This invention has for its object a power actuating mechanism or mechanical movement, particularly applicable for pressing machines, such as garment and laundry pressing machines, and more particularly an especially simple, economical and highly efficient mechanism which can be readily adjusted to regulate the pressure of the machine, and also which can be operated to give a slapping operation to the article being pressed.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters represent corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pressing machine embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in section of the actuating mechanism.
1 designates the head of a conventional pressing machine, which is movable toward and from a buck 2 suitably carried by a frame 3, the head 1 being carried by a po-rtion of the mechanism for actuating it as by a. lever 4 pivoted between its ends at 5 to the frame. The machine may be of any suitable form, size and construction.
The head 1 is actuated by power means through the lever 4 and the power means includes a motor having a reciprocating part and motion transmitting connections between the motor or the reciprocating part thereof 85 and the lever 4, these connections including a toggle.
The motor here illustrated is a cylinder 6 having a piston 7 reciprocably movable therein and having its rod 8 connected to a lever 9 pivoted at 10 to the frame, the lever having upwardly extending arm' 11 rigid therewith, which is pivoted at 12 to a link 13' connected to the rear arm of the lever 4. The link 13 and the arm 11 constitute a tog- 46 glef A suitablecounter-weight14 and counter-springs 15a' are also connected to the rear arm of the lever 4.
The piston 7 is actuated in the cylinder by any suitable mot-ive fluid preferably compressed air. The piston here illustrated is formed'with a stem projecting in advance thereof. the stem telescoping into the piston rod and having a valve -head at its outer end for coactincwith the intakeport of the cylinder. stroke, this head closes or partly closes one of the inlet ports until the piston has traveled some distance on its power stroke. The head also closes the port during the upstroke of the piston after the piston has started on its up stroke and in so closing the port retards t-he exhaust of air so that the piston working in the cylinder acts as a dash pot during the opening of the press. This feature forms n0 part of the invention.
The machine includes operator controlled mechanism for adjusting the pressure, this mechanism including means for shifting the motor. The mechanism here shown comprises a lever 16, pivoted at 17 to the frame, and motion transmitting connections between the lever and the cylinder 6 to shift the cylinder bodily, this motion transmitting mechamsm including a toggle of which the cylinder is one of the links. The other link of the toggle is designated 18 and it is pivoted at 19 to the head of the cylinder and mounted at its other end on a rock shaft 20 j ournalled in the machine frame. The connections between the lever 16 and this toggle comprises a link 21 pivoted at one end at 22 to an angular arm 23 on the lever 16 and its other end at 24 to one arm of a lever 25 pivoted at 26 to the frame, the other arm of which said lever is connected by a. link 27 t-o an arm 28 mounted on the shaft 2O on which the lock arm or toggle ring 18 is mounted. f
The link 27 comprises a motor having a reciprocating part as a cylinder 30 and piston 31 movable therein, this motor being operable to apply final pressure, and also toalternately release and apply pressure and effect the slapping action on-the head and the buck 1. The adjusting lever 16 is heldin its adjusted position by any suitable detent means here shown as a pawl 32 mounted on said lever, and coacting with a rack 33 onthe frame, the pawl being operable through a link 34 by a grip handle 35 on the lever 16.
The operation of the motors is controlled 100 by manual or .operator operated means. This manual means may be of any suitable form, size and construction, and as the motors here shown are fluid operated, the manual means are control valves. The valves for controlling 105 the flow of motive fluid as air to and from the cylinder 6 includes a casing 36 suitably carried bv the frame 3 of the pressing machine, and having a. normally closed intake valve 37 therein which is combined with a 110 normally open exhaust valve 38, the valves belng connected by a stem 39 so that they act casing 36 on the intake side ofthe valve 37 communicates with a suitable source of supply of compressed air through a pipe 44, which may have a suitable manually operable cut-0E valve 45 therein.
The combined valves 37 and 38 areo e-rated by manual means as a slide or pushy utton 46 suitably carried by the frame and the motion thereof is transferred to the combined valves through levers 47 and 48, the
latter coacting with the stem 49 on the ex-` haust valve 38. lObviously when the button 46 is depressed the exhaust valve 38 will be closed. and the intake valve 37 opened so that air is free to flow through the casing from the pipe 44, past the intake valve 37,
through the port 41, pipe 41, to the cylinder 6 and thus actuate the piston 7 in the cylinder.
The intake valve 37 and the exhaust 38 are held in their ,operated positionan indefinite time depending upon the will of the operator, by any. suitable means here shown as a fluid operated motor as a diaphragm 50 located in the diaphragm chamber 51 carried by the valve casing 36, and a movable plunger 52 arranged to be actuated by the diaphragm and acting on the lever 48 previously referred to, the pressure side of the diaphragm chamber bein connected by apipe 53 to a port 54 on the cylinder 6, and arranged to be uncovered fby the piston 7, as the piston proaches the end of its power stroke. viously as the piston 7 uncovers the port 54, the preure therein will be transferred through the part 5 3 to the diaphragm chamber 51 to ,actuate the diaphragm therein, which through the plunger 52 and lever 48 acts on the stem 48 of the exhaust valve 38 to hold the exhaust valve closed, and the'intake valve 37 open.
The means for controllin the operation of the piston 31 is carried by t e adjusting lever 16, and is similar in construction to the valve mechanism .just described. It includes al valve casing 55 carried by said lever 16, and having a normally closed intake valve 56 and a normally open exhaust valve 57, which are connected by V'a stem 58 so that they act as a unit, the valves 56 and 57 being held in their normal position by a spring 59,'and being operable by a lever 60 pivoted at 61 to the casing 55, and acting upon the stem 62 of the exhaust valve 57. The intake side of the 'casing 55 is connected by a pipe 63 to the pipe 41a previously described. Obviously owing to the connection of this feed pipe 63 for the cylinder 30, to the pipe 415, the piston 7 must be actuated in advance of the piston 3l. Upon the operation of the lever 60, the toggle consisting of the'arm 18 and the cylinder 6 is held in more or less straightened position to apply final or heaviest pressure, as long as the operator holds the handle 60 in its operated position, However, to effect a slapping action, the lever 60 is momentarily actuated several times in succession or what mechanics call tickled so that the piston 31 is reciprocated comparatively rapidly and an effect produced similar to the slapping action by a tailor when pressin clothes when he slaps the clothes with a add e.
To release e pressure in the cylinder 6 and thereby ermit the press to entirely open under the inuence of the counters ring and counterweight, means is provide for exhausting the air in the diaphragmv chamber 51, this means being here shown as a normally closed exhaust valve 65 in'the casing 66 arranged adjacent to the button 46 in order to be operated by the .same hand operating the button 46, and a lever 67 arranged to operate oli the stem 68 of the exhaust valve in order to open said exhaust valve against Ythe action of its s ring 69. The casing is connected to the diaphragm chamber 51 through a ipe 70 which is connected to the pipe 53. O viously upon the operation of the handle 67 to open the valve 65, the air will be. exhausted from the pressure side of the diaphragm chamber, permitting the spring 40 to close the main intake valve 57 and open the exhaust valve 48 so that air willv exhaust from the cylinder 6 back through the pipe 42, valve casing 36, through the exhaust passage 43.
In operation after thework is on the buck 2, the operator first operates the button 46 to cause the actuation of the piston 7, so as to bring the head 1 nearly down. onto the buck 2, but without any ressure. Either 'before or after this operat1on, the pressure may be adjusted by depressing the lever 16, and thus straightening more or less the toggle consisting of the link 18 and cylinder 6, the lever 16 being held in its adjusted position by the pawl 32 engaged with the rack 33. The operator then actuates the handle 60 to permit air to enter into the cylinder 30 forming part of the connection between the adjusting lever and the toggle consisting of the link 18 and cylinder 6. vThe movement of the piston 31 in the cylinder 30 tends to straighten the toggle consisting of the link 18 and cylinder 6, and thus appley heavy pressure. The heavy preure can alternately applied and rcleased to eil'ect the slapping action by tickling the'leyer 60.

A pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, operator controlled power means for actuating the movable element including a motor and a toggle, the motor comprising a part which constitutes one of the links of the toggle, and operator controlled means foradjusting the initial position of the toggle and thereby adjusting the pressure between the pressing elements.
5.' A pressing machine comprising cooperating elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element comprising a cylinder, a piston movable in the cylinder and a toggle, the cylinder forming oneof the links of the toggle and operator controlled means for adjusting the initial position of the toggle and thereby adjusting the pressure between said elements.
6. A pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, power means including a motor for yactuating the movable element, and means for adjusting the pressure comprising a manually operable lever for shifting the position of the power means.
7. A pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element including a toggle, means for adjusting the initial position of the toggle including a manually operable lever and connections between the lever, and the toggle.
8. A pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, oneoi which is movable toward and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element including a toggle connected to the movable element. a second toggle connected to the tirSt toggle, and means for adjusting the initial position of the second toggle and thereby adjusting the pressure between said elements,tlie adjusting means including a lever and connections between the lever and the second toggle, and means for holding the lever in its adjusted position.

A pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one of which is"movable toward and from the other, operator controlled means for actuating the movable element including a motor and a toggle, a part of the motor constituting one of the links of the toggle, and an operator operated leverv connected to the toggle for adjusting the initial position thereof and thereby adjusting the pressure between the pressing elements, and means for holding lever in its adjusted position.
10.v A pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one of w ich is movable toward and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element comprising a cylinder, a piston movable in the cylinder, and a toggle, the cylinder forming one ot' the links of the toggle, and a manually opperable lever connected to the toggle to shift the same and thereby adjust the pressure between said elements, and means. for holding the lever in its adjusted position.

A pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, power means including a motor for actuating the movable element including a toggle, manual means for adjusting the initial positionof the toggle, a second motor for actuating the toggle, the second motor comprising a part of the adjusting means and manual means for controlling the operation of the motors.

A pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, power means for actuating the movable element including a motor having a reciprocating part, and a toggle, the motor constituting one of the links of the toggle, a manually operable lever, connections between the lever and the toggle, and means for holding the lever in its operated position, said connections comprising a motor including a reciprocating part, and manual means for controlling the operations of the motors.

A pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the otherf power means for actuating the movable element including a motor having a reciprocating part, and a toggle, the motor constituting one of the links of the toggle, a manually operable lever, connections between the lever and the toggle, and means for holding the lever in its operated position, said connections comprising a motor including a reciprocating part, and manual means for controlling the operations of the motors, one of said manual means being carried by the lever.
