To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, HENRY STANLEY, of St. Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Handle for Boring-Tools, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figures 1 and 2, respectively, show a vertical central section and a front View of a bit-stock with spirit-level attached; and Figs. 3 and 4 represent a side view and vertical transverse section on the line 0 c, Fig. 3, of an auger-handle with spirit-level.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to improve the handles of boring and other tools in such a manner that they may be handled under any required fixed angle, and the work be performedmore accurately and without requiring special skill.
My invention consists of the combination of the tool-handle or bit-stock with a graduated angular or circular spirit-level set into a protecting recess of the handles.
In the drawing, A represents the bit stock or handle of a boring or other tool which is desired to be used under certain defined angles. Handle A is recessed in suitable manner and supplied either with separate horizontal and vertical spirit-levels, or, preferably,
with one spirit-level, B, of circular shape, which combines the advantages of the two former. The spirit-level B is made somewhat larger in size than the quadrant of the circle or sectionof the handle part to which it is applied, it being set into a vertical recess of the handle, cemented or otherwise fastened and suitably protected therein.
The spirit-level B is graduated, and allows the boring in horizontal or vertical direction, or any intermediate angle, -by retaining the bubble on the required point of the tube during work. The level B is inserted into the most convenient part of the handle, so that it can be easily seen during the Work, and the tool be directed thereby. It forms a very convenient and useful addition to the handles, and enables unskilled workmen to do the work in a quick and accurate manner.
Having thus described my invention, Iclairn as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with handle A, of the arc-shaped spirit-level B, having a graduated scale thereon, and located within acorrespondinglycurved part of the handle, as and for the purpose specified.
