CLAMP FOR BROOMS.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,877, dated March 24, 1857.

To 64% whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAHUEL MASON, of Indian Springs, in the county of Vashington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Brooms Made of Broom- Corn or other Similar Materials; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which represents in perspective the clasp for holding the material, with the hinged portion of the clasp raised up, to show its connect-ion with the handle.

The nature of my invention relates to the manner of drawing down and securing the hinged portion of a permanent broom-clasp, so as to firmly hold the material of which the broom is made, and so as to enable any one to re-fill the clasp with new material, when the old becomes worn out.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the draw- It represents the boX part of a metallic clasp to which is hinged a piece B, which when shut down incloses the box clasp, ex cept on one side. Both the box, and hinged portions of the clasp are provided with teeth a, a, &c., which when brought together pass through the material of which the broom is made, and hold it firmly to or in the clasp. The hinged portion of the clasp is provided with hasps b, b, which take over projecting staples in the side of the clasp to hold it in place.

On the rear of the boX portion of the clasp is secured a socket C, through which the handle D, of the broom passesthe end of said handle entering within the clasp, and may pass under or through a supporting piece E, within the clasp, to give it further support. To the end of the handle F, within the clasp, is secured one end of a cord, thong, or wire cthe other end thereof being secured to a pin or bolt cl, on the outside of the hinged portion B of the clasp.

To make the broom the butt ends of the broom-corn or other material, are slipped under the plate G (the lid B, having been first raised up as seen in the drawing) and laid in regular coursestheir points projecting out of the clasp, until the clasp is sufficiently filled. The handle D, is then turned, so as to wind up on it the cord, thong, or wire 0, this draws the hinged portion B, down, driving its teeth a,'through the material, until it comes to its seat. The hasps b b, are now closed over their catches, and by driving a tack. or nail through the socket G, into the handle D, the broom is finished. When the broom is worn out, draw the nail out of the socket, slip out the bolt (Z, from the loop of the cord, thong, or wire undo the hasps, and the old material can be removed, and new introduced, and again secured as above described.

The attachment of the hinged portion B, to the handle, not only facilitates the 010s ing of said piece upon the broom material, but tends to hold it there at its center, where, unless made so heavy as to be unwieldy, it is liable to spring away from the resistance of the material underneath it.

I thus make a very durable and economical broom clasp, in which any one may make their brooms, or renew them at pleasure. The supporting piece E, being secured to one side plate, and the handle passing through it, being connected to the other plate (B), near their centers-are drawn and held together thereby.

Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

So uniting the hinged portion of the case to the handle by means of a thong, cord, or wire, as that the leverage of the handle may be used for closing saidhinged portion thus firmly closing the case on the material to hold it rigidly in the case as set forth, and to strengthen the middle portions of the clasp, as described.
