SIGN CHARACTER A ND SECURING MEANS THEREFOR.

This invention relates to novel means for securing sign characters, such as letters and numerals, to awnings, canvas tents and the canvas tops of vehicles, and has for one of its objects `the provision of meansoi' this character which shall be simple, durable and inexpensive and through .the medium of which a skilled or unskilled person cany readily secure the sign characters -to the article to which they are to be applied.

A further object of the invention is the `provision of means of the character stated which will permit the sign characters to be secured in place without noticeably distorting the article to which they are secured and which will permit theready removal of the sign characters in order to secure vthem to another article or new ones substituted therefor.

A still further object of the invention is to secure the sign characters to the article in a manner to permit the free circulation of airbetween the parts whereby to prevent the laccumulation of moisture between the sign characters and article and the consequent deterioration of the parts.

With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing, wherein:

In the drawing, 1 designates the sign character and 2 the article to which it is secured. strip 10 is positioned between the `flange 7 of the sleeve 6 and the article 2, and is provided with an opening l1 for thereception of the sleeve. The head 9 is of less thickness than the depth of the recess 4 so as to permit the recessl to be closed in a manner to obscure the head from view by any suitable material, as Vindicated at 12. In practice, the sign character will be secured at one or more points to the article. The number of points at which the sign character is secured to the article will depend solely upon the size of the former. To adapt the'article forfthe application of theisign character thereto, it is only neces sary tol provide the former with one or more .openings for the reception of the sleeve or vstrip 10, and the latter forms a backing for the vertical edges of the sign character, it should bey apparent that the si character is irmlysecured in place and t at the article is not noticeably distorted. After the application of the sign character' 1, the ma- 'terial 12 can be applied. As the material hides the head 9 the securing means will not detract from the appearance of the .sign

In combination, a freely iiexible article, a sign character having a recessed inner side and arranged with its edges in contact with the article, a bolt passing throughthe sign character and article, a nut applied to the bolt, means mounted on the bolt between the article and the nut and extending from ed e to edge of the sign character to engage the articleagainst the edges of the sign character, ,and a member surrounding the bolt and extending from the nut to the inner side of the sign character and adapted in conjunction with said means to limit the distance that the nut ma be turned up and thus revent the noticea le distortion of the/artic e.

In combination, a freely flexible article, a sign character having a recessed inner side and arranged with its edges in contact with 'the article, a bolt passing through the si character and article, a nut applied to t e bolt, and a backing or washer strip mounted upon the bolt between the article and nut and extendin from edge to edge of the sign character an adapted to limit the distance that the nut may be turned up and thus prevent the noticeable distortion of the article.
