The presentrinvention relates to printing presses and more particularly to pile elevating mechanism therefor. It comprehends manual means to raise the pile constructed and arranged to permit the operation of automatic pile elevating mechanism without disturbing said manual means. To this end the vmanual meansincludes a one-way transmitting device such as a one-way clutch. The invention also includes two manual devices for elevating the pile, one adapted to raise the pile of sheets at a greater speed than the other and either means being operable wit-hout actuating the other. rThe invention also includes improved automatic means for elevating the pile controlled by the height kof the pile. Referring to the drawings the form of the invention illustrated includes a pile supporting table 10 supported by brackets 11 verticallyslidable on theiways 12 of the side frames `13 of the press, vThe present invention comprehends meansfor raising and lowering the pile table 10.V vAs lshown the side frames 13 at the top thereof carry a transverse shaft 14:` and a sprocket 15 `is secured to this shaft adjacent the side frames 13. A chain 16 at its lower end `is secured. to each of the brackets 11`and passes. up over the sprocket wheels 15 and hence depends `at the other side of the 'connected by the gears 19 and 20. In this manner the shaft 18 is connected to the table 10 so that rotation of said shaft effectsy ver tical movement of the table.
The shaft 18 projects laterally from. the side frame 13 and carries an armv 21 loosely7 mounted thereon and adjacent thereto a ratchet wheel 22, the latter being secured to the shaft for rotation therewith in anysuitable manner as by means of a key 23. Referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that there is asecond arm 24 which is adapted to be oscill ated by a cam 25, the arm` 24 carrying a roller 291a in contact with the periphery of t c cam for this purpose. The free ends of the arms 24C and 21 are connected by a link 26 so that the oscillation of arm 24 is transmitted to arm 21, the cam moving the parts in one direction, and spring 21u operative on arm 21 moving them in. the other direction. The oscillation of arm 21 is transmitted to ratchet wheel 22 by means of the pawl 27 pivoted at 28 on said arm. Retrograde movement of the ratchet wheel is prevented by a pawl 29 pivoted at 30. A plate 31 is also pivoted on the pin 30 andis provided with. an aperture 32 linto which .projectsa pin 33 carried by the pawl 29. The aperture 32 is of greater diameter than the pin 33 to permit the pawl to ratchet over the ratchet teeth. However the two p arts are associated so that wh enthe plate is moved. slightly in a clockwise direction on its pivot it will raise the locking pawl 29 out of engagement with the ratchet wheel. A latch 311 is adapted to engage with the tail 35 of the plate to hold `it in` raised position, a spring 36 being provided tending to pull the latch member' 341: into engagement with said tail 35. As clearly shown in Fig. 1 the plate 31 projects along under a pin 37 carried by the pawl 27 so that when "the plate is raised it strikes the pin 37 and disengages the pawl 27 from the ratchet wheel. In this manner both pawls may be Arendered inoperative when desired. i
From the foregoing it is apparent that the rotation of cam 25 `rotates the ratchet wheel 22 step by step, thus elevating the pile supporting table. Means is provided however for controlling this elevating mechanism in accordance with the height of the pile. For this purpose a shaft 33 is rotatably carried on the inside of the frame 13 and has an arm extending out over the top of the pile, as shown in liig.` 2, .this arm being secured to the shaft in any suitable manner by the clamp being' .operative on a link 43 the upper end ot which is pivoted to a lever 44, the latter being; carried by the side frame. 13. Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:

Mechanism of the character described including in combination a vertically movable pile supporting table, a rotatable shaft operatively connected with said table to raise and lower the same, a wheel secured to said shaft, automatically actuated means operable on said wheel to turn the shaft in table raising direction and manually operable means including a one-way motion transmitting means associated with said shaft.

In a sheet feeding mechanism, in combination, a pilesupporting table, a shaft adapted, when turned, to raise or lower said table, means controlled by the elevationof the top of the pile to turn said shaft to maintain the `top of thev pile substantially at a predeter-` mined elevation, a worm wheel, acne-way or over-running clutch to tran smit mot-ion from the' wheel to the sha-ft only in the direction to raise the table and permit operation of said automatic means without rotating said wheel, a worm meshing with said worm wheel, and manually operable means to turn said worm, the pitch of the worm and worm wheel being such that the table is normally held against lowering and, when the worm is set spinning in the direction to lower the table, the lowering will continue automatically at a substantially uniform rate because of the weight of the table.v

Mechanism of the character described including, in combination, a rotatable shaft, a ratchet wheel secured to said shaft, a vertically movable pile supporting` table, means onone side of the wheel connecting' the shaft and table so that the turning of the shaft raises or lowers the table, manually operable means on the other side of the ratchet wheel to turn said shaft in the raising direction, said manual means: including a worm and `worm wheel and a one-way clutch, and an automatically actuated pawl adapted to turn said leo ratchet wheel step by step, the movement of said pawl being controlled by the height of the pile.
16. n a sheet feeding mechanism, in combination, a pile supporting table, a shaft adapted, when turned, to raise or lower said table7 means controlled by the elevation of the vtop` of the pile tot-urn said shaft to maintain `the top of the pile substantially at a predetermined elevation, aworin wheel, a one-way or over-running clutch to transmit motion 'from the Wheel to the shaft'only in the direction to raise the table and permit operation of said automatic. means without rotating said wheel, a worm meshing with said worm wheel, the pitch of thel Worm and worm wheel being 4such that the table is normally held against lowering and, when the worm is set spinning vin the direction to lowerv the table, the lowering will continue automatically at a uniform rate because of the weight of ther table, said automatic elevating means including a ratchet wheel, and said ratchet wheel, worm wheel and clutch all being mounted on sai-d shaft.

Mechanism of the character described including in combination a vertically movable pile supporting table, means to raise said table including a rotatable cam, an arm actu- .ated by said cam, a ratchet wheel, a pawl op erative on said wheel and actuated by said arm, means controlled by the height of the pile togovern the engagement of said arm 4a link connecting said arms, a pawl on said second arm operative on said wheel to actuate the latter and means controlled by the height of the pile to govern the action of said pawl.

In a sheet feeding mechanism, in combination, a pile supporting table, a shaft adapted, when turned, to raise or lower said ',table, means controlled by the elevation of the top of the pile to turn said shaft to maintain 'the top ofthe pile substantially at a predetermined elevation, a worm wheel, a one-way or 'overaunning clutch to transmit motion from the wheel to the shaft only in the direction to raise the table and permit operation of said automatic means without rotating said wheel, a worm meshing with said worin Wheel, and manually operable means to turn said worin, said automatic means including a ratchet -wheel, and said ratchet wheel, worin wheel and clutch all being mounted on said shaft. n testimony whereof I hereunto affix my VILLIAM M.
