This invention relates to pressing machines as garment and laundry pressing machines having an actuating mechanism including a start and stop motor and a toggle for trans- 5 mitting the movement of the motor to the movable element of the press and has for its object a particularly simple motion transmitting mechanism for actuating the toggle and particularly for starting the breaking of the toggle when the motor is starting. and effecting the final straightening of the toggle at the time the motor is about to stop, whereby a change or reduction in leverage ratio occurs so that the final heavy pressure is produced and also the initial opening of the press while under such heavy pressure, without overloading the motor or, in other Words, so that the load on the motor is substantially even throughout the intermittent operatlon of themotor. The toggle links inthe machinesv heretofore used are substantially the same as that shown herein and includes links 8 and 9 pivoted together at 10, the link 8 being pivoted at 11 to the rear arm of the yoke 4 and the link 9 being pivoted to the frame 12. The link 8 includes a suitable com ression spring 13, but as the construction 0 the toggle in-itself forms no part of this invention, further description is thought to be unnecessary.

The construction of the tumbler switch and;
controller and the operation of the machine by such tumbler switch and controller forms no part of our invention and as the same is shown in patent to Andree, No. 1,397,601, May 24, 1921,"further description is thought to be unnecessary.
Witha stop and start motor and crank, an excessive load is thrown on the motor during the starting and stopping to obtain and release the final heavy pressure, and the crank and the connecting rod must stop in a straight line. The moving of the crank and connecting rod into a straight or dead center line thrustsa sudden load on the motor and on account of this sudden load, the crank stops short of the dead center line and manual trip release means are resorted to to initially release the pressure on the toggle before the motor can be started to eifect the opening of the press.
This invention relates to connections between the shaft 7 and the toggle whereby the tog 1c is finally straightened and initially bro en by varying or reducing the leverage ratio between the motor and the press head. This reducing of the load on the motor and at the same time effecting the maximum pressure on the head 2 is effected by providing the shaft 7 with two cranks having different throws, the cranks being preferably arranged in the same radial line, a connecting rod or. link connecting the crank of longer'throw with the toggle by a lost motion connection and a link connecting the crank of shorter throw and the toggle 'and operating to take up the lost motion in the first mentioned connecting rod and straighten the toggle froma near straightened position effected by the first mentioned connecting rod and to take up the lost motion in the opposite direction to initially break the tog le. In other words, the cranks come in e ective action successively.
The term cranks is used merel for convenience and it will be understood that any form of rotary eccentric means may be used. Also it will be understood that the reduction in the leverage ratio broughtv about by two cranks may be used with motion transmitting means other than a toggle.

23, 24 and 24 is a unitary crank with two it crank pins of diflerent radii. 25 is a connecting rod or link between the longer crank 22 and the toggle, this rod 25 being mounted on the crank pin 24 at one end and connected to the jointlO of the toggle at its other end by a lost motion connection, the link 25 having a short lengthwise slot 26 at its rear end for receiving the pivot pin 10.
The link connecting the shorter crank 21 and the, toggle comprises sections out of operative relation to eachother when the tog le is folded as shown in Figure 3 and mova%le into abutting or thrusting relation with each other and with the toggle and into pulling relation tothe toggle when the toggle has been moved into a nearly straightened posiwhen the circuit is again closed through the motor 14 to open the press.
As here illustrated, the shorter crank 21 and the toggle comprises threesections 27, 28 and 29, the section 27 being mountedat one end on the crank pin 23 of the shorter crank 21 and extending rearwardly therefrom; and the section 28 being pivoted on the pivot pin 10 ofthe joint of the toggle and extending forwardly therefrom,
the sections 27 and 28 having respectively shoulders 30 and 31 arranged to be brought into abutting relation as shown in Figure 2 during'the closing of the press, so that as the link between the cranks approach the dead center line these shoulders come into abutting relation and the section 27 thrusting against the section 28 finally straightens the toggle and moves the joint 10 thereoffrom the front end of the slot 26 toward the rear end of the slot 26 of the link 25. u
The section 29 is pivoted at 32 to the section 27 and normally extends upwardly and rearwardly and. has a hook 33 at its rear end arranged to hook over the pivot 10 of the toggle when the toggle-is in its straightened position, so that when the motor is energized to open the press, the hook 33 pulling on the pivot pin 10 initially breaks the toggle, this eing permitted by the slot 26 in the lever 25. The sections 28 and 29 are connected together to move in synchronism by a suitable connection as a pin 39 on the section 28, which pin extends through a lengthwise slot in the section 29. Also the sections 27 and 28 are guided intoabutting relation and the section 27 held from undue displacement by a cam plate 41 suitably secured to the frame and having a cam slot 42 therein for receiving a follower on the section 27, this follower being usually at the end of the pivot pin 32. The section 27 is shown as bifurcate'd and also the section 28 is bifurcated, and the section 29 extends between the bi furcations of the sections 27 and 28. The slot 42 in the cam plate 41 is formed with a dip or deflected portion near one end as seen in Figure 6. This deflected portion causes the section 27 or the shoulder 30 thereof to dip or to hook under the shoulder 38 of the section 29, as these sections 27 and 28 are coming into a straight line. The shoulder 31 overhangs the dip portion of the slot 42 and causes the shoulder 30 to dip under or to clear the overhanging part of the shoulder 31 as the links or sections 27 and 29 come into abutting relation.
In operation, assuming that the press is open and the toggle in its position shown in Figure 3, the operator throws the tumbler switch 18 by a suitable handle so that the current passes through the motor 14 and the motor starts actuating the shaft .7
The motion is initially transmitted by the longer crank 22 through the link 25 to the toggle and moves the toggle nearly into the dead center line of the toggle. As the to gle approaches a straight line, the section'2 of the link connected to the shorter crank is brought into abutting relation with the section 28, so that a continued rotation'of the shaft 7 moves the cranks into their dead center line with the connecting rod links and moves the toggle links 8, 9 into their dead center line thus applying final or heavy pressure by motion transmitted through the shorter crank.
When the cranks complete the half revolution, the controller switch within thecasing 20 automatically breaks the circuit as in the Andree patent referredto.
Also as the link 28 comes into abutting relation with the link 27, thelink 29 having the hook 33, is brought into a pulling relation with the joint 10 of the toggle, so that whenthe circuit is again closed through the motor by actuating the tumbler switch 18, thesection 29 having the hook 33 is pulled fo rwar'dly by the short crank and initially breaks the toggle. After the toggle is broken,
the longer crank 22 through the connecting link 25 completes the opening operation.

