UNETED STATES FRANK ONEILL, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
JAR LID.
' Application filed August 21,. 1923. Serial No. 658,488.
This invention relates to closures, especially for wide mouthed ware or glass jars This invention has utility when incorporated for holding the glass lids or caps of containers in sealed position.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a jar equipped with a closure in accordance with the invention herein; 7
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section on an enlarged scale of the lid of Fig. 1 having its sealing band partially sea-led;
Fig 3 is a perspective view of an unsealed or removed sealing band, and F, 4 is a fragmentary view of screw Land lid holder. I
Jar 1 is shown as having neck portion 2 about opening 3. This neck portion 2 terminates in a seat 4 and outward overhang 5.
The closure of this disclosure embodies a glass lid 6 having an annular seat 7, inner side or" which is determined by a depending iortion 8. On this annualarseat 7 is shown a compressible gasket 9 which may be of li ero-r rubber, In container closing position the depending portion 8 rides into the opening 3 and serves to center the id 6 and bring the seat 7 in position to oppose the seat 5 with the gasket 9 therebctween, This gasket 9 accordingly is but slightlypexposed to the container contents and such exposure is only indirect due to the shielding action of the depending portion 8 of the lid 6. Furthermore the outer edge of this gasket protected by band 1O. In practice when these containers are to be charged and sealed in quantity the bands 10 may be supplied with upper inwardly directed flange 11, tongue 12 through opening 13 bent backward to complete this split ring band. The edge of this band remote from the inwardly directed flange 11 has a skirt section 14L. This lid 6 and gasket 9 together with the band 10 are assembled wi h this flange 11 against seat 15 on the lid 6. This assembly is then snugly forced into closing position as to the container for slighthly compressing the gasket 9, and then a crimper is effective for bending the skirt 141 into position to provide flange 16 as a sealing flange opposing the flange 11 thereby completing the sealing closure of the vessel as this flange 16 engages the shoulder or overhang 5. For access to the container it is only necessary to straighten the tongue 12 of this lacquered thin sheet metal band 110, open such band, and then release the In accordance with the invention herein there is provided a simple sanitary closure which may be readilyapplied in quantity and simply removed,
Instead of crimping in the lower edge of the band 10 to effect sealing, the lid 6 may be held in position by a partial rotation. To this end as shown in Fig. 4 shoulder 5 is provided with fragmentary threads 17 to be engaged by lugs 18 of the band 19 as such band is rotated clockwise in drawing lid 6 against the gasket 9.
lVhat is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is: p
A glass jar having an opening. provided with an overhang thereabout, said overhang forming a flat seat aboutthe opening and having multiple thread portions for the full transverse extent thereof, a gasket of seat width, a glass lid on said gasket extending over said seat for fully confining the gasket width between said seat and lid, said lid having a depending portion entering the ar to center the gasket and lid therewith, and a. sealing band ofring form embracing the lid, gasket and overhang, said sealing band having marginally inwardly extending flange portions, one engaging the lid to hold the l d against the gasket and the other providing inwardly extending tongues 00- act-ing with said thread portions of the overhang to form therewith a bayonet joint permitting angular shifting of the sealing band relatively to the jar in one direction for drawing the lid against the gasket and in the other direction for releasing the lid and band from the jar for opening the jar, said hand between said marginal flange portions being clear for readily locating the lid and gasket on the jar opening seat.
In witness whereof I afiix my signature.
