LYMAN w. CLOSE, or TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE TOLEDO PRESSED STEEL 00M rANY, or TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CONSTRUCTION TORCH.
Application filed November 24, 19 26. -Seria1 No. 150,404.
This invention relates to torches of the type usedas signals on construction work,
and objects ofthis invention are to provide a novel and serviceable sheet metal, selfrighting torch, which is simple in construction comprises a construction torch in the' form of a. truncated-sphere having two equal parts, an upper part 1 and a lower part 2. These parts are welded together in a well known manner, thereby forming an annular bead 3 intermediate the top and bottom of the torch. Connected to thefiattop 4 of the p u oer la-rt or section 1 is a s out 5 which der construction, are frequently knocked is connected to the section 1 by a'nut 6. A
wick 7 extends through the spout 5 and may be impregnated with kerosene, which is supplied to the interior of the torch througha filling opening 8 also in the top of the torch.
A plug 9 is screwed into the filling opening 8 and forms a closure therefor. p
Torchesof this character, which serve as signals to vehicles that the road way 131111- over, and in order to make this torch selfrighting, a counter-weight 10 of lead or'other suitable materiah'is placed in the bottom of the lower section 2. The material forming the counter-weight may be poured into the section 2 in a molten state,or it maybe pre-' formed by molding in a suitable form, and thereafter placed in the'section 2. The coun ter-weight 10 covers-the entire bottom ofthe section 2, and the sides conform to the sides of the torch, the weight being of substantial;
thickness to provide an efficient counterweight for the body of the torch. V
In'order securely to hold thecounterweight 10 in place, an internal annular bead 11 projects inwardly over the top: of the counter-weight 10, and closely embraces the upper edge thereof. This bead may be of substantial width, and is preferably formed before the sections 1 and 2 are connected'to- 'gether. This bead may be formed by spinning the section 2, and by pressing a suitable tool agalnst the outer surface, the metal may be readily forced inwardly. As shown, a
reversely curved groove 12 is formed on the outer surface of the section 2, thereby'giving the torch a unique and attractive appearance.
Another method of forming the head 11 is by confining the sides of the section 2 above the counter-weight and pressing the bottom of the section toward its open end. The outer side is confined so that the metal cannot be forced outwardly, and a portion of the inner slde is confined so that the metal can only be forced'inwardly thereby forming the bead 11 above the counter-weightand holding the same securely in position. v p
i It will be seen that I have provided a serviceable construction tor'ch, which will"automatically right itself when knooked over, and which may be constructed from sheet metal at a relatively low cost. This torch, be-
cause of its: sheet metal construction, is considerably lighter than the cast iron torches which have heretofore been used, and is much more practical for the purpose, especially in view of the self-righting feature.
While I have described my improved torch in more .or less detail to comply with the requirements-of the statute, it is neveretheless desired that this detailed description be considered merely as illustrative and'not as limiting, and it is to be understoo'dthat changes and modifications may be made by those skilled in this art without departing from the invention as defined in the following claim. i
What I claim as'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The method of securing a counter-Weight in the bottom of a sheet metal body section having a closed end and an open endwhich consists in confining the outer side of the bodyand a portion of the inner side, and pressing the closed end toward the open end thereby to form a bead over the ,counterweight for securing the latteraga-inst dis placement.
In testi signed my name to this specification.
