Application filed November 26, 1926. Serial No. 150,978.
The invention relates to a-portable device for receiving excreta or feces, such as a commode or other analogous structure, w ich partakesof the nature of an article of'furn ture to be used in a sick room, or for conve'nience when a toilet or privy is not conveniently located, or when a person is infirm or confined to a room. V
The invention provides a device of the nae ture aforesaid which supplies an article of furniture sanitary in its appointments and adapted for use asa night chair and embodying a receptacle for the voided effete matter the receptacle being of sheet material such as paper, to be disposed ofjtogether with the contents, in any determinate way.
While the drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements, the design may be varied and such other changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the inventionas. claimed without departing from the sp1r1t thereof.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the drawings hereto attached, in which,- v
Figure 1 is a side view of a portable com,- mode embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the device,
the back being in section.
Figure 3 is a front view, the seat and leg portions being in section.
Corresponding and. like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters. 7
The'portable commode in general outline presents the appearance of a chair and comprises a seat, a back, and legs.v The seat includes a member 1 in which is formed a central opening of circular outline and which has its outer marginal edge portions curved downwardly, as indicated at 2.; In the preferred construction, the member 1 consists of a sheet metal plate, the same being strengthened and reenforced by the outer clownturned edges 2 and the down-turned edge portion 3 bordering upon the central opening. The down-turned edge portion 3 is formed with a depression 4 which constitutes a seat for the reenforced. edge 5 of a receptacle 6. A second member 7 likewise of sheet metal,
is disposed upon the member 1 and hinged down-turned at its outer marginal edges, as
indicated at 9, and is formed with a central opening 10 and has the inner edge portion bordering upon said opening downturned, as
indicate'd at'll, to reenforce and stiffen the member as well as-to pr vide a comfortable r for the occupant when the device is in s rvice. The front down-turnedmarginof the member 7 engages snugly. over the front edge of the seatto frictioually hold the member down onto the seat. The opening 10 formed in the member 7 is.elongated whereas the correspondin, gopening formed in the member 1 is of circular outline to coincide with the reenforced edge 5 of the receptacle 6. The legs 12 at eachside of the device are connected by means of a bar 13 and are stayed by braces 14. The leg sections thus formed are pivotally connected to the seat and are retained in place by means of braces 15 which are preferably pivoted to the leg sections and seat and comprise pivotally connected sec tions, thereby admitting of the legs and braces folding against the under side of the seat when it is required to reduce the device to a compact form for carrying or laying aside.
The back comprises'a rectangular frame '10 A filling 18of canvas or other suitable materlal preferably occuples the space circumscribed by the frame and is connected thereto by means of lacings 19 or other preferred means. The back maybe folded upon the seat when required to provide a stool and when the legs are also folded, the article is reduced to a small space, as will be readily appreciated. The hinge connection 8 comprises two similar leaves and a member 8 which pivotally connects the leaves and has its ends extended and bent to engage the lower cross bar of the frame to which they are attached by suitable fastening means.
The receptacle 6 is preferably of conical form and consists of a textile or other suitable material shaped into the form of a cone and having a wire or other reenforcementapplied to its edge so as to hold the receptacle expanded and in suspension from the seat 4. Obviously, the receptacle 6 may be formed of any sheet material such as prepared paper, to be thrown away or otherwise disposed of pivoted at their ends to I the side members of the frame and to the seat.
after use. However, in the preferred construction, the receptacle 6 is constructed of a textile Which may be Washed should it become soiled. A paper container 20 is provided to be placed Within the receptacle 6 to receive the voided excreta or feces. paper container 20 has an inwardly disposed lip 21 at its upper or receiving end to form a deflector as well as to provide an ample closure for the container when holding voided matter whereby the same may be enclosed preliminary to dispo: 51' of the container.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim is: v V
1. A device oi the charact r specified comprising a eat member having; an opening and having' the portion bordering upon the opening turned dowmvardly, said downturned portion having an intermediate depression, a receptacle disposed Within the opening in the seat member and having: a reenforcement around its upper or ge seating; in the depression in the downturned portion of the seat member, and a companion member adapted to be supported upon tire seat member and having an opening opposite the opening of The the seat member, the portion of said member bordering upon said opening being downturned to extend Within the receptacle, the outer margin of said member being downturned to bear upon the seat member, and the intermediate portion being flat and bearing upon the reenter-cement of the receptacle to retain the same in the depression.
2. A folding and portable commode comprising a sheetmetal seat in which is formed an opening, and having its outer edge and the edge bordering upon the opening downturned, folding legs pivoted to the inner sides or". the front and back portions of the outer down-turned ecge to fold up between the inner and outer downturned edges and be housed thereby, a sheet metal member hinged to the seat and having its fOI'W rd edge portion down-turned to engage over thetront edge of the seat, a back hinged to the seat to fold over the seat and the member hinged thereto, and braces for holding the back and legs extended. e i
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
