'sTENcILED INDICATLNG Menus.
Application filed July 27,
My invention relates to improvements in stenciled indicating means, and the object of the invention is to prevent theblurring of the stenciled outline so as to provide a 6 clearly and sharply delined outline indication, which will be clearly visible when illuminated either by night or day, and yet will be totally obliterated when'not illuminated so that any possibility of misunderstanding 10 the signal is absolutely avoided, and it consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained. v
Fig. l represents a front elevation of any l suitable form of indication casing showing my stenciled means incorporated therein partially broken away to exhibit the construction thereof.
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are perspective details ofv the sheets forming my indicating` means separated apart.v
Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the assembled sheets showing a light source and the generalk direction of the rays passing therefrom.
In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each iigure.
l indicates an indicator casing provided with the usual indicator openings 2, 3 and 4.
5, 6 and 7 ,are sheets of celluloid or other suitable material which when assembled are formed to fit behind the orifices 2, 3 and 4 as indicated in Figure 1.
The sheet 5 is semi-opaque and orange in colour. The sheet 6 is provided with .sten- `oiled Openings 6X, 7 X and 8X and is black andis superimposed upon the sheet 5 so that the Orange Celluloid appears through the Openings 6", 7"`and 8X. vThe sheet 7 is purple in colour andsemi-opaque and is superimposed over the sheet 6 so as to extend over the openings 6", 7x and 8X. When soarranged the sheets are placed behind the openings 2,
3 and 4 and are held by the casing in such position. The semi-opaque Celluloid sheet 5 being placed underneath-or inside ofthe sheet 6 permits the stenciled design of` arrow or hand to show distinctly whether or notl the Celluloid is warped.
By placing the purple sheet of Celluloid over the stenciled sheet the outline of the indication, whether hand or arrow when not illuminated is' rendered indistinc or pracs 1927. Serial No. 208,847.
tically obliterated, and yet will permit of I the design to show distinctly whenv lit up either -1n the day time or `at night. The
purple' celluloid also aids in det-racting theA In my Construction as` before stated thev colour sheet is placed on the inside of the stenciled sheet 6 and therefore if there isany tendency for the stenciled sheet to warp at the edge of the stenciled opening it will not affect the clearness and sharpness of the voutline of the signal indication.
` Further by placing the purple sheet 7 over thel sheet 6 not only are the stenciled edges of the sheet 6 held firmly in place, but the purple of the sheet 7 serves to deepen the black background effect of the sheet 6 when the indicator is illuminated, and when it is not illuminated serves to absolutely'hide the outline of the indication by toning the Colour of the sheet 5 into the black background formed by the sheet 6. i
By placing the purple sheet over theorange sheet and theV black stenciled sheet,
the blackness of the background is deepened Y in tone andthe light rays passing through the orange sheet are modified to produce the colour which has been found in practice to .most readily strike the eye andtherefore giving the sign a maximum visibility. f
From this description it will be'Seen that I have devised av very simple device' which willrprovide a clear, vivid sharply definedV outline to the indicating signal, which will f always be clearly visible when illuminated,
and whichk when not illuminated will be rendered invisible to the driver of any other car in its proximity. v p l What I Claim as Vmy invention is 1. A stenciled indicating means comprising a composite sheet consisting ofV an inner sheet of suitably coloured semi-opaquematerial, an intermediate stenciled sheet ofl a contrasting dark shade, and an outer sheet of a' colour tending to tone or merge-the ipto that of the intermediate @y ijs-,Ckgfd air-:ea v e ycolour of the inner sheet when unillurninated Y los ing an inner semi-opaque sheet orange in colour, an intermediate black stenciled sheet,
A and an outer transparent purple sheet'superimposed one upon the other. p i d to be illuminated 3. An indicator adapt and comprising an inner' transparent suitably Vcolored sheet, lmeans permitting light rays to pass through a portion of the sheet and for obstructing the'light rays through the remainder of the sheet to form an opaque background and a sheet overlying the aforesaid sheet and of a Color tending to merge 0r tone the color of the transparent portion v intothe opaque baclground.`
