GASOLINE .STRAINER- Application filcdMay 9,"
My invention. relates to improvements in gasoline strainers and lint catchers and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of my invention'is to provide a gasoline strainer and lint catcher which is removably mounted on the feed pipe from a gasoline tank and which not only has means for straining all of the gasoline as it passes into the feed pipe but also has novel means for coveringa wide area adjacent to the feed pipe inlet, this area being serrated or jagged for providing prongs or small I5. projections which will catch lint floating in the gasoline as the gasoline surges back and forth past the device. This swinging is due to the fact that the tank is carried by an automobile or truck, which is moving over uneven ground. In this way the lint is prevented from cloggingthe feed pipe and also from entirely covering the strainer.
Moreover, it provides a positive means for catching and retaining floating lint, which cannot be done with the usual type of strainer. i
A further'object of .my invention is to provide a device of thetype described which is extremely simple in construction and which is durable and efficient for the purpose intended. a
Other objectsand advantages will appear in the following specification and'the novel featuresof my invention will be particular- 1y pointed; outin the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accom .panying drawing forming a part of this applicatiomin which -Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device showing it operatively applied to' a gasoline feed pipe; V g V Figure 2 isa top plan view of the device;
and Figure 3 is a side elevation partially in section showing a modified form of the device.
In carrying out my invention I provide a cup-shaped strainer 1, preferably made of a screen having a fine mesh and. I mount this strainer upon a disc'2 and secure it thereto by solder or any other suitable fastening means. The surface'of the disc 2 is provided with a number of openings 3 and these openings are formed by forcing asmall tool through the disc, this tool striking up a jagged edge which surrounds the "opening.
PATENT oF rcr.
NEHAIEM, OREGON.
AND LINT CATCHER.
1927; Serial No. 190,008.
It is the jagged edges around each of the openings which forms the means for catch- ;ing lint floating in the gasoline. tank 4;. It
is well known that the gasoline will surge back and forth in the tank as the automobile or truck travels over the uneven roadbed and this swishing of the fluid through the openings 3 causes the floating lint to become impinged upon the jagged edges 5 of the openings 3. This lint is prevented from gaining access to the feed pipe 6 and is also prevented from clogging up the screen, or strainer 1.
The means for securing the device to the feed pipe 6 comprises a sleeve 7 which is bellshaped or conical-shaped, as shown in Figure 1 and which has slots 8 extending partially throughout its length for giving the sleeve a springy action, which will cause itto frictionally engage with the feed pipe 6 and thus be securely held in place;
Thedisc 2 is preferably disposed aslight I distance above the bottom of the tank 4 so as to catch the lint congregating around the feed pipe. I- provide ears for the disc 2 and these cars permit the disc to be grasped as it is applied to the feed pipe 6 orfinoved therefrom.
From the foregoing description of the from. The disc 2 in reality acts as an aid for the screen 1 in that it catches agreat portion of thelint which would otherwise find its way to the; screen, or if the screen were not provided, to the entrance of the feed pipe 6. The disc therefore prevents the screen from becoming clogged, and thus In Figure 3 I show a modified formof the V it will be seen that the device assures a condevice which is identical to. the form already W described, with the exception that'th'esleeve 10 is threaded internally at 11 andis adapted to be screwed upon afeed pipe 12. This form of the device provides a more positive connection between the strainer and the feed pipe.- In all other respects the device func tions exactly the same as the form already described, and therefore needs no further comment. V
prising a screen for covering the inlet opening of a feed pipe, a perforated disc secured to said screen, the edges of the perfm'ations being jagged and a sleeve carried by said disc for securing the device to a gasoline feed pipe.
4. A device of the type described comprising a member having jagged portions for catching and retaining foreign substance floating in a gasoline tank, and a strainer 'arricd by said member.
