rlhis invention relates to improvements in battle plates adapted to be removably inserted in the iues'of Vboilers for interrupting the iiow of hot gases therethrouglnand for distributing the gases in the flue so that all of the available heat units will .be distributed throughout the heating surfaces of the fines thereby increasing the heatingI efficiency ,of thefboiler, with a material reduction in iuel consumption. l o
Aiurther object is to provide improved barfles of this character, a plurality of which may be Coupled together in fixed spaced relation with respect to each other, and thewhole adapted Yto be rear ily inserted into Aand as readily removed from a. flue, as a unit. In carrying out this invention there ,are provided a plurality of baille members 10 and 11 which are of a diameter somewhat less than the interior diameter of the flue in which they are to be inserted.
Each of the battles 10 embody a plurality of radially arranged blades 12, which are joined at their base to form a body or hub portion, and which body or hub portion is provided with an opening 13 therethrough.
Each of the battles 11 also embody a plurality of radially arranged blades which are joined at their base to form a body portion, and which body portion or hub is provided with an opening 15 therethrough.
The blades of the respect-ive vbailles are backwardly inclined to give the baliles a gen- 'eral conicalv formatiomand the-,proximate edges of adjacent bladesof eachofthe baffles diverge from the body or apexportion of vthe baille outwardly to form passages 16 therebetween,V so that the flow of the heated gases through the fluewill not be entirely retarded, and at the same time some of the heated gases will be directed against the walls of the flue orpipe as the conical shape ofthe baffles form withv the Hue gradually reduced passages vfor the heated gases between theouter surface of the battles and the flue, all of the bellies in.-

The bafies are spaced from each other in directions lengthwise of thevlue, in any suitable manner, such as by means of spacing members 19, the ends of which contact with the respective adjacent baiiies.

W hat is claimed as new is z- `l. ln combination, a plurality of battles, each of said bailles'being of a substantially cone shape, a spacing member disposed between adjacent ba'fes, and a rod passing through the baflies and spacing member 'for securing them together as a unitary structure, the baffles being provided with a plurality of extended and substantially V- sliaped notches, said notches opening through the body ofthe baiile's, said baiiles forming with the flue gradually reduced passages 'for the gases and constituting the sole means oi' support ior the baiiles within the flue.
2. ln combination, a plurality of battles, each of 'said baiiles being of a substantially cone shape', a spacing member disposed between adjacent bellies, a rod passing through the ba'l'lies and spacing member for securing them together' as a unitary structure, the bai:- i'les being provided with a plurality of extended andy substantially V-shaped notches, said notches opening through the body of the bailies, and a projection on certain ot the battles for positioning them and constituting the sole supporting means for the bailles within the flue, said bailies forming with the 'flue vgradually reduced passages orthe gases, all or the baiiies inclining in the same direction throughout the length of the flue.
3. ln combination, a tlue, a plurality of ba'liles arranged at intervals in said Hue, a rod extending through the centers of the baliles for connecting them, andmeans' spacing adjacent baffles, said balles-being of a substan- Y tially conical formation and forming with the flue gradually reduced passages for the gases betweenlthe outer surface of the baiiles and the flue, a portion 01"' certain of the baliies being extendedbeyond the remaining portion of the baille to engage the flue wall and constituting the sole means for supporting and maintaining the .baffles within and substantially centrally of the flue, the said extended portions of the bailies being within the plane of the remaining portion ofthev body of the respective baffles. j i

In combination, a plurality of bailles each ot which is of a substantially cone shape, a rod extending through the centers of the battles for connecting them, means for maintaining the baiiles spaced from each other, all of said parts constituting a unitary structure for free insertioninto and removal from a flue as a unit, andy means for supporting the structure and 'for maintaining the baiiles substantially centrally of the flue, all of said parts being disposed entirely'within and independent of the flue, said bafflesl being provided with extended substantially V- shaped notches opening through the bodyof the baille and also through the rear end thereof, said baffles forming With the wall of the flue gradually reduced passages for the gases.
