. RECEPTACLE FOR USE 'IBY SMOKERS FOR TOBACCO ASH tam-HE LIKE. 1
Application filed January 7, 1927, Serial No. 159,664, and in Great Britain- January 25, 192d,
This invention relates to a novel and convenient construction of pocket matclnbox, cigarette lighter, or cigarette case, combined with a receptacle :for tobacco ash. Pa'rtictu,
larly the invention relates to pocket ashtrays comb ned with match-boxes or conta ners of the, kind comprising a cas ng to which the matchbox or container is hinged and into;
which it can folded. v
Accordlng to; the present invent on a match-box consisting of a box-like receptacle for matches having alid, slide, .or closingfiap, or a c1garette l ghte y or a cigarette, case,
and having an ash discharge opening con trolled by a lid or closure that is independent tected when the said lid or closing member is closed in addition to theprote'c tion ob.
tained byfolding the box down into the casing to which it is hinged; fl lie'ash discharge opening in the'casing ispreferably' at" the opposite end of the, casingto that at which the match-box or lighter is hinged and the 3; said discharge opening is closed by a. hinged lid, or slide, formed it may be as a receptacle for tobacco ash. Conveniently the. upper wall of the ash receptacle, when the said lid or slide is formed as an ash receptacle, has formed in ita depression that constitutes a rest for a cigarette or cigar. In cases where a simple flap or slide is provided to close the ash discharge opening, a groove. to form a cigarette or cigar rest may be formed in a wall of the match-box, lighter, or cigarette case.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings show in side elevation, end elevation, and plan, respectively, a combined match-box and ash receptacle according tov the invention. 3
Figs. 4 and 5 are similar views to Figs. 1 and 3 respectively but showing the matchbox in its open position.
Fig. 6 is a cross-section, taken'on line 6 6 in Fig. 5. V
1 indicates a fiat box or case of substantially rectangular shape which is open at the top and to an end wall of which there of the match-box, lighter or cigarette case unitf, By providing the ,match box with a lid, slide, or closing flap the matches are pro-' is hingedfat 2 a match 'container in the form of a rectangular boxfurnished with a lidQll The lid'4 is connected to the match box 3 by a hinge ,5 which, inknown manner, embodies aspring that constantly'tends'to. i move thelid nto the open position indicated in liigL' 4. The hinge 10 also embodies a spring constantly tending to maintain the pocket 11 in the position shown in Figs. 1,- 2 and 3, in line with the box or case 1, in which position, moreover, it can be retained by a flap 13 hinged to the box or case 11'" 1 and formed with a hole adapted to engage a pin 14 projecting from the pocket 11. In the top wall of the ash pocket 11 and the top edge of the front wallof the box or case 1 a groove 15 is formed in-which a cigarette can rest conveniently.
According to a modification instead of the match-box 3 a cigarette lighter of known character, or a cigarette case, can be hinged to the box or case 1 in like manner to the said match-box? i The article constructed as described is convenient in that the ash can be retained in the pocket 11 until it is convenient to discharge the same but if a simple hinged flap, slide, or the like is provided in place of the pocket it is necessary to empty the ash as by blowing it through the ash discharge openings 12 before folding the match-box down into the easing. In such construction a slight groove, like the groove 15, would preferably be made inthe lid 4: of the match-box, or cigarette case, or in the equivalent wall of the lighter, asthe case may be. p I
Whilst in the construction illustrated the ash discharge opening is at one end of the box or case, it will be appreciated that the invention is not restricted to the opening being in such position; it could be at, either side or at the bottom of the casing. In some constructions the dimensions of the box or case could besuch as to provide a space all round the match-box, lighter, or cigarette case when closed, but such a construction has the disadvantage of increasing the overall size of the article. Furthermore, in some cases the casing might be made in one piece with the pocket 11, and the pocket could then be emptied by the whole underside being lowered on a hinge immediately beneath the hinge 2, Fig. 2, or at the hinge 2, or the under part of the pocket only might drop at the hinge 10, hig. 1. In both these cases a suit able catch or equivalent would be provided whereby the hinged under part could be held to the casing when closed.
\ If desired one or more articles ofutility might be combined withan ashtray such as described. 7 For instance amirror might be provided which could conveniently be'mounte ed on the outer or inner side of the matchbox, li hter or cigarette case, or on the bottom or underside of the casing. Similarly the outerside of the lid or the underside of the casing or ashtray might be formed as, or
provided with means reconstitute, a holder underside. In some cases, if so desired, the
ashtray or ash receiving casing can be fitted with a. readily removable lining.
What we claim is l. A receptacle for use by smokers, comprising an open-topped container for ash provided with a discharge opening, a. match box provided with a lid andhinged' to the ash container, said match box being foldable into the ash container, and a storage pocket for the ash hinged to the ash container'and provided with an opening which communicates with the said-discharge opening.
2. A receptacle as set forth in claim 1, the match box being hinged to one side of the ash container, and the said pocket being hinged to the opposite side of the ash container.
3. A receptacle as set fotrh in claim. 1, the storage pocket being provided with a disengageab-l-e spring catch which holds it in the same plane as the ash containerto permit the ash to be emptied from the container into the p c-k tv i 4. A receptacle as set forth in claim 1, the
said pocket being provided with a depression in its top side for holding a cigarette.
In testimony whereof we affix oursigna tures.
