The present invention relates to an improved basket top.
Shipping baskets are now made with a top which is constructed of thin strips of wood arranged in circular form which are either nailed together or fastened together with wire clips. A. heavier piece of wood is -fas-' toned to the rest of the top and extends about one or two inches beyond the edge of the basket, slipping under the handles.
Tn shipment, it often happens that the basket is spread and the projection slips out from under the handle and thebasket is'left open, or it may be that the strip itself becomes broken and allows the contents of the baskets to come out.
The important object of this invention is twofold; first, it prevents the basket from spreading; and second, in the event the woodon strip breaks, the lid will be intact and in place.
Another very important object of the invention lies in the provision of an improved basket top of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, strong and v durable, inexpensive to manufacture, eflicient and reliable, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
lVith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the letter B denotes a basket hav ing a top T. This top T as is usual, includes a plurality of strips 5 arranged in a circular formation, that is to produce a round top. A bar 6 of heavier material than the strips 5 is fastened to the top to extend diametrically thereof and to have a length greater than the diameter of the top T so as to project through bails 7 which form the handles of the baskets. Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is 1. In combination, a basket, a top on the basket, said top being provided with a bar extending beyond the edges thereof and the edges of the basket, said basket being provided with bail handles through which the ends of the bar extend, and a strip of ductile material fastened longitudinally on top of the bar to extend co-extensively therewith and having its ends freed from the bar so that they may be curved upwardly and over the bails.
