arms having beveled faces 30 and 31, there being a recess 32 in'the arm 29 for the I reception of a rubber bumper 32 for absorbing shock and preventing noise when the faces approach each other. The arm 29 is formed with a downwardly inclined extension 34 provided with a recess 35, in which rests the lower end of the coil spring 36, the
upper end of which seats in the recess 37 formed in the arm 28. The arm 29 is further provided with a lug 38 which coacts with the cam 39.
The operation of the modified forms of the invention are substantially the same as that of the preferred form, therefore a detailed description therefor is not thought necessary since the construction and operation will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
