BRUSH AND HANDLE FOR VACUUM CLEANERS.
Application filed September '23, 1922. Serial No. 590 113.
This invention relates to rotary brushes and handle bails for use uponvacuum cleaners or similar devices arranged to be moved to and fro upon the floor by means of a pivoted handle, a rotary brush being mounted in the cleaner for removing surface lit tor; and the sets of the improvement are, toprovide an eiiicient means for rotating the brushfrom a tractionwheel of the cleaner and-to provide simple means for pivoting the handle bail upon the cleaner for holdin'g'the handle "bail in adjusted positions, and for attaching the handle to the handle bail.
The above and other objects may be at tained by constructing the device as illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vacuum cleaner embodying the improvements;
Fig. 2, a section on the line 22, Fig. 1;
Fig. 8, a section through the bearing for the handle bail on the opposite side from that shown in Fig. 2; i
Fig. 4., a perspective view of the segmental plate which receives the clamping screw of the handle bail;
F 5, a perspective view of the spring plat-e which cooperates with the clamping bolt for holding the handle bail in the inoperative position.
*ig. 6, a section through the handle socket and the lower end of the handle;
Fig. 7 a detail perspective view of the segmental plate and spring plate part of the segmental plate being broken away for the purpose of illustration.
Similar numerals of reference indicate cor- A responding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
For the purpose of illustrating the application of the improvements to a portable machine, a vacuum cleaner of any usual type is illustrated, and comprises the fan casing 1, having the usual suction shoe or cleaning nozzle 2 at its forward end and supporting the motor casing 3, the discharge neck 4; being located at the rear end of the casing and communicating with the usual dust collecting bag 5, a handle bail 6 being pivotallyvconnected to opposite sides of the casing and provided with the operating handle 7 for the purpose of manipulating the machine to and fro upon the floor.
Traction wheels 8 are provided on each side in of the ends at the cleaning nozzle so that the same can be tilted upward or downward by lowering or raising the rear end of the machine, a rear casto-r 9 being employed for limiting the downward-movement.
Each extremity of the handlebail is provided with a bearing "opening 10 journaled upon a headed bushing 11, said bushing being mounted upon a stud 12 having the preferably enlarged threaded portion 13 inserted into a suitable threaded borev 14 in the adjacent side of the sweeper casing.
The head 15 of the bushing is grooved as at 16 to receive the cotter pin 17 which is passed through the stud 12 and the outer extremity of said stud is threaded as at 18 to receive the locking nut 19.
It will be seen that a very desirable construction of journal bearing is thus provided as the inner end of the bushing 11 impinges the adjacent side of the casing, the bail be- 7 ing journaled between the casing and the head of the bushing preventing the same from being squeezed or pinched against the side of the casing by a tightening up or the nut 19.
.F or the purpose of holding the handle bail in different adjusted positions a segmental plate20 is located over the stud 12 upon one side of the casing and-connected to the casing as by the screws 21, said plate having an arouate slot 22 which receives the clamping bolt carried by the handle bail, a lock washer 2e and wing nut 25 being provided upon the outer end of the clamping bolt for the purpose of clamping the handle bail to the se mental plate. j
It has been found preferable to form the plate 20 of a hard metal and to place a washer 26 between the head of the clampingbolt and the segmental plate, this washer being formed of copper or other soft metal, in order to tightly clamp the handle bail in any adjusted position. i
A spring plate 27 is mounted over the stud 12 between the plate 20 and the adjacent side of the casing, one of the screws 21 being preferably located through said spring plate.
A tang 2 8 is formed upon said spring plate, havingthe rounded socket 29 and the angular extremity 80, over which the head of the clamping bolt may ride to permit the same to seat itself in the socket 29 which'is so located that the handle bail will be held in the inoperative position socket 31. is provided with a. grooved rib located through a longitudinal bore in the tapered loWer end of the handle 7 and held therein as by the transverse pin 35, the exextendlng through the tremity of said stem aperture 36 in the bottom of the socket and being threaded to receive the Wing nut 37, a lock Washer 38 being interposed between the bottom of the socket an d the Wing nut.
It Will be obvious that a simple and efficient means is thus provided for attaching the handle to the handle hail, the tapered end of the handle being drawn down tightly into the socket as the Wing nut is tightened on the threaded stem.
1. In combination with avacuum cleaner,
a threaded stud upon each side thereof a headed bushlng mounted upon each stud, a handle bail ournaled upon the bushing and a nut upon the stud for tightening the bushing against the side Wall of the cleaner.
2. In combination With a vacuum cleaner a threaded stud upon each side thereof, a headed bushing mounted upon each stud, a cotter pin located through the head of each bushing and through the stud, a handle bail journaled upon the bushing and a nut upon a stud for tightening the bushing against the side Wall of the cleaner.
8. In combination With a vacuum cleaner, a stud fixed to each side thereof and provided With a threaded outer portion, a bushing mounted upon each stud and having a head at its outer end, a handle bail having its end portions journaled upon said bushing and a nut upon the threaded portion of each stud engaging the head of the bushing and clamping the inner end of the bushing against the side otthe cleaner.
