IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-ALARMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,137, dated October 26, 1875 application filed September 9, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CLINTON BOHANON and JOHN BOHANON, of Brookline, of the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burglar-Alarms and do here by declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved alarm; Fig. 2 a horizontal section, and Fig. 3 a vertical section, of it.

It is for application to a door-frame, and to be started into action by the door while the latter may be in the act of being opened.

In the drawings, A denotes a case or box, containing a common clock-alarm apparatus, B, and having in one edge a dovetailed groove, a, to receive a dovetailed tongue, b, of the attachment O. This latterviz., the attachment Cis a thin plate of metal, of the form as shown, and is provided with spurs c 0, ex-

' tended-from it at right angles. When used,

these spurs are to be driven into the inner side of a door-frame, so that when the door is closed it shall hold the attachment in place, with its tongue b projecting from the doorframe into the room.

To apply the alarm to a door-frame, when the attachment is fixed thereto, the tongue b is to be inserted in the groove a, which it should closely fit.

Within the box is a trigger, D, shaped as shown in Fig. 4. It is pivoted to a short shaft,

This trigger has a curved slot, f, made in it, as shown, such slot, whenthe trigger projects out of the case, being to receive a the alarm mechanism. The said cock is a lever, which turns horizontally on a fulcrum, i, and serves, while in engagement with the alarm mechanism, to hold it from sounding an alarm but, on being moved out ofengagelnent, sets free the said mechanism, to enable it to operate, so as to cause its bell It to be rapidly struck by the hammer l. The trigger, when turned into a vertical position, comes wholly within the box but when turned out horizontally such trigger projects out of the box, or through anopening in its edge, provided with a slide cover. The box has in its edge an opening, m, provided with a closing-slide, n. The trigger, when horizontal, projects through such opening; but when the trigger is vertical the opening may be closed by its cover, in which case the trigger will be out of the way, or, in other words, entirely in the case.

The alarm mechanism consists of a hell, it, a hammer, l, a shaft, 10, escapenient q, escapement-Wheel 'r, mainspring s, catch-wheel t,

pawl u, and its operative spring 'v, all being arranged as represented.

We claim as our invention as follows, viz:

The slotted trigger D and its supportingshaft, in combination with the alarm mechan ism B and the case A thereof, all being arranged, and the cock of the alarm being provided with a stud, g, to engage with the said trigger, as set forth.
