My invention relates to improvements in fasteners, particularly adapted for securing the covers of fruitibaskets and the like in position. i g
It is an'object of the invention to provide a fastener which may be easily a plied to securely hold the cover of the asket in place without injury to its contents, or liability of displacement while in transit.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a reinforcing member carried by the' cover adapted to be engaged'by the fastener whereby the cover structure is relieved from undue strain and which enables the cover-to 15 be more firmly secured in place.
. A further object of the invention is to provide a. fastener which when not in use is movable so as not to lnterfere wlth the nest- I ing of the baskets and ma be em loyed as a retaining means for holding the askets in nested relation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastener of the above-mentioned. character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efiicient in use and inexpensive to manufacture.
.Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming'a. part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1, is a top plan view of a basket, showing my fastener applied thereto,
Fig. 2, is a fragmentary side elevation of the same,
Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the reinforcing member employed in conjunction with my fastener,
Fig. 4, is a detail cross sectional view show i'ng how the fastener is applied,
Fig. 5, is a top plan view showing a modified form of the invention,
Fig. 6, is a fragmentary side elevation of the same,
Fig. 7, is a view-showing the position of the fastener when a series of basketsare in nested relation, and,
Fig. 8, is an enlarged sectional on lines88 of Fig. 7.
In the drawing, wherein for'the purpose of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my inventioma conventional t e of basket cover is shown in Figs. 1 and ghavin'g the usual cross slats 3, 4,5, 6, 7 and view. taken 4 inserted in the 8, the slats 3 and 4 being paired and in spaced parallel relation to each other, as are alsothe slats 5 and 6- and the slats 7 and 8. The outer ends of the slats are secured to the'upper edge ofthe band or ring 13, as indicated 'at'14, A retaining slat 9 extends across the top of the cover havin its ends usual loopsor han les 15 of thebaskct. I Y
-Arranged at diametrically opposite points of the cover are re-inforcmg members 16, formed from a piece of wire which extends across the ends 'of the slats-'5 and 6, having 4 its ends bent downwardly at right angles and terminating in upturned books 17 .eggageable with the lower of, the band The fasteners 18, as more clearly shown 'in Fig. 4, consist of a piece of pliable wire having one and bent at right angles, as at 20 and pivotally mounted in the mner and outer hoo s 11 and 10 of the basket, extending t rough the staves 12 which are clamped between the hoops 11 and 10." When not in use the fasteners 18 normally i he in a horizontal plane in contact with the outer surface of the hoo 10, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. o secure the cover in place the fasteners are rotated to a verl tical position and their upper ends-19 are bent over the re-inforcing. members 16, which are bowed slightly outward. It willbe seen that the cover s positioned so the fasteners will enga ethe re-inforcing mem- .9 bers intermediate t e slats 5 and 6, andthe bent end extends down far enou h' to prevent circumferentialmovement o the cover. As shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the fasteners may be employed to retain the baskets in nested relation when moved from place to place, by turning the fasteners down and ending thelower ends, as at 28, into fric-. i
tional enga ement with the outer band, 10 of the next 'asketbelow. r no A modified form of'the invention is shown in Fi 5 and 6, consisting of a continuous wire oop 25, substituted for the band 13, 1
which bears on the ends of. the cross slats and extends beneath'the ends of the retain- 106' ing slat 9, externallyof the handle.' When this construction is used the fasteners 18 are bent over the hoop 25, as well as the re-inforcin members 16.
Thus, itis seen that a simple and eficient no fastener is provided to secure the covers of baskets in place, which will firmly secure mediate said slats.
the cover against displacement while in transit. I
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewithshown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that certain changes in the shape, size and arrangement 01 the parts may be resorted to wit out ;depart1ng from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I Having thus described my invention, I
claim: J
1. A basket fastener, in combination with the usual basket cover, of a re-inforcin member extending across a pair of slats o the cover and attached thereto and a fastener mounted in the rim of the basket, the free end of said fastener bein adapted to engage said re-inforcing mem r inter;
2. A basket cover fastener consisting of a piece of pliable wire having one end.
mounted in the'rim of the basket, and a. re-inforcing member extending across a air of slats of the cover having its ends ent downwardly and terminating in upturned hooks engaging the lower edge of the cover band, the freeend of said fastener being bendable over said re-inforcing member.
3. A basket cover fastener consisting of a piece of pliable Wire having one end mountedv in the rim of the basket'and a re-inforcing member attached to the cover having a horizontal portion in'close relation to the cover band, said horizontal portion havin min-atin in upturned hooks engaging the lowered e of the cover band, the free end of said iastener being adapted to engage the horizontal portion of said re-inforcing member.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
