IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [69,016. dated October 19, 1875; application filed March 23, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE MOALEER, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding'Ghairs, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates substantially to folding chairs which have front and rear leg crossing each other, and the whole adapted to fold the one set of legs within the other.

In this improved chair each front leg is extended above the seat, and there it is secured to a frame making the back, which frame is extended below the seat, and there is attached to the front legs. v

In addition to the above, this invention con sists of an arm-rest for folding chairs, the construction ot'which is hereinafter tull y explained.

In the accompanying plate of drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section from front to rear of afolding chair embracing myimprovements. Fig. 2 is a similar sectional View to Fig. l, but with the chair closed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the chair as shown in Fig. 1.

In the drawings, A represents the back and B the front legs. These legs cross each other and the front legs are extended above the seat 0, and at their upper ends are secured to a frame, D, which makes the back. The backframe extends below the seat, and there is pivoted, as at a, to the back legs A, and fastened in any suitable manner to the front legs B. The legs B, between their two points of attachment to the back-frame D, as also the said back-frame, are both curved along their length, thereby giving greater stiffness and rigidity to the front legs B and to the back. The curvature of the front legs secures sides to the chair each side of the chair-seat. In lieu of pivoting the back frame to the rear legs, the front legs may be pivoted to the rear legs. F is an arm fixed to the front legs. This arm is for the rest of the arm of the occupant, and under the present invention it is constructed of the bracket 1), with the widened side 0 for a rest. These arms F, in the present instance, are applied to the upper portion of the front legs B, and are there fastened by screws. In lieu of fastening the arm F with screws, it may be hinged for being folded, and thus compactly located, when the chair itself is folded.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with the front and rear leg sections of a folding chair, of a back-frame attached to the front-leg section at or near its upper end, and extending to and connected with the lower portion of said front-leg section, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the back-legs A and back-frame D, extending to and connected with the lower portion of the front-leg section B, of the arm-rests F, C0nstructcd of brackets b attached to the portion of the frontleg sections which project above the seat, and the whole being otherwise constructed substantially as and for the object specified;
