TROLIQEY HEAD.
My invention relates to trolley heads and particularly to that type l znown a's alining heads. r r I i The object of my inventionis to provide a head in which the, portion which supports the trolley wheel or collector may swivel with respect to the pole asthe car moves out of alinement with the trolley wire, and also to provide means for tending to maintain the alinement of: the trolley wheel with respect to the pole.
A'furtherobject of contact between parts. i
In the drawing accompanying this spec.- ification:
Fig. 1:i s a side viewof my trolley head'in partialsection to show the swivelparts, and it is also shown asmountedupon the end of to provide a large area the relatively movable a pole.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention I employ a pole casting or member 1 which is arranged to be secured to the end rot the trolley pole or other support 2 by means of the bolt and washer 3. There are various types of connections between the members 1 and 2 which may be used, but the one shown will provide a practical connec tion.
Mounted upon the upper end of the pole casting 1 is a hollow member 4 having a side opening 5 and the top and bottom openings 6 and 7 respectively. The member 4: has a flat surface or top, although this surface may be curved if desired. The cross section of the member l is cylindrical. This permits the collector support 8 to be mounted upon the member 4t and rotate relative thereto. The collector support 8 comprises an inverted cup-shaped member 9, the inner surface of which its the outer surface of the member 4 and makes good contact therewith. This gives a large area of contact between the parts, which reduces the current per square inch which these surfaces must carry, and avoids the necessity of using a flexible copper connection between the members 1 and 8. Where the contact between members corresponding to the memi and 8 is small and the current carry-- iargy'c fi er unit area contact, it is found lector 16, and the upper ends of vment when the car is Application filcd August 23, 1927. The member 4 is mounted at such an angle with respect to the axis of the pole 2 that under normal operating conditions the ver 'tical axis of the members i and 14 will sub stantially at all times be in a vertical position. The upward pressure of the pole 2, which is brought about by means of a spring operated trolley base tends to maintain contact between the surfaces of the parts 4; and 9 when the current collector engages a trolley wire, and, therefore, it is not neces sary to draw the nut 19 very tight.
My improved head will permit the car to round a curve and the groove in the current collector maintain its alinement with the trol ley wire while rounding the curve and reduce friction and wear between the collector 16 and the trolley wire, and the spring 10 is biased to move the members 1 and Sinto and yieldingly maintain the members in aline moving on a straight track.
If the spring ends do not normally engage both edges of both hollow member openings 5 and 12, the device is still practical, but there willbe a small rotative movement of the members from oormah that ween tical central openings a pin the art will readily the car is moving in alinement with the trolley Wll8,.Wl11Cl1 will not be restrained by thesprmg and this movement Wlll. amount to the difference in the width of the openings 5 and 12. I
Themembers 4 and 9 inter-engage to pre:
vent lateral displacement and if the collecting device did not at times leave the wire jwhile moving relative thereto, it would not be necessary to use the axle bolt 14 as the upward pressure of the polewou'ld at all times maintain the, parts against ,longitu chnal dlsplacement wh le in use.
