Description

C. M. WEEKS LAMP SOCKET PULL CHAIN GUIDE Nov. 6,. I928.
Filed Feb. 10, 1928 Patented Nov. 6, 1923- UNITED STATES CHARLES MILLER.WEEKS, OF CHEVY CHASE, MARYLAND. v
mmr-soexnr PULL-CHAIN GUIDE.
Application filediehruary 10, 1928. Serial No 253,491.
This invention relates to'a guard or guide especially designed for use inconnection with electric lamp sockets of the pull chain type, the 7 primary object of the invention being to provide meansfor guarding the chain against cont-act with-the shade holder mounted on the lamp socket, or other portions of the socket, to prevent the free operation of the pull chain.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily positioned, the device being supplied with a clamping member to clamp the chain guard forming a part of the usual electric lamp socket, eliminating the necessity of usin securing screws or other complicated means for attaching the device.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. 7
Referring to the drawing: 7
Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrat ing a lamp socket equipped with a guard constructed in accordance with the inven tion.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the guard.
Referring to the drawing indetail, the reference character 5 designates the usual lamp socket which is supplied with a guard 6 guarding the opening through which the pull chain 7 operates.
The reference character 8 designates the usual shade supporting ring supplied with openings 9 to ventilate the lamp.
The guard, forming the essence of the present invention is indicated by the reference character 10 and includes a tubular body portion formed of a length of sheet metal, the tubular body portion being split throughout its length so that the pull chain with which the device is to be used, may be positioned within the body portion by forcing it through the slot, it being understood that the usual pull chain is supplied with a ball at the free end thereof oi' a diameter that would not pass through the tubular body portion. Theupper edges of thesplit body portion arecurved as at 11, so that the chain when being positioned in the body portion, will be guided to'its' proper position by contact with the curved edges.
Formed integral with the body portion is an extension 12 that is oiiset as at 13 so that when the device is positionedfthe opening of the body portion will lie in a'plane directly, below the chain guard 6, eliminating any possibility of the chain binding at the upper end of the body portion where it passes into the body portion.
The extension 12 is formed with a slot 14 provided with a central curved portion 15,
defining lateral gripping fingers to grip the guard 6 of the lamp-socket with which the device is to be used. To position the device it is only necessary to force the extension over the guard 6, whereupon the fingers of the extension will be spread apart and will clamp the guard 6 to hold the body portion 10 in position. 7
As shown by Figure 1' the body portion is extended through oneof the ventilating openings of the shade support and the pull chain is positioned therein with the result that the sections of which the "chain is formed will not catch on the edge of the opening through which it extends to prevent the pulling of the. chain to operate the switch controlled thereby.
I claim: 7
1. In combination with the pull chain and pull chain guard of a lamp socket, an elongated body portion, a clamping member at oneend of the body portion and adapted to clamp around the pull chain guard to removably connect the body portion to the lamp socket.
2. In combination with the pull chain and pull chain guard of a lamp socket, an extension chain guard including a tubular body portion a pair of spring fingers at one end of the body portion and said spring fingers adapted to clamp around the usual chain guard to removably secure the extension guard to the lamp socket. '2
3. In combination with the pull chain guard of a lamp socket, a depending extension guard embodying a split tubular member in which the chain of the socket is positioned, an extension at one end of the tubular member, and said extension adapted to be clamped to the pull chain guard of the lamp socket.
4. In combination with the pull chain guard of a lamp socket, and chain operating therethrough, a removable extension guard including a split body portion the upper corners formed by the split in the body portion being cut away to guide the pull chain into the body portion and means at the upper end of the body portion for clamping the body port-ion to the pull chain guard.
5. In combination with the pull chain and uard of a lamp socket, an auxiliary guard 15 including a body portion through which the pull chain extends, and means for removably securing the auziiliar pull chain guard to the lamp socket.
6. In combination with the pull chain and pull chain guard of an electric lamp socket, an extension guard including a body portion, an extension at the upper end of the body portion and olt'set with respect to the body portion, and means for removably eonmeeting the extension to the pull chain guard.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto atlixed my signature.
CHARLES MILLER lVEEKS.
