AWNING CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed October 11, 1928.
This invention relates to awning construction In awnings such as those provided with pivotally mounted arms it has been found that when the awning is relatively flat and does not extend down at a considerable slant, that diiiiculty is experienced in opening the awning as gravity does not materially aid in this operation.
Objects of this invention areto provide a novel form of awning construction 'in which a pair of pivotally mounted, foldable arms are employedfor carrying and supporting the front bar of the awning, and in which means are provided for aiding in the opening of the awning, such arms being carried in any suitable manner.
in embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a sectional view through the device showing the arms extended;
Figure 2 is a similar View showing the arms folded;
Figure 3 is a View taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that a channel or recessed box 1 is provided which may be set in a wall or secured thereto in any suitable manner. This .box is provided with a pair of brackets '2 rigidly attached thereto. Each bracket carries a pivotally mounted arm 3 which in turn carries an arm 4:. These arms are joined by means of the enlarged portions 5 and 6 in a pivotalmanner and it is to be noted that the member 5 is provided with a projecting portion which contacts with the member 6 and thus limits the opening of the arms. Obviously adjustable means may be provided, if desired.
The forward ends of the arms 4 are pivotally joined to brackets 7 rigidly attached to the front bar 8. Further it is to be noted that springs 9 are interposed between the arms 4: and the bar 8 and that these springs aid in the opening motion of the arm.
The awning is attached to the front bar 8 Serial No. 140,879.
in any suitable manner and the awning is indicated by the reference character 10 in Figure 3. It is attached at its inner end. to a roll or drum 11 upon which it is adapted to be wound, such drum being operated in any of the usual ways.
It is to; be noted particularly from reference to Figure 3 that the front bar 8 is in reality a front cover for the box, and when the awning is retracted or wound upon the roll 6 the front bar closes the box and provides a finished appearance and also a protected housing for the end and arms.
It is to be noted particularly that when the awning is let out by unwinding the roll 11, the springs 9 aid in this outward opening motion as they tend to rock the levers or arms into the position shown in Figure 1. Further it is to be noted that when the awning is rewound the springs keep it under tension and insure an even winding thereof.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.
I claim:
An awning arm construction comprisin an inner and an outer arm having enlarged heads pivotally joined, said heads contacting when the arm is extended and preventing said arms from becoming aligned or parallel,
an outer member pivoted to the outer end of said outer arm and adapted for connection to a front bar, a rear member pivoted to the rear end of the rear arm and adapted for connec' tion to a support, and a spring having one end attached to said outer arm and having its other end adapted for attachment to said front bar.
\ In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin.
