This invention relates to typewriting machines of 'the continuous billing or fan`fold type, yone Vforni of which is shown inthe patent to Wernery & Smith, No. 1,132,055, dated March 16, 1915 in which a web or pack which maybe composed of separate plies `or of plies attached at their edges, is fed with interleaved carbon-sheets around the platen, and provision is made for shifting the carbens from a section of the superposed plies in which typing has been completed to the "next unused section ou which typing is to be effected. Usually each ply of a web or pack carries a succession 'of printed forms, tand the forms on4 the superposed plies are in register.
For 'certain classes of work to be done in a fan-fold or continuous billing machine, it is .a desideratuni to `be able to type upon any one of a plurality of webs or packs, to be able to change quickly from one pack te another, and to be azble'to' type .upon more Vthan one of said packs at the same time.
Anobject ofthe invention is to provide a fan-fold lor continuous billing Jn'iachine in which a change may be effected rapidly from typing on one web orpack 'to typing on another, from typing on one pack to typing on more than ,one pack, and from typing on more than one pack to typing on any selected ack. f p 1n the vembodiment of the invention herein disclosed, provision is made lof two carboncarriers which may be arranged one behind the other, and which preferably may be mounted on the saine track. To avoid interference between the packs extending from the carbon-'carriers to the platen, the carbonblades of the two carbon-carriers may be supported at different heights. Preferably the pack from the rear carbon-carrierpasses to the paper-table at the rear of the platen above the forward' carbon-carrier, and at such a height thereabove as not to interfere with the rearwardly-folded forward end of the lower 'pack when the forward carboncarrier is in its vextreme forward position.
A feature of the invention consists in the provision ofmeans to detain the forward carbon-carrier in its eXtreme forward position when vthe rearward carbon-carrier is carbon-carrier Vin its eXtreme rearward position while the forward carbon-carrier is in use. W'hen, therefore, the forward carboncarrier is 'to be used alone, the rearward carbon-carrieris moved rearwardly and placed under the control of said detaining means, which perferab'ly acts automatically' when the rearward -carbo'n4carrier reaches its rearmost position. When the rearward Vcarbon'- carrier is to be used the forward carboncarrier is moved to its eXtreme forward position and there detained by an automatically acting detaining'devioe. It should be understood thatwhen either of the carbon-carriers is to be used the extent of the rearward movement thereof may be determined by 4 suitable means such as an adjustable stop.
Another vfeature .of the invention consists in the provision of means for connecting the carbon-carriers so that they may bevusedV as a single carbon-carrier. VPreferably such connecting means is sov 'constructed as to` become elective automatically when the carbon-carriers are ybrought together.
To operatethe carbon-carriers use may be made of a single ycerben-carrier handle,
kwhich may readily beY detached from either of vsaid carbon-carriers and attached to the other; the single handle under certain conditions enabling only the active one 'of Vthe, carbon-carriers to be actuated.

The cross-bar 22 has secured thereto, by suitable brackets, a rearward extension 31 of the carriage comprising front and rear cross-members' 32 and forwardly and rearwardly extending rods 33 carrying fiat rails 34 to co-operate with grooved rolls 35 pivoted on a base 36 of a carbon-carrier 37.
As herein illustrated, provision may be made of two such carbon-carriers 37, one behind the other. Preferably the forward carbon-carrier is lower thany the rearward carbon-carrier and comprises at each end thereof steppedblocks 38 carrying carbon blades or holders 39, to which are attached the rear ends of carbon-sheets or carbens 49 interleaved between continuous webs or plies 4l, which `may extend upwardly from a suitable source of supply, around a transverse guide 42 at the' rear end of said carriage-extension 3l, forwardly past the carbon-blades 39 and between the platenV and the rear paper-table`24 and paper-apron 25 to the print- Preferably the webs 41 are provided with successive forms Vsuperposed in register, and successive sets of superposed forms may be typed and severed by a knife 43 in the usual manner. o
The rearward carbon-carrier may be proi vided with stepped blocks 44 of such height Lesaoo tween plies 46 of a second set supported at the rear of the carriage-extension by means of a transverse guide or rod 47. The plies 41 and 46 may be guided laterally by edgegages 48 and 49, respectively.
In case it is desired to use only the forward carbon-carrier, as illustrated in Figure 1, the webs and interleaved 'carbonsheets in the rearward carbon-carrier 37 are folded rearwardly, and the rearward carboncarrier is movedv rearwardly and detained in its rearinost position by suitable means such as a spring-detent 48 on the base thereof engaging the rear transverse rod 32 and yieldably detaining the carbon-carrier in rearinost position., rlhe forward carbon-carrier may be limited in its rearward movement by i'neans of a detachable stop 49 placed en one or both of the rails 34 and cured thereto by a set-screw 50. Then the rearward carbon-carrier is to be used, the forward carbon-carrier may be detained by a detent 4 a in its Figure 3 position and the stop 49 may be shifted to its Figure 3 position.
inasmuch as ordinarily only oneof the carbon-carriers is to be used at one time, provision may be made for using one carboncarrier handle 51 for both carbon-carriers, To this end the carbon-carrierhandle 5l may have a laterally-extending flange 52 provided with a slot 53 to receive the shank l a headed stud 54, fixed in the base 36 of each carbon-carrier', and the shank of a second stud 55. It will` be seen `that the shank of the stud 55 is of such diameter that, when the handle 51 is forced rearwardly, the split end of the 'flange 52 will be spread andv then the sides thereof .will snap backy substantially'toA normal position with .the shank of the stud 55 fitting in the cutouts 56. 4With this Varrangement it will be evident that the carbon-carrier handle may be easily de-v tached from one carbon-carrier and attached tothe other when desired.

1l.y In a web-typing machine, the combination of a platen, means for presenting separate work-packs to the platen, including a carriage, a carriage-extension, carbon-carriers on said extension one behind the other, each carbon-carrier with its carbon-sheets and pack forming a separate unit, means for rendering the units either jointly' or individually active, at will, including releasable means 'or connecting said carriers, and separate introductory guides for the two webs, to clear one web from the other, ysuiicient clearance being provided vertically between the two carriers to alord a clearance for the idly-folded-back end of the lower web.

In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination oit' a platen, a carriage, means for presenting separate workpacks to the platen, including a carriage-extension, safd extension comprising rails, a plurality of carbon-carriers arranged behind each ether on said rails, each carbon-carrier with its carbon-sheets and pack i'ormingv a separate unit, and each carbon-carrier comprising a set of carbon-carrying blades, the blades of each set being in step-like relation, the sets 'in the various units being also in step-like relation with reference to each other, a vsingle linger-piece interchangeable with either one of the carbon-carriers, and separate introductory guides for the two webs, to clear one web from the other, suliicient clearance being provided vertically be-Y tween the two carriers to afford a clearance for the idly-folded-back end of the lower web.
