- HAND SIGNAL LIGHT.-
Application filed ctober24, 1925. smrnoreeeao.
This invention relates generally to hand operated signal lamp It is the objectof this invention to provide asignal lamp which may be held on theoperators hand such as by attachment to one of his fingers, palm, or otherwise, and which may be operated by the movements of the-hand or fingers. specific embodiment of the invention disclosed and described herein, has special application to'manual signaling by automobile operators. It will become obvious that the lamp has many other applications and uses.
for various signaling and illuminating purposes, such as by ushers in theaters and the like.
In the drawings-- V I Figure 1 shows a front view of the preferred embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 2 shows anend view of the invention. 3 shows a longitudinal sectional View. 4 shows the back of the casing.
Figs. 5 struction. V s
The casingof the lamp consists of the body. portion and the cover 11. The body portion 10 which is preferably stamped out of an integral piece of sheet metal, com prises an oblongportion l2 and a circular portion 13, the two portions being connected by a constricted narrow portion 14. The circular portion 13 is provided with slots 15 and 16 on its periphery, as shown in Fig. 2. The back face of the body portion 10 is provided with two sockets 17 and 18 for the reception of the ends of the holding ring 19. The sockets 17 and 18 are preferably integral with the body of the casing and stamped out from the back of the casing.
The cover 11 is shaped in such a manner as to conform to the shape of the body 10 of the casing. The cover 11 is also provided with an oblong portion 20 and a circular portion 22. The circular portion of the cover is provided with a circular opening 23 which may be of any size desired and which is in the preferred embodiment of the invention, of a diameter that approximates the diameter of the circular portion 21. V
The body of the casing 10 is provided with a notch 24 which cooperates with a lug 25 on the cover 11 for the purpose of assembling the two parts and holding the same in closed position as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. 'The lower edge of the cover is pro vided with a teat 26 which cooperates wlth an aperture 27 in the lower edge of the The In the constricted portion and 6 show det-ailsof the conbody of the casing. The assembly of theltwo ing. the lug-25 into the notch 24and'then depressing thecove'r over thebody ofthe casing until 26 enters the aperture 27., The lower edge of-the cover llis also'provided with twoprojections 28 and 29 which faoi litate the removal of the cover from the body of the casing. r 1
14 of the body of the casing is device which is. designed to serve asa socket for receiving the elec-I tric signaling bulb. This socket 30 is shown in detail 111 Fig. (3- of the: drawings It is v v 1, 88,119 PATENT o EicE.
parts of the casing is accomplished by insertformed to. the shape shown, out of a piece. of
sheet metal. It is providedwith two plates 31 and 32 which aredisposcd in substantially parallel planes andare connected together by means of the back plate The plate32 is provided with downwardly extending wings 34 and 35 which are shaped to conform with the inner sides of the constricted por.-.' tion 14 of the body of the casing. The socket 30 is held in position by the frictional engagement of the wings 34, and against th walls of the casing. The plates 31 and 32 are provided witl iregistering apertures-39 and which aredesigned to receive the threaded lampbase 36ofthe'lamp 37. The center contact38 of the lamp projects beyond the aperture 40 into the oblong portion of the casing.
lVithin the oblong portion of the casing is placed a sn iall'electric cell 41 which is provided with two contact terminals 42 and The contact terminal. 42 is longer than the contact terminal 43 and extends to a 1 point in contact with the center contact 38 and is always in contact therewith. The contact terminal 43 is normally out of con tact with the casing of the lamp. The resilient switch contact strip 44 is riveted to the inner face of the circular portion of the body of the casing 10 by means of the rivet 45. A knob 46 is attached to the strip 44 and projects outwardly of the casing through the aperture 47 in the casing. The contact strip 44' passes under the plates 31 and 32 through notches 48 and 49 provided therefor, and has a bent port-ion 50 which projects into proximity with the terminal strip 43. It will be seen that by depressing the knob 46 the resilient contact strip 44 is depressed in such a manner that its free end 50 comes in contact with theterminal strip bulb 'is completed and the electric bulb is il- I luminated. 'When the pressure on the knob 46 is released, the circuit is broken. 'A transparent device 50 shaped inthe manner shown in Fig. and made preferably-of celluloid or other similar material,.is placed in the circular portio-nof the casing. The
I Y central portion 51 of the faceof the element 50 is painted red for signaling purposes.
In order to prevent accidental closing of -thehcircuit,. a locking device is provided 'WlllQll under normal conditions and -when I the signal lamp is not intended for use, will prevent the accidental closing or the -cn'-,
cuit. -The locking device comprises a strip 52 which is pivotally riveted to the back of the casing at 53. Its free end 55 is de signed to be inserted into, thespace between theknob 46 and the back ofthe casing 10.
The free end 55v is provided with a notch :54
avhich engages the shaft of the knob and the other end of the strip 53 which projects beyond the casing to facilitate the operation thereof, is serrated. v I
i'The signal lamp is held on the backt of the operators hand bymounting the ring :19 on one of the fingers of the operators hand. Normally with the operators hand on the driverswheel, the hand and fingers are spaced from the operating knob 46' and the circuit of the electric bulb is open.
WVhen, however, the operator. extends his arm for signalling purposes, his hand is straightened and thereby comes in contact with the operating knob 46 and depresses it, whereby the contact strip 44 is depressed into contact with the'termi-nal'strip 43 and the signaling device is automatically illumi nated. The ring 19 serves as a iulcrum or as a reaction member for the linger so as to facilitate the application of pressure to a the operative knob. It is obvious that in place of the ring 1 9 which is designed to he slipped over the operators finger, a handle large enough to slip over the operators palm may be used without altering the operation of the lamp.
