The present invention relates'to improvements in cribs, and-has for its object to pro vide a crib having a top with improved means for facilitating its movement to and from a closing positionupon the crib,
Aiiuither object of the invention is to provide means for 'pivotally supporting a top upon acribforza swinging movement back and forth between a position overlying the crib and an; upright-position at one side thereof in such a manner as to avoid a skewing a-ction' and a consequent lbindin action of the top upon any part of the cri body whenmoving from one position to another, regardless of the point at which the top is grasped by the operator. Another object. of the invention is to provide a movable topfor a cribwith asimp'le and economical form of pivotal connection I therefor, such as a-bail, the ends of which-are pivotally connected withthetop andtheintermediatej portion extending the full length of the crib-and pivotally connected with one of its side walls in any suitable manner. Another object of the invention is i to utilize certain parts of one ofthe side walls of a crib to cooperate with said connection in eil'ectinga reduction ofthelnumberofparts necessary to fcompletejthesame- T these and other; end-s the invention resides in 1 certain improvements and eombinations of parts all as will-be hereinafter more fully described; the novel features being pointed out intheclaimsatthe end- .of the specificatiorn c the drawi gs} Figure 1 is a side elevation of a crib embodying the invention;

I
one position to another tobemadeas sim ale and as easyas possible and that it'be as from any binding action or tendency to or spring out of normal position by reason of its being operated from one endonly when adyustedtoits diiferentp'ositions. Inthe present embodiment of the invention, we provide a crib body which may-be of any desired type preferablyconstructed' asindicated in the drawings and embody: ingthe side Walls 10 and 11, the end walls I Q a-nd a top' or closure 13, together with the wheels and a suitable bottom not shown. The side walls are preferably of the screened frame type but. may be otherwise constructed as desi red, n or one or more ofith'e walls may include the screening while the others may be of solid or. non-screened construction, The side wall 11 preferably comprisestop and bottom rails orframe members 15 and 16, together with the end- I and intermediate :uprightframe members 1-7 and-18. respectively, all suitably connectedto ,form frame units for the reception of the 'screening 19 which may be of any approved kind, such as wire mesh or the like. Thescreening is secured upon" the side frames and end frames aswell, preferably by suitable cleats or strips 20 which are connected to the frame lat -the desired points by screwsor nails 21: as indicated in-Figure The top maybe of any desired construction" preferably including screening similar to that shown at the sides of the crib. Y
The pivotal connection between the top and the body of the-crib preferably cemprises a single member extending fromone end ofthe crib to the; other in the form of a bail, made by'providi'nga rod 22 witlr right angle portions-23- and forming eyes or loops 24Tthereon for the reception of the screws 25 forming-means for pivotally connecting the'bail with the to 1 3- at; points intermediate its longitudinal edges as shown in Figure, 3. The longitudinal] portion of the bail is extended p-arallelwiththe sides of the crib and'maybe' pivotally connected with one of the sides by any desired form of pivotal connection, that shown in the drawing including the notched bearings or grooves 27. formed in the upright frame members 17 economy is'effected by employing the screens and the securing cleats therefor to'maintain the rod within the grooves or notches as indicated in Figure 5.: although it will be understood that theinvention is not limited to this or any particular method of'pivotally connecting-the rod with'the side wall of the crib. One feature'of the invention is the mountingof the longitudinally extending portion of the rod so as to have a bearing throughout its. length upon the screen, or
otherside wall surface whereby it is held in the desired position and against undue flexing during the movement of the top from one position'of'adjustment to another. In
. moving the top from ithe closing'position shown in FigureiB to the open position shown inlFigure 2 it may be grasped by the operator at either end or at any polnt desired and bodily pushed outwardly and at the same time swung downwardly to the position shown in Figure 2, during which time 'the angularly disposed portions 23 of the rod swing upon the pivots 25 while the rod is swinging about the aids of its bearings in the frame. The particular advantage of making a continuous; pivotal support for the top and extending it along the side wall of the crib from one end to the other thereof,
as, distinguished from separate pivotal con-- nections-at each endofthe crib, is to avoid a binding action between the top and the crib body. It has been found that withthe' use of such separate connections, terminating at the ends of the crib that a skewing action of the top, occurs when operating it "from one end only. In our" improved construction this'objection is entirely avoided because the liftingforce applied at or near one end of the top is transferred by the rod throughto the opposite end, thus causing even distribution of the operating forces, regardless of the point atwhich theto'p may be grasped by theoperator when shifting it from one position to another. This arrangement affords a decidedadvantage in avoiding a skewing action of the top anda consequent binding action between the angular portions 28 of the rod and the'crib body when adjusting the top upon the latter. 7
In order to securely hold the top in an upright position at the side of the crib a latch 27 on the top as shown in Figure 26 is provided whichi's pivoted upon the side wall 11 and adapted to engagea stud InFigure 7 we have shown a slight modification of thepivotal connection for the top, indicated at 28, wherein the-rod' or bail' is cut at the center to form separate end portions, each of which may be independently inserted in the notches of the side frame members 17 and 18, with their ends abutting or spaced slightly apart as desired, or with said ends disposed in separate notches cut in the frame member '18 if preferred. This arrangement is'also adapted to prevent skewing of the top and facilitates its application to the crib body by the'readiness'with which the separate sections of the rod may be inserted and removed when desired. v
WVe claim as our invention: I 1. In combination, a crib body, a top therefor, and a member, extendingsubstantially the length of the'body along one of its side walls and pivotally secured in notches formed therein and having angularly disposed ends connected with the top, said member permitting the top to move bodily from a position overlying the crib outwardly and downwardly to a'verti'cal' position at the side thereof. Y 7
2. 'A crib body having sidewalls each of which comprises end frame members and an intermediate frame member spaced from the end frame members, a top overlying the upperedges of said side walls, and'a rod extending the full length of'the body below the top thereof and pivotally secured to all of said frame members, thereby affording narrow bearings for the rod at'the ends of theside walls and'at points intermediate said ends to hold the rod rigidly, said rod' being provided with angularly disposed exteriorly arranged end portions projecting exteriorly of the end walls ofthe crib and pivotally connected with said top at oppositev ends thereof permitting it to move from a position overlying the crib outwardly and downwardly to a vertical position at one side thereof.
3. crib body having a top, one side of the crib including a frame andlscreening thereon with cleats for securingthe screening to said frame, and a rod extending substantially the length, of the body and pivotally disposed upon one of its, sides between said frame and said cleats and having'end portions connected with said top and permitting itto movefrom a position overlying the crib outwardly and downwardly at the side thereof. 5 I
4:. -A crib body having atop, one sidewall of the crib including a notched frame and screening thereon with cleats spanning the notch for securing the screening to the frame, and means at each end of the crib having a portion pivotally connected-with the top intermediate its longitudinal edges and provided with an angular portion ex-' tending longitudinally of the crib and pivotally disposed in the notches of said side wall and held'therein by the cleats to permit the top to move from a position overlying the crib outwardly and downwardly to a vertical position at the side thereof.
5. A crib body including side walls and a cover overlying the upper edges of said, side walls, one of the aforesaid elements com-' prising end frame members and an intermediate frame member spaced from the end frame members, a rod extending the full length thereof and pivotally secured to of the end wallsyofthe crib and pivotally connected with said other element at opposite ends thereof, permittinr the cover to move from a position overlying the crib outwardly and downwardly to a vertical position one side thereof.
