i serum GENERATOR. Y
.` Appucaaon mea october so, 1924. serial 1ro. nasse.
This invention relates to .steam-v generators,
and more particularly to steam generators of the flash type, the primary object ofthe invention being to provide means .for con- 5 trolling the condition of the steam at all times to insurea dry steam entering the cylinders of ari-engine receiving steam from the generator. Another important object ofthe invention 4 is to provide means for controlling the quan- Atity of water entering the generator coil to 'prevent unnecessary cooling ofthe coils to decrease the etliciency of the generator.
A stillurther object of the invention is the provision of means supported between `sections of the coils to break up the water passingtherethrough to. insure against 'vac-A uum blocks in the coils.
With the' foregoing and r other :objectslin View which will appear as fthe -description proceeds, the invention resides in the'combination and arrangement of parts and, in the details of construction4 hereinafterdescribed land claimed, it being understood that lchanges in the precise embodiment of fthe invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, 'without departing VReferringto the drawing:
.30, `Figure 1 is a'diagrammaticview disclosing the coils and controlling means of a generator constructed in accordance with the invention. Figure 2 '1s a transverse sectional view through the coils.
through the coils.
- F1gure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the atomizer d'sposed between the coils for 5 breaking up the water passing therethrough. Referring to thedrawing in'detaihtheret erence character 5 Vdesi'gr'nates the water tank that `supplies y'thenecssary water tothe generator, and as shown, the watertankf, isirflr v p the tubes of the coil 29 so that heat 'passlng communication,vv-ith fthepum 6 lthrough y the pipe'7.: "I-liepmp 6 of t efusllconf.A struction and; has connection with an operat- .ing'rod v8, which 'in turn, is connected with a suitable operating --mechanismnot shown.
nects the valve housing 1'3 with tank so dry steam.
that when the water in the system is cool, and the coils of the system are filled, water may be returned from the' valve housing to tem 'untilthe coils of the system Vare Sulli- -ciently hot.
The upper end of the pipe 11 extends laterally as at 12 from where it extends down-v wardly .and connects with the vertical pipe 13', b means of the union 14', there being provi ed a check= valve 15 in the pipe12 to prevent water, from returning through the pipe 12" to the pump. A
.This pipe, 13 extends downwardly as clearly shown by Figure l of the drawing and communicates with the feed water lcoil 16 of the system, which is spirally formed.
' scribed.
The heads 18 and 20 have lateral extensions 21 to which the rods 22 are connected lso that the heads will move with the rods,`
the lower ends of vthe rods '22 extending through the lateral extensions 23 of the valve so that movement of thetube 19 wi1l becompensated for.
Carried by the headlS is a rod 25 which;
has a ball vvalve 26 secured to its lower end,
g n v whichl ball valve is adapted to seat at 27 90 FigureX` is a 'verticalwsectional v1ewto cut oi the passage of liquid through the tube 12 and is adapted to seat at'28 to allow inner coil, the tubes 'of the coil# 30 being disposed directly above thespaces between" upwardly between the tubes of the coils will j,
contact with all ofh the tubesl of the coils to V'eiiiciently heat the water contained therein. v
Goose neckslare formed at the endsof certain coils, which goose necks are connected by the casing 32 of anv atomizer, :to be `hereinafter more fully described, so that water assing from one coil to the other'will Y. be bro en up into-tine particles to insurea i los" The atomizer is formed with a contracted portion 33 which mer es into an enlarged portion 34 in which t e nozzle 35 is positioned, the nozzle 35 being inverted coneshaped and formed with a plurality of openings 36 through which the water mustV pass on its. passage through the bottom of the atomizer.
It might be stated that it has been'found in practice that water in coils of a generating system of the type `as shownv and described, will fill the upper portions of the coil and will generate steam, at a certain point in the tubes at which point the atomizer as described is positioned, so that the water will be broken into a fine spray, to the'end that a dy steam will be provided at all times.
It is to be understood that a suitable flame or heat producing medium will be disposed adjacent to the coils to heat the tubes of the coils for generating steam.
At the lower end of the coils is a pipev 37 which forms a continuation of the coil coil 16 and is heated, the heated water pass-v ing to the tube 19 'which expands, forcing the ball valve to the seat 27 causing water to ass through the pipe 12, coil 16, pipe 17 an into the coils 29 and 30, where it is converted into steam and. carriedofl' through pipe 37 to the cylinders of the engine operated thereby.
Should the supply of water ,become eX- cessive and tend to cool the water 1n the pipes, it is obvious thatthe water which is not converted into steam and which passes through tube 19, will act to cool the tube. causing the valve member 26 to move fromits seat 27 to the end that thewater forced into the system by the pump 6 will pass through pipe 11 and be returned to the tank 5 through the pipe 14.
When the supply of water in the tubes is decreased to a certain degree, the heat will cause the tube 19 `to again expand andseat the valve 26 to the endthat the water will pass through the pipe 12 and into the feed water coil .and generator coils .as described. y
y It might be further stated 'that due to the yerator coils and a feed water c'oil, a1
'the heat of the water construction of the atomizer, the atomizer will automatically control the booster noz- 'zle of the atomizer and 'compensate'for water enters the inner coil of the system insuring.
a dry steam.

A steam generator including generator coils and a feed water coil, a source of water supply, a pipe establishing communication between the source of water supply and feed water coil, a termo-responsive tube establishing communication -between the feed water coil "and the generator coils whereby Water may flow from thefeed water coil-to the generator coils, and a valve operated by the thermo-responsive tube for controlling the passage of water from the source of water supply to the feed water coil.
2. A steam generator including generator coils and a feed water coil,` a feed water tank, a feed pipe through which water passes from the tank to the feed water coil, a return pipe connected with the feed pipe andvtank, a valve in the return pipe to control the passage of water to the feed water coil or to the tank?, an expansion tube establishing communication between the feed wawhich heated water passes to the generator coils, land a rod connected with the expansion tube to move therewith and operate the Valve. l
