EMERY-WHEEL DRESSER.
Application filed February 9, 1925. Serial No. 7,804. i
This invention relates to the construction of rotatable dressing cutters for emery wheels and its object to produce bearings for a de-. vice of this character which will eliminate the objectionable chattertso commonly experienced when dressing tools are in use which chatter results in high spots and ridges on the surfaces being dressed.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is an end elevation of a dressing cutter and a section of the holder therefor. 2 is a longitudinal section of the cutter and of the support. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the cutter ands section of the support showing a slight modification of the shaft on which the cutter is mounted. Fig. 4 is a section and Fig. 5 is an elevation of a bushing. Fig. 6 is an elevation and a section of a spring washer on the line w-:c.
parts throughout the several views.
1 have found that when the rotary cutters of dressing tools for grinding wheels are not positively prevented from moving laterally relative to the axes of the cutters that chat,- tering occurs which results in high spots and ridges being formed on the surfaces being dressed, and that this may occur even when the slackness'of the bearings and of the cutter shaft in the holder is no more than a few thousandths of an inch. It is for this reason that the head 1 of the holder is formed with tapering holes 2 and 3, andtrat the head 41- of the shaft 5 is turned to fit the hole 2,
while a tapering and splitbushing 6 fits the der pressure. The bearing rings 10 are Similar reference characters refer to like The rm gs, the
pressed into the barrel 11 on which the starshaped cutters 12 are held by the nut 13, the latter being held in place by thewell known lock washer 14 having a finger 15. I prefer to use the sleeve 8' be *ause it renders assembly and replacement more convenient.
Thin washers 17- lit the rings 9 and prevent the entrance of dust to the spaces between the balls 18. Other washers 19 are slidable on 'the shaft and contact with the bearing rings 9 and are pushed toward each other by the spring washers 20 which lie against the inner sides of the ends 21 of the holder and are provided with wings 22 that press against the washers 19. These washers 19 also assist in preventing the entrance of dust; These spring washers are tempered to have sufficient initial stiffness, the central holes being so large that the washer will not Contact with the tapering head 4c of the bolt or with the ta pering bushing 65, as shown in Fig. 3, or the holes 23 may be smaller so that when the head 4 and bushing 6 are forced toward each other thewashers 20 will be carried with them and the pressure on the bearing rings 9 be thereby increased. In either case, there is no looseness at the ball bearings of the rotary cutter, this being entirely eliminated by the rigid shaft andthe constant pressure of the spring washers.
The details and proportions ofthis cutter mounting may all be changed by those skilled in'the art without departing from the spirit (ill so f
of my invention as set forth'in the following claim.
1 claim In an eniery wheel dresser, the combination of a holder having side members, a shaft mounted in saidside members, a cutter mounted on the shaft, ball bearings between the shaft and cutter. washers on the shaft contacting with the inner ring members of said bearings, and cup-shaped resilient metal. washers between said washers and the side members of the holder to automatically adjust said ball bearings.
