UNITED STATES 1,686,825) PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS VAITIDERLIP, OF ELKHAH'I INDIANA.
HOOD CLAMP FOB. auroaromLa-s.
Original application filed December 11, 1926. Serial N0. 154 055. Divided and this application filed June 24 1927. Serial No. 201,041. i
This invention relates to automobile devices, and especially to hood clamps therefor. The principal object of the invention is to provide a hood clamp which exerts both a downward and a lateral pressure upon the engine hood, the lateral pressure being effected by non-metallic cam means.-
Another object .of the invention is to provide a hood clamp which-exerts both'a downward and a lateral pressure upon the engine hood, the lateral pressure being effected by coacting cam elements, one of .which is ruboer. l I
-()ther.ob ects of the invention are men- 7 tioned. and described herein.
This applicatiomis a division of applicant's application No. 154.055, filed Dec. 11',
The preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawiug wherein, Figured is a side elevation'of anengine hood and illustrating the'invent-ion applied thereto; Fig. ,2 is a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3' illustrates two views of the .one piece hold. down clamp bracket; Fig. 4 is ection taken on line 4.4 of Fig. 1.; and U a front elerationalivicw thereof.
' Suniiar numerajls of"' reference indicate like parts throughout the several views on the drawing. i Referring the numeral 1 represents a fraxne'section of a motor car to which the hood abutment-element may he rigidly attached interiorly of the hood 3 to limit the inward movement of the latter when it is subject to pressure exerted by a hood clamp, as hereinafter described. The numeral-1 indicates a clamp keeper, preferably made of ductile sheet metal, and rigidly secured to the hood exterior by. rivets 5 which may engage the downward extension or body portion 6 of the keeper. A wedge shaped cam element, preferably made of soft rubber and numbered-7, may be secured to the keeper extension 6 adjacent the lower-end thereof, as by integral lugs 8 which engage the opposite sides of said cam. An abutment lug. 9, preferably integral with the bod"-6 of the keeper, andprojecting laterally t refrom, serves toprevent upward displacement I of the cam 7. Preferably, the outer faeeof the carnelement-7 is inclined in respect to-the' hood'wall 3 to efiect lateral inwardpressute uponlthe hood when .the cam engages a stationary-cam, as is hereinafter described,
to the details of the drawing,
The hold-down section or unit of the clamp may comprise the hollow cylindrical sprin" barrel or casing h) which is apert'urcd and constricted at'it lou'ci' (.-ml H to admit the passage of the usual spring rod 11 and within which the usual coil spring 152 is compressed about the rod and seated, respectively. 'on' the rod head 1 and the casing end wall 14. The numeral 15 indicates the usual latch element mounted rigidly on the upper end of the spring casing 10 and which may he provided with the handle 17 and the hook 16 adapted to engage the keeper 4. The lower end of the spring rod ll. may he provided with the hin e eye 18 pivot-ally mounted upon the hinge pin 19 which ha its opposite ends carried in the bracket eiement 1U. the-latter being rigidly secured to the frame element 1, as hereinafter described, by bolts 21. As illustrated, the clamp bracket 20 preferably made from w a single piece of ductile sheet metal and comprises the base portion 2-0, -the hinge prong sections .52, suitably ap'erture'd to carry the hinge pin 15). the lateral wings 23, su tably apertured to' take the-fastener-bolts 21, and the stationary cam section Z4--. vhic h is adapted to be engaged by the rubber'cam 7 and to'coact therewith when the hood-3 is drawn downward by the urge of the spring 12 of the hold-down clamp unit. In a device of this character it is very essential that the means used to prevent rattle of the hood shall exert both a downward pull as well as a lateral thrust inwardly on the hood, and the latter must be sustained and sulhcient' to prevent outward movement of the hood under all driving conditions. In this device the rubber cam 7, or the element 26, ,Wl'll permit the holddo-wn clampto fullydraw the hood downward in the proper manner'and to the maximum extent on account of their resilient and yicldable character, there-' -by effecting the desired inward lateral pres sure onthe hood and also eliminating metal the hood, :1 spring actuated hold-down clamp positioned exteriorly of theihoo'd and adapted to exert downward -:pressure upon the "hood ,i.a nd yieldable, non-metalliccm means carridby the hood operative when the hood is depressed by said clamp {or projecting the.
' abutment.
mentsecure laterallyhgainst said a means including a metalelement and a nonr'netallic, yieldable element, one
-said hold-down clamp, .mcans for exerting lateral pressure upon hood laterally into engagement with said abutment. 2. In an automobile hood .clamp, the combination of a hood, a hood abutment, aspring actuated hold-down clam adapted to exert downward pressure upon t able, resilient, nonmetallic cam means carried by the hood operative when the hood is depressed by said clamp for projectingthe hood laterally into engagement wlth said 3. In an automobile hood clamp, the combination with a hood, jof acomblned-metallic keeperand cam mount rigidl secured to of said cam elements beingcarried by'thc hood,
5. In an automobile hood clamp, the combination of a hood, a spring actuated holddown clamp adapted to exert downward pressure upon the hood, bearing means for said hood, said cam means including a nonmetallie element carr ed-by the hood and a ehood, and yield-' exterior, a yieldable, non-metallic cam-eleand coacting cam stationary. element integral with said clamp bearing means;-
6. In an automobile hood-clamp, the eom- I bination oi s hood, a combined metallic keep; er and cam n' junt rigidly secured to the hood ment'carried by said keeper and cam mount and secured thereto by fastening means which is integral with said keeper and'cam' mount, a
connected with said keeper"and adapted to spring actuated hold-down clamp exert downward pressure upon the hood, and,
statio'na cam means adapted to coactflwith said hoo cam for exerting lateral pressure upon the hood. Y
' 7. In an automobile hood-clamp, the combination with a hood, of a hood abutment, a. spring actuated holddown clam adapted to cxertfdown-wa'rd pressure upon tiiehood, and co-acting cam means for'projeeting the hood laterally against said abutment, said cam means ineludin I a metal element and a nonmetallic, yielda le element, the latter being carried by the hood.
8. In an automobile hood clamp, the c'dmbination with a hood, a hood ihutmcnt, and.
a base-frame element, of a spring-actuated Y )utment, S d C a hold-down claniip adapted to exert downward pressure upon the hood, and eo-acting camm'eans for projecting the against'said abutment, said cam means inhood laterally V eluding a metal element and a non-metallic,
yielduble, element, one otfsaid cam elements being carried by the hood and the other by said base frameelement.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto aiiixed my signature this 22nd day of June, 1927.
