JACOB B. WHITE, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
BEDSPRING BRACE.
Application filed May 6,
This invention is specifically directed to improvements in bed springs of the type embodying a rigid lower frame and a flexible upperframe, and wherein the frames are re- 5 siliently separated by a multiplicity of coiled springs arranged between the frames, and it is an object of the present invention to pro- I vide an improved brace construction between the frames of a bed spring of th s type for l the purpose of stabilizing relative movement between said frames so as to limit such movement to travel in substantially vertical planes to preclude undue lateral sway thereof and, also, to preserve at all times the proper shape and appearance of the bed spring.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts hereinafter to be fully described and pointed out in theappended claims. I
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1, t
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the lower rigid frame of the bed spring. This frame is composed, as usual, of a plurality of angle bars rigidly connected to constitute a rectangular plane, and connected with the angle bars are a plurality of longitudinally spaced transconnected at their ends to the frame 1. This frame constitutes a base for the reception of the lower end of a plurality of spirally coiled their convolutions of largest diameter are arranged in the upper ends thereof and their convolutions of smallest diameter disposed to rest upon and are secured to the frame 1 and its cross members 2. The upper end of the springs 3 may also be connected by means of a plurality of short, horizontally extending.
tending link 11.
is pivoted to the latter as at 17.
springs 3, whichsprings are arranged so that 1926. Serial No. 107,233.
In order to stabilize the operation of the bed springs and to confine the upper flexible frame for movement in a vertical plane, the present invention contemplates the provision of an improved base construction consisting of a pair of cooperating units connected preferably with the central portion of the longitudinally extending angle bars of the frame 1 and arranged generally transverselyof the frame. Each of these braces is formed to comprise an angle bracket 6, arrangedtransversely of the frame 1 and having its outer end recessed as at 7 so that the upper horizontal leg of the bracket may be riveted or otherwise secured to the frame 1'. The bracket 6 of each brace extends inwardly a relatively limited distance and has pivotally secured to the vertical legs thereof as at 8 at the extreme inner end of said bracket a check link 9, which extends diagonally upwardly and has its upper or outer end pivotally secured as at 10 to an upwardly and inwardly ex- The upper end of this link is pivoted as at 12 to a diagonally extending arm 13, which has its upper end hooked as at 14 for engagement with the border wire 5.
The arm 18 extends inwardly and downwardly with respect to the spring and has its lower end pivoted as at 15 to the floating link 35 16 which, in turn, intersects the link 9 and he extreme lower end of the link 16 is provided with a laterally projecting stud 18, which is received within an elongated slot 19 provided I in the fixed bracket 6; versely extending cross members 2, rigidly From the foregoing it will be seen that a brace construction is provided wherein the upper or hook shaped end lt of the arm 13 is limited for travel in a substantially vertical line irrespectively of the relative spacing which exists between the upper and lower frame of the spring. This construction, therefore, serves to prevent lateral swaying of the spring assembly at and limits the travel of said assembly to vertical planes. The slot 19 serves to definitely limit the upward movement of the brace so as to relieve the spring assembly of strain when the bed spring is lifted bodily by forces applied to the border wire 5. Again, the hook it serves to securely confine the border wire to a determined position and prevents the latter from twisting or bending under the influence of the springs 3 and 41 or to other pressures which are directed outwardly and laterally.- The brace is of simple and positive construction, does] not interfere with the normal resiliency of the bed spring and eifectively'serves to protect the latter when unusual forces are applied thereto. I
What is claimed is: 1. In a bed spring, a rigid lower frame, a
spaced upper frame, springs interposed be tween said frames for resiliently spacing the latter, a transversely extending bracket rigidly connected with said lower frame, a
.pair of cross links, pivoted to each other at a point intermediate the length, one of said links having the lower end thereof connected by a fixed plvot wlth said bracket, the other of said links having its lowerend connected part of the length of said arm and the upper end of the link having the fixed pivot connection with said bracket.
2. In a bed spring,in combination, a base frame, and a resiliently spaced upper frame having a border element, an arm having the upper end thereof connected with said border element and extending downwardly and inwardly therefrom, a check link having the lower end thereof pivotally connected with said lower frame and arranged to extend parallel to said arm, a floating link plvotally connected with the intermediate boint of said check link and having the upper end thereof pivotally connected with the inner end of said arm, the lower ends of said float- Jing link having a pin andslot connection with said lower frame, and a short link sec tion connected pivotally with the upper end of said check link and'with an intermediate part of said arm.
3.1m a bed spring, in combination, a rigid base frame, an upper frame resiliently spaced and pivotally connected therewith, the upperend of said second link being pivotally connected with the lower end of said arm and having its lower end provided witha pin and slot connection with said bracket, and a third link having the lower end thereof pivotally connected with the upper end of said checklink and its upper end pivotally connected with a point intermediate of the length of said arm.
4. In a bed spring, in combination, a rigid base frame, an upperframe resiliently spaced from said base frame. and including a flexible border element, a brace arm arranged'within the con-fines of said spring and having the upper end thereof connected with said border element, a rigid transverse support on said base frame, and a pair of crossed links pivoted to each other approximately midway of their length, one of said links having its lower end pivotally connected to the inner end of said transverse support, the other of said links having its lower end connected with said support by a pin and slot connection, 'and'its upper end to the end of said brace arm, and a third link pivot-ally connected to the brace arm and to the upper end of-the f'mst named cross link, the third 1 link being arranged in parallel relationship with respect to the link having the pin and slot connection. v
