IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-WRENCHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,852, dated October 19, 1875 application filed August 25, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WM. K. STEVENS, of Mansfield, Ohio, have invented neu7 and useful Improvements in Pipe-l/Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to an improved pipe- Wrench provided with an adjustable toothed slide, which serves Vto regulate the grasp of the jaw or hook, and a removable double bit ing-edge, all as more particularly described hereinafter.

The object of the invention is to provide a tool for manipulating pipe, and analogous purposes.

Figure l is a side elevation of a device embodying the elements of the invention.- Fig. 2 is an edge view of the slide. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the biting-edge.

A in the accompanying drawing represents the shaft or handle of the device,.provided at one end on its under side with the toothed sur` face a, adjacent the end of which is fixed the threaded standard b, which passes through the slotd at the rear of the movable slide B, which is'secured on the standard by the set-screw e. Theopposite end of therslide is provided on its ,upper side with the toothed surfacef, of such character as to engage the surface a., and having in its midst, and extending through the slide, the sloth, wherein is pivoted the lower end of the jaw or hook D, which extends through the slot i, situated in the surface a, and extending` through t-he handle A. The jaw or hook D extends beyond the end of the handle A, its biting-edge projecting downward toward the end of the handle, on the upper surface of which is placed the plate E, secured to the handle by a setscrew, l, or other movable means, and on its extreme edge provided with the groove m, forming the double biting-edge n. This plate may, if desired, be of hard metal, and-can readily be removed for grinding or other pur? poses. The handle is provided with a scale, and the slide with an index-line, so that the capacity of the device may readily be regulated.

It is obvious tha-tas the slide is moved toward the plate E the gripe of the device is increased, a contrary movement red ucin git; also, that to set the device, it is only necessary to move the slide to the desired point on the scale, and secure it by the setscrew, the surfaces ct and f preventing the slide slipping.

vWhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The handle A, provided with the toothed surfacef, bitingplate E, and stud b, in combination with the pivoted adjustable hook D, slotted toothed plate B, and clamp -screw e, substantially as shown and described.

In testimony that I claim the foregoing inlproveinents in pipe wrenches, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th day of August, 1875.
