This inve'ntion relates to grinding devices and with regard to the more specifie features thereof 00 work supports, particularly such as those as are used in machines f0r grinding cylindrical bodies. One 0f the objects thereof is to provide a pracucal device of the above nature of simple and durable construetion. Another objeet is t0 Y provide a device 0f the above nature 0f exacu and dependable action under conditions of hard use. Another object is t0 provide a work support for a grinding machine of ihe above characcer adapted accurately to manntain the desired position of the work throughout long-continued use. Ot11ep objects Will be in part obvious and 111 part pointed out hereinafter. Y
The invention aceordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations 0f elements and arrangement of parts Wh10h will be exemplified in the structure hereinafter described a nd the scope 0f the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompan'ying drawing in which is shown one of Va1ious possible' embodiments 0f this invention,
Figure 1 is an end view;
Figure 2 is a side elevation 0f the-parts shown in Figure 1, the wheels being diagrammatically indicated and certain parts being broken awa'y in order to show the 0011- struction more c1early.
As best-shown in Figure 1 of the drawing,
there are provided two abrasive wheels 10 and 11 such as emery wheels driVen from any suitable source of power. These Wheels rotate as indicated by the arrows in F igure 1 in opposite directions, the wh eel 10 turno ing downwardly where it contacts the work and the wheel 11 uplwairdly. Also in the preferred use of this ii1vention, the wheel 10 is' 015 Inany times the speed 0f the wheel 11 and does substantially the entire grinding. The
wheel 11 serves as a regulating wheel. that is it go?erns ehe rotation of the work witho1it substantial slip, und. also feeds 01 advances the work in the direction of the arrow thereon in Figure 2 of the drawing. This .latter action is brought about by a s1ight relative inclination between the direetion of V travel of the work and the direc tion of traveil 0f t-he active fzi ce of the regulating wheel, whereby the latter exerts a. lengthwise thrust 011 the work. This angle is relative und either the work or the Wheel itself may be inclined with respect t0 ehe vertical; the latter arrangement being employed here as indicated in Figure 2. The work here shown 4 at 12 es comprising a series 01: short cylindrical rolle supported between wheels 10 and 11 is acted upon in accordance with the pri'nciples sei; forth in my patent, Reissue N0. 15,035, although vari0us features of the machine are not here shown as they form in themselves no part of the present invention.
Turning now to the work support, which is the part m0st closely related to my inventiqn, it may*here be noted that this compr 1ses a ear'fier member 13 mounted in any su1table manner in a supporting post 14 for universal adjustment. As he1e shown it is held in posit'ion by a pivot holt 15 passing through upright slots 16 in the part 14 and a round hole in the carrier member. This arrangement would of eourse permit 015 vertical andangular adjucment, 01: the carrier, and lateral adjustnrie'nt may be gained by any suitable means such as the slot 17 in a flange 18 on the post 14, through whieh slota screw 19 passes into the frame 20 of the machine. It is 1:0 be understood that all of these adjustmente are illustrated merely in a. diagrammat1c way.
In the upper portion 0f the carrier member 13 there is. formed a recess 22 shaped to provide undercut Walls 28 and Which may extend from end to 01101 thereof. The member 13 is preferably split into two parts as indicated ab 21 in the drawing and may be spread apart 017 elamped toget her by holt 15 to grip the part inserted in its recess, as hereinafter explained. It is to be n0ted tha.t although the recess is shown as extending from end to end of the support, many of the advantageous features of this invention may 'be achieved in a eonstruction in which the recess extends part way only, the member positioned therein being inserted either endwise from one enc1 01: the support or by the separa tion of the two parts of the support. The shape of recess 22 is subject t0 considerable" vziriation but it is here shown as an equi-lateral andequiangular hexagon. It might well be a similarly symmetrical octagon 01 -0f other form, and in fact in so far as certain broad features of the inventionare concerned its walls might be eylindrical. It should preferably however, possess two characteristics namely, its Walls, or 0ne of them, should overhang porti0ns 0f the recess; and it should be of such form es to permit a wear member 24 positioned therein, to be turnecl or removed and re-inserted with aehanged surface exposed. Preferably the wear meinber 24 fits closely in the recess in whieh it is positioned, but many of the broacler features of my invention may be aehieved in a construction in which the wear member cl0es not interlock into the reeess against rotation about its own axis and it is merely held from such rotation by the clamping action of the portions 0f th e member 13.
It is also to be noted that although the member 24 may comprise a single continuous part, it is nevertheless aclvantageous' to build it in seetions as the parts 2P, 24" ancl 24. These sections furthermore are preferably interlocked one with another at their ends as by' the lugs 25 fitted within corresponcling recesses 26, thus holding the parts in exact alignment.
This member 24 as above noted is formecl 0f harcl or wear-resisting material and exposes a wearing surface on which the work rests. In this manner the rotaizion of the work as it is ground will have only a slight wearing effeet on its support and the te'ndency 130 wear a groove in the latter witl1 consequent inaccumcy, is considerably reduced. When however the upper surface has become worn it is necessary merely to turn 01 remove the rod and re-insert it with another one 0f its faces in active position. As it exactly fits the symmetrical recess 22 it will in all positions be rigidly helcl in precletermined form, even though it is of light construetion, and any tendency 0f it t0 spring out of the member 13 is positively prevented. Furthermore a large number of Wearing surfaces is attained, und its life as well as the accuracy of its action und adaptability t0 meet conclitions of hard use, are much enhanced. It is also to be noted that even though the harclenecl memleer 23 be slightly warpecl, it Will, due to the fact that it is rigidly ancl firmly lockecl in osition throughout its length, be straightened and.held in such straightened condition.
Another feature of importance is tl1at when the sectional form of the part 24: is employed, those sections which are most subject to wem:
whieh are positioned immediacely between the grincling wheels, may be removed and replaced without the necessity for renewzl 0f the sections which a1e less worn.
It Will thus beseen that there is providecl a simple and practicaly construction in which the objects of this invention are achieved.
As various possible embodiments might be macle of the above invention ancl as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be unclerstood that all matter herein set forth or-shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim as my invention:
1. In grinding apparatus, in eombination, a work supporting member having a redess throughout it-s length, and a wemresisting member fitted int0 and. interlocked with said supporting member substantially throughout its length and adjustable with respeet thereto aboutits longitudinal axis to change tl1e surface exposed f0r wear.
2. In grinding apparatus, in combination a Work supporting member provideol with a recess, anal a wear member having the cross-secti0n of the equi-angular polygon fitted in said recess to interlock therew1th substantially throughout its length but exposing one 0f its faees for wear.
3. In grinding apparatus, in combination, a work supporting member having a. recess extencling throughout its length, a. wear resisting member seated within seid recess ancl comprising a plurality of sections arrangecl end 130 end and adapted to expose a substantially continuous line of contact 130 work of round section supported thereon, ancl means for holding said parts in assembled relation, said seetions being interlocked t0 permit rotation thereof as a unit in seid recess.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification this 28th clay of September, 1927.