mechanism for actuating the movable element, including an intermittently rotatable shaft, having a pair of cranks, one crank L having a different throw than the other, driving means for actuating the shaft a half revov lution during each intermittent operation, motion transmitting means between the cranks and the movable element, including a toggle, a link connecting the crank of longer throw and the toggle by a lost motion connection, and means connecting the crank of shorter throw and the toggle, said means comprising folding sections, one being mounted on the shorter crank, a second section norm'ally out of abutting relation with the first I section, and movable into abutting relation with the first section to finally thrust the toggle into straightened position, and means for effecting the movement of the second section.

In a pressing machine, the combination of cooperating pressing elments, one of which is movable toward and from the other, mecha-" nism for actuating the movable element in cluding an intermittently rotatable shaft having a pair of cranks, one crank having a different t hrow than the other, driving means for actuating the shaft a half revolution during each intermittent operation, motion transmitting means between the cranks and the movable element including a toggle, a link connecting the crank-of longer throw and the toggle by a lost motion connection, and means connecting the crank of. shorter throw and the toggle, said means comprising folding eaner? sections, one being mounted on the shorter crank, a second section normally out of abutting relation with the first section, and movof the first and second sections.

In a pressing machine, the combination of cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, mechanism for actuating the movable element, including an intermittently rotatable shaft having a pair of cranks, one crank having a different throw than the other, driving means for actuating the shaft a half revolution during each intermittent operation, motion transmitting means between the shaft and the movable element including a toggle, a link connecting the crank of the longer throw and the toggle by a lost motion connection, and means connecting the crank of shorter throw and the toggle, said means inv eluding folding sections connected *respectively to the toggle and to the shorter crank and being normally out of effective motion transmitting relation and movable into effective motion transmitting relation with each other and with the toggle as the toggle is brought into nearly straightenedposition by the first link and the longer crank, and means for shifting the sections into and out of motion transmitting relation as the toggle straightens and after. the toggle is initially broken.

In a pressing machine, the combination of cooperating pressing elements, one of" which is movable toward 'and from the other, and mechanism for actuating the movable element, including an intermittently rotatable shaft having a pair of cranks thereon,and motion transmitting means between the cranks and the movable element, movable into action successively, and driving means for actuating the shaft a onehalf revolution during each operation, the cranks movable in substantial- I ly the same radial line, and one being longer than the other, and aimovable part to which 'the motion of the cranks is transmitted, the motion transmitting means comprising a link mounted on one crank and connected to said part, a sectional link comprising a section mounted on the other crank and a-second section shiftable into and out of engagement with the first section and said part, and means operated by the first link and the part actuated thereby for moving the sections into and out of coacting position.
